When first-time documentary director Leonard Manzella premieres his award-winning “Shoe Shine Caddie” at the Portobello Film Festival in London on September 16, it will represent a kind of return to the former actor’s roots in the international film scene.

When you think of body horror, "The Fly" is easily a Top 10 contender among the most influential entries. Both the 1958 original and the '86 remake thrilled audiences in very different ways. While the original relied on costuming and admittedly shoddy (by today's standards) visual effects, the remake arrived in a decade famously known for its stomach-turning practical effects. Yet both managed to push the envelope on horror storytelling that often went over the edge, perhaps even taking things way too far.

The first film, directed by Kurt Neumann, was based upon a 1957 short story of the same name. It became a box office success and spawned two sequels, 1959's "Return of the Fly" and "Curse of the Fly" in 1965. Despite a rough road from idea to creation, director David Cronenberg's 1986 remake flipped everything about the original on its head. A sequel, simply titled "The Fly II," followed three years...

With Halloween approaching quickly, we have one final round of home media releases headed our way this week in case you’re looking to pick up some last-minute films to check out this spooky season. Blue Underground is releasing Daughters of Darkness in 4K this Tuesday, and Severin Films is keeping busy with an array of titles, including The Black Cat, Patrick Still Lives, and Shock Treatment.

Vinegar Syndrome also has quite the lineup of films coming home this week, including Grave Robbers, Memorial Valley Massacre, Zombie 5: Killing Birds, and several Amityville sequels. August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.

Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.

The Fly remains one of sci-fi’s strangest and most iconic franchises.

The Fly -- the 1958 version or the 1986 remake, take your pick -- stands as one of the most memorable sci-fi/horror hybrids of its time. It is arguable exactly when the first so-called spaghetti western was filmed (some critics go all the way back to 1943), but there isn’t much argument about when the genre was popularized, and that was with Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars, released in 1964 and quickly followed by even more commercial success with 1965’s For a Few Dollars More. Of all the Italian film genres, spaghetti westerns may have been the most popular worldwide, and literally hundreds were produced, spawning subgenres like Zapatas (political films that criticized imperialism), gunslingers (featuring bounty hunters), betrayal stories, tragic heroes, and even comedy westerns.

The height of the spaghetti western craze was 1968, with 1969 seeing a marked decrease in these types of films being produced. Even though the cycle lasted well into the 1970’s—and some of the best of the genre were produced during that time—the genre was...

We have a busy week of horror and sci-fi entertainment releases to look forward to, especially for those of you cult and indie horror fans out there. Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Lucio Fulci’s insane Cat in the Brain to Blu-ray, and the recent indie thriller Road Games is getting a release on July 12th as well, courtesy of Scream Factory. One of my personal favorites from 2016, Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room arrives on both formats this Tuesday via Lionsgate, and Synapse Films is releasing the recent Creepshow documentary Just Desserts.

Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for July 12th include Model Hunger, Slasher: Season One, 13 Cameras, the Steelbook edition of Blood and Black Lace, and Pop Art editions of The Birds, Psycho, and King Kong.

I wouldn’t mind that a bit, though I must say I wouldn’t want to do them exclusively.” He intimated that he and his co-star had discussed a possible future pairing in “a light comedy” motion-picture. Alas, it was not to be; the two actors would not work together again. Cabot, of course, would soldier on and enjoy success as both a television personality and a recognizable voice-over actor. Though he's perhaps best known for writing The Scarlet Letter, author Nathaniel Hawthorne also left his mark on the macabre, penning tales that can still be told to chilling effect around the campfire. Three of these stories made it onscreen in Sidney Salkow's 1963 anthology horror film, Twice-Told Tales. Not long after announcing they are bringing Burnt Offerings to Blu-ray and DVD this October, Kino Lorber has revealed they have another Halloween goodie up their sleeve, as they will also release Twice-Told Tales on Blu-ray and DVD before the flickering flames of jack-o'-lanterns cast shadows across your doorstep.

Via Facebook, Kino Lorber announced they will release Twice-Told Tales (1963) on Blu-ray and DVD with a brand new HD transfer this October.

The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s...

When I received an unsolicited screener of a new film called The Scarlet Worm from Unearthed Films, I let it languish for weeks. Finally, primarily because it is a Western, I got around to viewing it. It's a gritty, grim affair that ranks among the best independent movies I've seen lately. However, I was curious about the cast members because, as talented as they are, I had not heard of any of them. The reason why became clear when I looked at the "making of..." extras on the Blu-ray. Incredibly, this ambitious movie was put together by a team of virtual strangers who met each other on-line. They conceived of the plot and shot the movie on such a low budget that they had to live in an abandoned house that had been foreclosed by a bank. When viewed from this context, The Scarlet Worm is an even more impressive achievement.

2011 is the birthday centennial for Vincent Price, and the anniversary was celebrated by various magazines, blogs, film screenings and other events that honored the late actor. It was most memorably observed in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, where the Vincentennial was marked by a series of events organized primarily by Price fan Tom Stockman. Local newspaper reporter Raymond Castile and I attended many of the screenings, interviews, museum and gallery events in the more-than-month-long observance of the multifaceted man many think of as the “King of Horror.”

The first Spaghetti Western Film Festival will take place in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 19. There will be big screen showings of a A Fistful of Dollars and a soon-to-be announced film premiering through Wild East Productions. There will also be live music and guests including Brett Halsey, Michael Forest and Robert Woods. There will be screenings of rare Spaghetti Western trailers as well. Click here for details.

Westerns have their constants -- drunken brawls, gunfights, cowboys, barren landscapes -- but the genre is rather malleable and can support all kinds of interesting narrative and thematic angles.  For example, consider the indie western called The Scarlet Worm. It's about, of all things, abortion.

The Scarlet Worm seems to be going for a Spaghetti Western vibe as evidenced by the trailer, its gritty subject matter -- John Ford didn't make movies about cathouse abortions -- and a cast that includes actors such as Dan van Husen (Sartana, A Bullet for Sandoval) and Montgomery Ford aka Brett Halsey (Cut Throats Nine).

The independent Western The Scarlet Worm is about to go into production, with 1960s leading man Brett Halsey returning to the screen in a lead role. Halsey was a popular presence in European films of the era. We're exactly two months away from the second annual Monsterpalooza, which is returning to the Marriott Burbank Convention Center April 9-11, 2010. Proving yet again that Lucio Fulci didn’t make movies like anybody else, his Cat In The Brain (a.k.a. Nightmare Concert, coming in a two-dvd set March 31 from Grindhouse) is a difficult movie to nail down into a single genre. With almost equal parts psychological horror, faux self-documentary awareness and enough stock footage from the director’s previous films to almost make this movie feel like a clip reel, it is both a self-reflexive statement on the illusion machine known as cinema and an intellectual fart unleashed in a crowded elevator.

From the opening scene of a literal cat tearing its way through Fulci’s fevered brain to the final shot of the maestro sailing away with a young beauty on a yacht christened the Perversion, this film is a head-scratcher. Any fan of Fulci who’s gone past his zombie/hell films has probably heard of A Cat in the Brain, the 1990 experiment in which Fulci stars as himself in a twisted tale of a filmmaker driven by his creations. It’s never been available in any decent format here in the U.S. but come March 31st, 2009, Grindhouse Releasing plans to change all that.

Lists are breezy reads, but there can be an unfortunate disposability to the data because arbitrarily numbered "Ten Best" somethings or "Five Things You Should Know About" whatevers literally demonstrate quantity's domination over quality. And now that I've sucked all the fun out of the room, here's a practical but otherwise unranked list of ten auteurist gems . nine of which are already on DVD . that deserve their layers of dust blown off.
