“Nobody messes with my family!” shouts Queen Latifah, aiming a revolver at baddies during a late moment in “End of the Road.” It is one of several points in this Netflix thriller where the blatancy of undiluted cliché has an effect rather more comical than intended. Taking a brisk route from the pedestrian to the preposterous, Millicent Shelton’s slick but silly film diminishes its social-commentary edge by painting an African American family’s cross-country trip in cartoonishly broad terms, imperiled by crazy and/or criminal “crackers” at every junction.
Director and cast do their best — well, maybe not their best, but their competent professional duty — with a formulaic, contrived screenplay. Still, the results do no one much credit, landing closer to overripe cheese than taut suspense, or even guilty-pleasure terrain. “End” launches on the streamer Sept. 9.

"You have the biggest heart of any man I know." An international trailer has debuted for the indie comedy Ideal Home, the latest feature made by Hamlet 2 (remember that one?) director Andrew Fleming. Ideal Home is both written and directed by Fleming, and is about a wealthy, bickering gay couple whose life is turned inside out when a ten-year old boy shows up at their door claiming to be Erasmus' grandson. This is a familiar story, but the twist is the two dads aspect. Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd star as Erasmus and Paul, and the cast also includes Jake McDorman, Jesse Luken, Jack Gore, and Alison Pill. This looks surprisingly warm-hearted, not as overtly comedic as I was expecting from that description. Give it a watch. Here's the first international trailer for Andrew Fleming's Ideal Home, direct from YouTube:...

You’re Next was my favourite films of last year, so I was very excited to see director Adam Wingard’s latest, The Guest. David (Dan Stevens, apparently best known for appearing in Downton Abbey), a former member of the deceased’s squad turns up unannounced one day to pay his respects, stays the night and finds himself ingratiated into the family’s life, sticking up for the bullied younger brother, providing dad with a drinking buddy, keeping an eye out for gothy older sister and generally being very nice to mum. Season 5 of Justified is over, but there’s plenty to talk about last night’s season finale, “Retribution”. Here are seven Focus Points on the finale and their effect on the series final season next year.
1. Raylan and Kendal have a chat
With one of the themes of the season being separation (Kendal from Wendy, Raylan from Art, Ava from Boyd, and even Raylan from Winona and daughter) there’s a nice reinforcement of Raylan trying to reach out to troubled kids who come from rough upbringings. Loretta McCready actually bet on his heroic nature. Raylan tried to prevent Kendal from entrusting his future with Daryl with his radio winnings, but as Raylan knows, you can’t escape who you’re born with. Raylan knew how to break the kid down and get him to say what he needed to confirm that he didn’t do it–even if he didn’t give up Daryl.

So far on "Star-Crossed," Eric is a d-bag. Like, a super-mega a-hole, really. But that is going to change thanks to certain events that transpire during the fourth episode of "Star-Crossed," "And Left No Friendly Drop." Jesse Luken, who plays your new favorite jock with an anger management problem, says that episode 4 is when he started to sympathize with his character.
"I think it's when I, as the actor, felt the most sympathy for him," Luken tells Zap2it. "I think you start to get a little sense of where he's coming from, which I think is important. We all know a**holes in the world, but it's interesting sometimes to see why these people act the way that they do."
Besides -- if you look at it from Eric's point of view, his crappy life is 100 percent due to the aliens who invaded his town, then his school, and now his swim team.

After three episodes, Star-Crossed has proved to have more depth than a normal teenage romance would usually have. It takes place in a complex world with complicated relationships between the Human and Atrian communities.
Jesse Luken portrays a high school student, Eric, who has a blatant disdain for the Atrians. I spoke with Luken about Eric's evolution, the friendship with maybe-Red Hawk Grayson, and the dynamic between the show's two extremist groups.

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of Justified, “Whistle Past the Graveyard” written by Chris Provenzano and directed by Peter Werner, stop reading now. As he’ll do throughout the season, showrunner Graham Yost takes us inside the writers room.
Entertainment Weekly: Did you know at the start of the season that Wendy (Alicia Witt) was the mother of Kendal (Jacob Lofland), not his sister?
Graham Yost: Absolutely no idea.
Really?
It’s like last year when we were talking, and you said, “Did you know that Shelby was gonna be Drew Thompson?” and I said,...

If you watch "Justified" with any regularity, you've seen Jesse Luken quite a bit. You may not, however, heard much of him.
Luken plays Jimmy, Boyd's (Walton Goggins) right-hand man on the show. The character is smart, dependable -- and quiet. It's the nature of the role that while Jimmy is on screen quite a bit with Boyd, he doesn't say much. Luken says he's learned to handle those kinds of scenes.
"The trap that you can fall into is to just sort of watch the action happen," he tells Zap2it. "You are watching the action happen, but as his No. 2, I'm the guy that's supposed to be guarding him and protecting him. ... You do occasionally get lost as an actor because Walton is so brilliant and all the rest of the actors on the show are so wonderful that you're just like 'Wow, I'm watching a play right now.

Matt Lanter, will you be our valentine? Your crush on the "Star-Crossed" heartthrob will be that much stronger when you watch this exclusive sneak peek at the CW drama's series premiere.
In Zap2it's first look at a pivotal scene from the episode, we meet Roman (Lanter) as we will see him frequently throughout the series: saving the day. It's the first day of school for Roman, his sister, Sophia (Brina Palencia), and the five other alien teenagers integrating into the local Louisiana high school in the year 2024.
But not everyone is happy for the Atrians' arrival -- Eric (Jesse Luken) is particularly unhappy about all the progress being made and picks Sophia to harass in the hallway. Don't worry, Roman comes to her rescue -- right before Eric sucker-punches him in the face.
It's the "Star-Crossed" equivalent of "Welcome to the O.C., b***," but with much higher stakes.
