In much the same way that Elphaba soars through the sky while singing “Defying Gravity,” “Wicked” has taken off in the Oscar Best Picture race. According to Gold Derby’s combined odds, the musical sensation ranks in the top five behind “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” and “Emilia Pérez,” with nowhere to go but up after receiving four Golden Globe nominations. Should “Wicked” prevail on Oscar night, it would join a short list of winners that feature two female main characters, which has happened less frequently than you’d think.
Adapted from Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Tony-winning Broadway smash, “Wicked” centers on the friendship between green-skinned misfit Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and popular girl Glinda (Ariana Grande), who later become the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch, respectively. Funnily enough, the last Best Picture winner centered on two women was another musical adaptation, 2002’s “Chicago.”

Accused has wrapped season 2, but how does each episode rank?
Accused returned to Fox this fall for another set of episodes with a unique formula. Each episode of the anthology features a different cast and story with a person on trial for a crime. As the episode goes on, flashbacks show what happened, and inevitably, the crime itself is never what it originally seemed.
Season 1 was a good success with 15 episodes, while this year was only 8. That was shorter yet still had a great bevy of guest stars, making it notable. Some can argue Season 2 wasn’t as strong as the first year, and while there were great performances, not all the stories worked as well. Here’s how each episode of Accused Season 2 ranks to show which belonged in the top tier for the show.
Caution: This article contains minor Spoilers for Accused Season 2

A few months ago, veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr, who got his acting start in Broadway productions back in 1950s (including Take a Giant Step and a 1959 production of A Raisin in the Sun where he shared the stage with Sidney Poitier), passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.
An Officer and a Gentleman:
Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in this, and became the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award in that category in the process. Next to R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket,...

Shirley MacLaine is making a ghastly racket. It sounds like a combination of retching and the “aack” noise that the protagonist of that old “Cathy” comic strip used to make whenever she was nauseated, horrified, infuriated or you name it. We’re discussing an encounter that MacLaine had with Donald Trump in the ’80s, when she went to look at an apartment in one of his buildings. “In his head, I could see he was undressing himself and me, and I got out of there very fast,” MacLaine writes in her new book, “The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories From This Marvelous Lifetime.”
MacLaine is even more animated when I ask her what she made of the real estate developer turned Maga leader. “Did you hear me shriek?” she asks. “I think that says it all.” She pauses for dramatic effect before delivering a final, emphatic: “Yuck!”
Even at 90, MacLaine,...

The French Film Academy will honor legendary political filmmaker Costa-Gavras with its lifetime achievement award at the upcoming 2025 César Awards.
The 91-year-old auteur, born in Greece before fleeing to exile in Paris, is best known for his politically-charged cinema, including Oscar winners Z (1969) — a thinly fictionalized account of the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963 that led to the country’s long military dictatorship — and English-language feature Missing (1982), about the disappearance of an American journalist in the aftermath of the United States-backed Chilean coup of 1973.
Z was the first film to be nominated both for best picture and best international feature at the Academy Awards, winning the latter, as well as the Oscar for best film editing for Françoise Bonnot. Missing, starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek, won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and was nominated for four Oscars, winning for best adapted screenplay.

We finally have a complete cast list for Accused season 2, so here’s a look at who’s starring in the second season of the Fox hit!
Based on a British show, Accused premiered in 2023 on Fox and quickly became a success. The anthology series opens with a person on trial and flashbacks showing how they got to this point. The storylines are unique, with the crime often not what viewers expected and not always having a happy ending.

For producer Barry Navidi, Johnny Depp’s directorial comeback “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness” marks a full-circle moment in an unconventional career.
Navidi’s first time working with Depp nearly 30 years ago on the 1995 project “Divine Rapture” ended in disappointment when the production was shelved. But on Tuesday, the two will celebrate a high with the world premiere of “Modi” at San Sebastian Film Festival.
Set in war-torn Paris in 1916, “Modi” follows 72 turbulent hours in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani (Riccardo Scamarcio). Fleeing the police and contemplating leaving the city, Modi is convinced to stay by his fellow artists. After a night of hallucinations, he encounters American collector Maurice Gangnat (Pacino), who could change his life forever.
Born in pre-revolution Iran, Navidi grew up watching Hollywood and Indian films. One that made an impression was “The Godfather,” starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. “Call it fate,...

The 1975 TV series "Wonder Woman" is deeply beloved by dutiful Gen-Xers who watched it as children. The show's combination of silly action, funky music, and campy humor hit a sweet spot, presenting the title heroine as bold, strong, and capable, but also upbeat, happy, and capable of whimsy. Also, because lead actress Lynda Carter is so dazzling, many Gen-Xers may confess to having a crush on Wonder Woman at some point. The series was a hit, lasting 59 episodes over three seasons. Along with 1952's "The Adventures of Superman," 1966's "Batman," and 1978's "The Incredible Hulk," "Wonder Woman" was, for many decades, one of the most celebrated superhero TV shows ever made.
"Wonder Woman" began its life as a 1974 pilot starring Cathy Lee Crosby, as a reimagined version of the character. That pilot didn't fly, but ABC was eager to do something successful with the character and launched a second pilot...

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.
Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.
The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

On her fifth Best Actress nomination, Shirley MacLaine finally took home the coveted prize for “Terms of Endearment,” which scored five wins total, including Best Picture. Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we cover the 55th Academy Awards in 1983, honoring the films of 1982.
There was no suspense as to what would win heading into the ceremony. “Gandhi” dominated from top to bottom, winning eight awards from its leading 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Attenborough and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley. The biopic did not have a Best Actress contender, but even if it did, there was no beating Meryl Streep, who prevailed for “Sophie’s Choice.” She was such a lock that even fellow nominee Debra Winger‘s parents were rooting for Streep.

One of the most famous Hollywood legends involves Richard Gere becoming a superstar by taking two roles John Travolta notoriously passed on. One was American Gigolo; the other was An Officer and a Gentleman. The latter film made $130 million at the domestic box office (in 1982 dollars) and propelled Gere to superstardom. And now, Deadline is reporting that Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller is set to star in a remake of the film for Paramount Pictures.
While many may roll their eyes and dismiss An Officer and a Gentleman as schmaltz, they really shouldn’t. It’s a movie I actually hadn’t seen until a few years ago, as I assumed it would be a soapy melodrama. It’s actually a pretty tough and gritty romantic drama. I think people define it by the sentimental ending where Richard Gere, in his Navy Whites, sweeps Debra Winger off her feet...

Paramount is updating “An Officer and a Gentleman” with Miles Teller set to star.
Teller will take on the lead role in the modern take on the 1982 classic starring Richard Gere, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning the best original song prize for “Up Where We Belong” and marking Louis Gossett Jr.’s historic achievement of becoming the first Black best supporting actor Oscar winner.
“An Officer and a Gentleman” centered on Gere’s Zack Mayo, an aspiring Navy aviator who clashes with his hard-nosed drill instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley (Gossett) while navigating a budding romance with Paula (Debra Winger), a factory worker with dreams of getting out of her small town. The Taylor Hackford-directed romantic drama was also a box office smash, earning $190 million globally.
Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of the script for the new movie, following a draft written by Matt Johnson.

Oscar-nominated Debra Winger is one of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation. She burst onto the film scene in 1980 with “Urban Cowboy” and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for “Officer” and “Terms”). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger’s characters for love with the right person.
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993’s “A Dangerous Woman” as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993’s “Shadowlands.” However, after 1995’s romantic comedy “Forget Paris,” Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then. The idea of retiring at the peak of one’s career was...

Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.
In the “Challengers” press tour, Zendaya (also a producer here) — with six of her previous seven live-action theatrical releases having domestic grosses of $100 million or more — took pains to dispel...
