This post contains spoilers for "Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462."
Early in its eight-season run, AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" crossed over into a 16-part web series, "Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462," which followed the breakout of the zombie apocalypse aboard a commercial flight bound for Phoenix, Arizona. In the series, Michelle Ang's character, Alex, is always one step ahead of the other passengers when it comes to dealing with "walkers." She can recognize the signs that a person is infected, knows when to tie them up or lock them in the restroom, and knows where to aim a gun or knitting needle in order to put one down.
In real life, however, Ang was much more in the dark than her character when it came to her place in the "Walking Dead" universe. "Flight 462" premiered in October 2015, the same day that "Fear the Walking Dead" wrapped up its first season.

Not a companion piece to Unseen, The Unheard is a new Shudder Original that combine the talents of Jeffrey A. Brown, who previously directed The Beach House and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen whose credits include Crawl and The Ward. It’s the story of Chloe who caught meningitis and spent six months in a coma as a child. She awoke to find that she had lost her hearing.
More importantly, she had lost her mother as well. She disappeared without a trace during those months. She and her father moved to Maine and she’s tried to put it behind her and get on with her life.
Now a young woman she’s returned to Massachusetts and her family’s Wellfleet summer house...

Plot: Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental procedure to restore her hearing. So she begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations related to the vanishing of her mother.
Review: The Unheard is mostly a story of young Chloe getting her hearing back. But it’s a bit more complicated than that. The supernatural twist of her hearing her dead mother through white noise feels like an element we haven’t seen in a while (Michael Keaton’s White Noise anyone?). I was reminded a lot of the film Sound of Metal, since both deal with the process of trying to hear again. Obviously, they’re very different (this one has a lot more murder), but in broad strokes, there are many similarities. One aspect I absolutely loved was Chloe’s clear fear of putting in her earplugs at night. It’s almost like a “What if I never hear again?” moment that she goes through nightly.

Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.
With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!
You can watch the video interview with Jeffrey below, and in case you missed it, read Cass Clarke's review of The Unheard!

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

Up first, BayView Entertainment and Vipco have released Skarecrow: A Curse Never Dies today, which looks to be an ultra-low-budget indie film centered on a killer scarecrow.
In the film, “When the vile James Brothers murder an innocent woman to take over her land, her dying breath places a curse on the family through a scarecrow. Years later, a descendent of the James family has taken his friends to the old cabin for the weekend. They soon find the curse and the scarecrow are still wanting blood.

"I think something's wrong with the procedure. I'm hearing things..." Shudder has revealed a trailer for an indie horror film titled The Unheard, the latest creation from the director of The Beach House. It will be streaming on Shudder later this month. Lachlan Watson stars as Chloe, who undergoes an experimental procedure to restore her hearing. She begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother. The director adds: "Our cast and crew have delivered a stunning piece of work and I cannot wait for audiences to take our trip into the strange realms between life & death and silence & noise!" From the writers of the Crawl film. The cast includes Michele Hicks, Nick Sandow, Brendan Meyer, Shunori Ramanathan, and Boyana Balta. This looks unsettling, especially with all the sounds. // Continue Reading ›...

The Friendship Game is a Canadian horror movie directed by Scooter Corkle, starring Peyton List, Brendan Meyer and Jennifer Copping.
A teen and YA horror flick that could have been better. A promising premise, a disappointing production.
Premise
A group of friends come across a strange artifact that will put their friendship at risk. All the while, a hacker watches them with her spyware.
Movie Review
Do you know when a movie is not particularly well elaborated and the story is a bit disappointing? ‘The Friendship Game’ is one such example. Following a rather flat start, and despite it, you think to yourself, “oh, I will give it a chance.” Because the premise seems promising, and we expect it to tell us a story with multiple narratives, and think, “it might actually be worth the while.”
Unfortunately, that is not the case, but, hey, we did give it a chance.

"If your friendships don't survive the game, neither do you." Rlje Films has revealed an official trailer for The Friendship Game, a horror thriller from Canadian filmmaker Scooter Corkle. A group of teenagers in a small town discover a strange metal object that tests the resilience of their friendship. When one of the best friends goes missing after playing the game, our characters are forced to look inward, mostly through the eyes of our lead character Zooza as she wrestles with her fear of abandonment and resentment of her absent father. She must confront the monster within or no one will survive the game. Sounds freaky! This stars Peyton List, Brendan Meyer, Kelcey Mawema, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, and Dylan Schombing. I dig the cool Hellraiser-esque game object in this, but the rest of it looks like a super obvious and campy story about growing up and friends and trauma. Can't...

Welcome back to a new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! This month we’re talking to Lindsay Traves, a horror/Batman/lotsa stuff expert who has bylines all over town, including Comics Gaming Magazine, Bloody Disgusting, Grim Journal, and of course right here at Daily Dead. She’s also stepped into co-hosting duties for The Pod and the Pendulum, a “weekly podcast covering every horror movie franchise, one movie and one episode at a time.”
For this month’s movie, Traves finally got me to dive into a film with a rabid following and a Gif that serves as Thirst Twitter’s answer to “do you read Sutter Cane?” I’m talking, of course, about Adam Wingard’s 2014 action/slasher hybrid, The Guest. The film follows a mysterious soldier named David (Dan Stevens), who shows up at the doorstep of the Peterson family claiming to be a friend of their late son Caleb,...

I consider myself to be a big fan of Hp Lovecraft’s work. However, much like the band “Guided by Voices” I tend to subconsciously filter out an awful lot of quite poor output, and just remember the good bits.
Lovecraft wrote some great horror, but for the most part it is the greater Lovecraftian universe that the writer set up, that has the most interesting part of his legacy for me. A lot of his writing is, not the greatest and people are right to note the racism and fear that runs right through his works. I always get the sense that Lovecraft was quite a pathetic, pitiable, frightened man, eating his tinned green beans cold and being frightened...

SpectreVision, the production company behind the 2019 Lovecraft adaptation “Color Out of Space,” said Wednesday night that it has cut ties with Richard Stanley, the film’s director, after Stanley was accused of abuse by his former partner.
“SpectreVision will no longer work with Richard Stanley,” the company said in a statement posted on Twitter. “We are proud of the talented cast and crew behind Color Out Of Space. Yet we are horrified about the charges against its director. We will be donating future revenue from the film to charities devoted to stopping domestic violence.”
In a blog post Tuesday, Stanley’s former partner, Scarlett Amaris detailed multiple instances of abuse and said she filed charges against him in France in 2014.

Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror-genre streaming platform, continues to bolster its burgeoning lineup of original content; an endeavor that’s especially prudent as the theatrical distribution pipeline continues to be halted in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Indeed, its latest cinematic addition, Color Out of Space, brings a unique offering starring Nicolas Cage.
The exclusive streaming rights to director Richard Stanley’s extraterrestrial outbreak film, Color Out of Space, along with Frank Sabatella’s vampire-centric The Shed—each a production of Rjle Films—have been acquired by Shudder, which will make the movies available to stream in the U.S. later this year on a date to be determined.
As Shudder General Manager Craig Engler expresses of the acquisitions in a statement:
“We’re thrilled to be bringing Shudder members Stanley’s masterful adaptation of one of H.P. Lovecraft’s most influential stories—as well as another unforgettable Nicolas Cage...

Nicolas Cage is certainly building on his resume of genre-driven films with the new sci-fi horror pic Color Out of Space, which opens in limited release January 24. The film marks the first feature from celebrated cult filmmaker Richard Stanley since Hardware.
Based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the film follows Nathan Gardner (Cage) and his family after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm. As things unravel, the family finds themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.
The film, which Stanley co-wrote with Scarlett Amaris also stars Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer, Julian Hilliard, Elliot Knight, Q’orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong.
The U.S. rights to the film were acquired by Rlje Films ahead of its Midnight Madness premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September. Based on the trailer (which you can watch below), the film is very much in the same vein of Mandy a fever dream of a thriller that also starred Cage. Like Mandy, the film is produced by Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision and Xyz films. Mandy banked a worldwide gross of $1,335,484.
Color Out of Space is produced by SpectreVision’s Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Lisa Whalen and Elijah Wood. Executive producers are Timur Bekbosunov, Johnny Chang, Emma Lee and Peter Wong for Ace Pictures, which is also financing. Stacy Jorgensen serves as executive producer for SpectreVision.
The modern-day B-movie has already garnered a cult audience and has been gaining traction since its world premiere at Tiff with an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is set to open in 75 theaters with an additional 150 one-night-only eventized screenings at Regal, Drafthouse, AMC, Landmark and various independent chains.
Todd Robinson’s all-star Vietnam drama The Last Full Measure starring Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer and William Hurt will also debut this we The film follows the true story of Vietnam War hero William H. Pitsenbarger (Jeremy Irvine), a U.S. Air Force Pararescuemen medic who personally saved over 60 men in the Army’s 1st Infantry Division during a devastating 1966 battle, losing his own life in the process.
Fast forward 32 years later and Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman (Stan) is tasked with investigating a Congressional Medal of Honor request for Pitsenbarger made by his best friend and partner on the mission (Hurt) and his parents (Plummer and Diane Ladd). Scott seeks out the testimony of Army veterans who witnessed Pitsenbarger’s heroic rescues He talks to Takoda (Samuel L. Jackson), Burr (Peter Fonda) and Mott (Ed Harris), but as he more about Pitsenbarger’s courageous acts, he uncovers a high-level conspiracy behind the decades-long denial of the medal, prompting him to put his own career on the line to seek justice for the fallen airman. The film also stars LisaGay Hamilton, Amy Madigan, Linus Roache, John Savage, Alison Sudol and Bradley Whitford.

Also opening this weekend is the Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari-directed Panga, which is inspired by the life of a national level Kabaddi player from India. The film starring Kangana Ranaut, Jassie Gill, Richa Chadda, Neena Gupta and Yagya Bhasin is set to open globally on January 24 with over 100 theaters across North America.
The female-fronted pic is very much a “second act” type of story that sheds light on the ups and downs of a middle-class Indian woman who is a forgotten world champion of the popular South Asian sport of Kabaddi. She looks to give a new meaning to her existing role as a wife and mother and makes the choice to return to the sport and in turn, challenges age stereotypes and a new generation complexities. In turn, she creates an upheaval in her life as she is torn between family responsibility and love for the sport.
Detective Chinatown 3 will also debut this weekend and will continue the wildly successful action-comedy buddy franchise starring Baiqiang Wang and Haoran Liu. The third installment finds detectives Tang Ren and Qin Feng in Tokyo as they investigate a crime alongside Noda Hiroshi (Satoshi Tsumabuki). As a result, a hilarious battle of detectives ensue. With Chen Sicheng returning to the director’s chair, the film is one of the biggest U.S. releases of a Chinese-language film. The first installment debuted in 2015 and earned $125,112,232 in China and $474,252 stateside while the 2018 sequel earned a mind-boggling $541,406,438 at the Chinese box office and $1,983,984 domestically.

Chicago – Richard Stanley has finally steered clear from one of the most infamous chapters of movie history. His new narrative feature film is “Color Out of Space.” It is his first since being let go from the 1996 “The Island of Dr. Moreau.” After much gnashing of teeth and a documentary about it later, Stanley went back to his childhood roots for “Color,” a horror sci-fi epic featuring Nicolas Cage.

January just got a whole lot better–and stranger. Only a year after Mandy, Nicolas Cage is back with another acclaimed gonzo feature, this time entering a world perfectly fitting for the actor, that of H.P. Lovecraft. Directed by Richard Stanley, Color Out of Space finds Cage’s character and his family as strange happenings occur when a meteorite touches down on their farm. Following its Tiff premiere and ahead of its January release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Josh Lewis said in our Tiff review, “Stanley approaches this narrative with a true sense of wackiness, really leaning into the ridiculousness of the daughter riding her horse through ancient New England forests with Satanic tattoos like she’s in an 80s fantasy film or Cage yelling about milking Alpacas at the local water surveyor for some reason. No people would act the way they do in this film and...

Color Out of Space is the latest feature from actor Nicolas Cage and production company SpectreVision. Film fans can see some of SpectreVisions' unique visual style from one of their previous, amazing film's Mandy (2018). Full of vibrant colours, the first trailer for Color Out of Space shows a world turned upside down, after a meteor strike. This title will show in theatres and on Digital platforms this January. Also starring Joely Richardson (Event Horizon), Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer and Julian Hilliard, Color Out of Space blends sci-fi and horror, at a remote ranch. The film's first trailer is here. South African director Richard Stanley helms this film enterprise. Film aficionados might recognize Stanley from his work on The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). This earlier project broke Stanley down in the Australian Outback as the stress over a remote shooting and creative differences caused serious challenges. Director John Frankenheimer (Reindeer Games) would.

Nicolas Cage stars in Color Out of Space, adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s story about a mysterious meteor’s effect on a small town.
Color Out of Space may be one of many when it comes to star Nicolas Cage’s current spate of debt-decreasing payday pictures, but this one arrives with the unique context of being a wantonly wild adaptation of a story by legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
This prospective new source of “Cage Rage” memes has the iconic headliner playing a family man whose farm estate existence becomes incredibly inconvenienced when a meteorite lands on his front yard; an event that becomes the catalyst for an outbreak of a mutant virus that runs roughshod across his Massachusetts small town, jeopardizing his family and neighbors.
Famously embattled South African horror auteur Richard Stanley serves as director here, working off a screenplay that he co-wrote with Scarlett Amaris,...

Nothing good can come from an introspective and seemingly content Nicolas Cage muttering that he’s finally “living the dream,” especially in a film directed by beleaguered filmmaker Richard Stanley and inspired by a classic short by H.P. Lovecraft. Such is the general shape of Stanley’s wild return to feature filmmaking, “Color Out of Space,” which follows Cage and company as they attempt a quiet life in the country, only to be hit (literally and figuratively) by a malevolent alien organism that materializes as vivid color.
Per the film’s intriguingly slight official synopsis, “after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.” The film also stars Joely Richardson as Nathan’s wife, along with Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer,...

“The way it’s made an’ the way it works ain’t like no way o’ God’s world. It’s some’at from beyond.”
— H.P. Lovecraft, Color Out of Space
Color Out of Space has long been one of H.P. Lovecraft’s scariest stories and central to that is its focus on a fear of not just the unknowable but the intangible, the things happening all around us all the time that we can’t even begin to perceive or comprehend. Lovecraft himself saw the story as a direct confrontation of contemporary sci-fi writers who thought of aliens in terms of human physicality and organization; a rebuke of the idea that when contact is made that we could remotely understand or be understood.
This is precisely why South African genre filmmaker Richard Stanley was an excellent choice to adapt it. Before being sent to director’s jail for...
