One of the most unusual songs Soundgarden recorded was “Head Down” — a deep cut on their biggest-selling album, 1994’s Superunknown — that tumbles slowly over six minutes, adding crusts of snaky guitar and ear-twisting vocal harmonies until it settles as a clatter of percussion. Bassist Ben Shepherd wrote the song, but it was Chris Cornell who pushed the limits of his voice into the upper strata to sing Shepherd’s lyrics about cloaking depression in a smile. “We see you cry, we turn your head,” he sings like an onlooker to his own strife,...

Jerry Moss, co-founder of A&m Records, has died. He was 88.
According to Variety, the record exec — who along with his business partner, Herb Alpert, turned A&m into one of America’s leading independent record labels — died Wednesday at his home in Bel Air.
“They truly don’t make them like him anymore and we will miss conversations with him about everything under the sun. The twinkle in his eyes as he approached every moment ready for the next adventure,” his family said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Dionne Warwick, who wasn’t an A&m artist, but had been close to Moss ever since he helped promote her music in the early 1960s also released a statement, calling him one of the “kindest gentlemen” and her “dear friend.”

Halestorm revisit some of their past songs on the new EP Reimagined, out now. But the project isn’t a clichéd set of acoustic readings; instead, the hard-rock band stays true to the EP’s title and revamps the arrangements. Their 2009 debut single “I Get Off” taps into brooding funk, while 2012’s “Break In” becomes a duet between Lzzy Hale and Amy Lee of Evanescence.
The left-field head-turner, however, is a faithful cover of “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton and a signature hit for Whitney Houston.

Soundgarden and the estate of Tupac Shakur have pulled out of a class action suit against Universal Music Group over alleged damages sustained in a 2008 vault fire.
The notice of voluntary dismissal was filed Friday by Soundgarden and Tom Whalley, who represents the Tupac estate. It states that the two parties “hereby dismiss without prejudice their individual claims, and withdraw as a putative class representative.” However, it goes on to note that, “These two plaintiffs reserve their rights to proceed in this matter as absent class members.”

After composing the score for the King of Rock & Roll documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher in 2018, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has directed his attention to the Man in Black, reuniting with director Thom Zimny to create the soundtrack for The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash. A new doc about the mercurial country singer, the YouTube Originals production (premiering November 11th) looks at Cash’s tortured past — the accidental death of his older brother; his own damaging affair with drugs — and subsequent redemption through spirituality and his marriage to June Carter.

A recent tribute concert dubbed The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa in Huntington, New York had all the markings of a concert by the rock iconoclast from nerdy fans geeking out about the night’s guitar players before the show to doo-wop intro music but with one marked problem: Frank Zappa died in 1993. The mustachioed musician at the center of it all, playing alongside erstwhile members of Zappa’s band, wasn’t a real person at all. It was a hologram.

For a period of five years, Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon diligently chronicled his own life, videotaping himself with a Hi-8 video camera through every step of his musical journey — starting out in Indiana, through his meteoric rise to alt-rock icon, up to the day of his death in 1995. These captivating moments finally come to life, beautifully edited, in the new documentary “All I Can Say,” which premieres Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The film’s title is taken from the opening lines of Blind Melon’s instantly recognizable 1993 smash, “No Rain.” Culled entirely from Hoon’s archives, the footage is carefully crafted by Grammy-winning director Danny Clinch, along with co-directors Taryn Gould and Colleen Hennessy.
Years after Hoon’s passing, his girlfriend, Lisa Sinha, presented Clinch with a box full of tapes shot with the Hi-8 camera. What started as a different project about Blind Melon’s past...

Brad Pitt and Peter Berg’s Film 45 will document the late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman.
"Cry, if you want to cry," Chris Cornell sang on the song "My Wave." Brad Pitt and Peter Berg’s production company Film 45 will help you see and clear your eyes in a documentary about the late frontman and songwriter for Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, according to Variety. Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell, will participate as a producer. Paramount recently yanked Pitt's World War Z 2, which he hoped to make with Fight Club director David Fincher, from its production schedule. Berg will direct the as-yet-untitled movie. No other details of the Chris Cornell documentary have been announced.
Cornell died on May 18, 2017, a few hours after a Soundgarden show at Detroit's Fox Theater. His death was ruled a suicide. An autopsy revealed painkillers and anti-anxiety medication in Cornell's bloodstream.

A new documentary film centered on the life of Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell is in the works, Variety has learned.
The film will be produced by Cornell’s widow, Vicky, along with Brad Pitt and Peter Berg’s Film 45 production company, which focuses on non-scripted entertainment and branded content. Berg will direct.
Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden from the band’s incarnation in 1984 until they broke up in 1997. He went on to front Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine before Soundgarden reunited in 2011. The band was in the middle of touring when, on May 18, 2017, Cornell died after a show in Detroit. His death was ruled a suicide.
In January, Vicky Cornell and a number of the grunge icon’s fellow musicians, including Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, threw a benefit concert, “I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” at the Forum in Los Angeles.

After their late father won his third Grammy Award on Sunday night, Chris Cornell's two children took the stage during the nontelevised portion of the ceremony to accept the musician's posthumous award on his behalf. Cornell, who was previously the lead singer of bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, died by suicide in May 2017 at the age of 52. Sunday night saw him earning the Grammy for best rock performance for the song "When Bad Does Good," which was featured on an album of previously unreleased music that dropped over a year after his death.
"I never thought we'd be standing here without my dad, and I'm sure he would be proud and honored," Christopher Cornell, 13, said of his father. "He was known for many things. He is a rock icon, the godfather of grunge, and the creator of a movement whose contribution to music history made a lasting impact across genres and generations.

When Green River hit their groove, they played a vicious mix of snarling punk and gigantic hard-rock riffs. It was a heavy, menacing sound, and in the mid-Eighties, nobody really knew what to call it. “I think we just considered ourselves rock & roll guys who grew up on punk rock,” drummer Alex Shumway says now. “We realized that there was some music that we liked before we became hardcore kids that we were afraid we listened to, but then we admitted we liked it. And we started making music like that.

Ben Foster is pacing Manhattan trying to ignore the clamor. “Sorry about all the sirens!” he groans apologetically. Chris Cornell was an enigma. He could sound savage and tender at the same time. During his 52 years, he was grunge’s Golden God, a folky songsmith, a pop wailer and an easy-listening crooner. He possessed one of the most awe-inspiring voices of his generation, and possibly the greatest voice to emerge from grunge, and he could stretch it to work in any context. He even improbably made melisma sound cool in hard rock. Ultimately, there were many Chris Cornells. He could be looking California, feeling Minnesota or seeking a...

Pitt and Cornell's friendship goes back quite a ways, and so does the 53-year-old actor's admiration for the late rocker. In a 2004 interview, Pitt reportedly told Cinema Confidential, "I'm a big Chris Cornell addict, anything he does."

As you may have heard, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave recently passed away at the age of 52 in Detroit. According to CNN, It's currently being investigated as a "possible suicide". It's incredibly heartbreaking news, especially to his family, friends, and fans.
Outside of his contributions to soundtracks, Chris Cornell never really had a lot to do with the world of film, save one cameo. Cornell can be found in the grunge era film Singles, which stars Matt Dillon. You first see Cornell as he comes out to see the new sound system, and then later performing on stage during the film. You can watch his cameo in the video below

Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden, tragically committed suicide after playing a show in Detroit, Michigan at the Fox Theater according to The Independent. As a member of Soundgarden, he helped usher along an era of music that helped rid the music world of some of the pretensions and phoniness the music industry and built at that particular time. With his work in Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, and Audioslave, his legacy in the music industry will never be forgotten.
One aspect of his career that doesn't get much publicity is his work in film. With music in such films as Singles, Wayne's World, and Benny and June, his music helped fill the soundtrack of the movies of the 90's. One song he did, You Know My Name, helped usher in the modern era of James Bond as the lead in for Casino Royale.
The song itself is an underrated Bond movie classic theme.

The world will receive a posthumous gift from Chris Cornell on Friday. Just one day after the Soundgarden rocker was found dead in his Detroit hotel room, some of his never-before-heard music will be released. As you may recall, Cornell was featured on the soundtrack for the 1992 Matt Dillon-lead flick Singles. In honor of its 25th anniversary, Warner Bros. is releasing a two-disc reissue, which will feature unreleased material from the late rockstar, according to Spin. The bonus track will also include Cornell's "Nowhere But You," "Spoon Man," "Flutter Girl" and "Missing" among two other songs titled "Ferry Boat #3" and "Score Piece #4." There's...

Chris Cornell's music is spiking in sales on iTunes and Amazon. The leap was, of course, expected after his death -- but it's interesting to see what fans are connecting with most. The 20th anniversary reissue of Soundgarden's "Superunknown" is the #1 album on iTunes -- and his other band, Audioslave, has the #2 spot. His recordings are scattered all over Amazon's "Movers & Shakers" chart as well. In an odd coincidence ... some rare Cornell recordings...

The performer first came to fame in the late ’80s as the lead singer of Soundgarden, the Seattle-based group at the forefront of the grunge rock movement along with fellow Seattle bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

The only thing trailers love to use more than the "Inception" Braaaahm! is a moody, slowed-down cover of a popular song.
"Suicide Squad" is the latest trailer to take advantage of this trend, with its version of the Bee Gees' "I Started a Joke." Here are 13 more movie previews that make good use of great covers.
1. "Creep" in "The Social Network" (2010)
Arguably the trailer that started this trend, this preview uses a children's choir cover of Radiohead's song perfectly -- making us want to buy All the tickets to see the Facebook movie.
2. "Happy Together" in "The Great Gatsby" (2013)
Remember Filter? Lots of drives to high school were scored to this band, but Baz Luhrmann may have found an even better use for their vocal stylings in this kinda badass trailer for his 2013 film.
3. "Once Upon a Dream" in "Maleficent" (2014)
Covering a song from "Sleeping Beauty" in your movie based on that film's villain?...

Remember the '90s? Sure you do. The music was grungier. The Marky Marks were Markier. You had to choose between your phone and the Internet. And the ponytails were occasionally sideways.
Well, if you somehow missed the decade due to an interference in the time-space continuum — or you just happen to be really young — we've assembled 15 movie clips that best represent what life, or at least movies, were like during that glorious decade. A '90s time capsule, if you will. So sit back, relax and throw on your favorite starter jacket.

This weekend will find Aubrey Plaza, Bill Hader and Andy Samberg flashing back to 1993 in "The To Do List." Naturally, we've decided to do the same. Because the Internet remains perennially hungry for '90s nostalgia and because there's no better way to recall the time period than through its movies, here's a look at the decade's quintessential depictions in film.

Julie Delpy's floor-length dress and Ethan Hawke's leather jacket could almost hold up today, but it's the dilapidated T-shirts worn underneath that make them so utterly '90s.

When I first saw The Avengers on the big screen I worried if it could be as large and as magnificent on the smaller screen. Few blockbuster films had achieved such success in creating a fun experience and the size of screen help sell audiences on the Marvel Universe gone wild. But believe me, true believers, if you have a tricked out home theater this is one of the essential blu-ray purchases you’ll make this year.
The Avengers accomplished Marvel Studios’ Phase I in spades. It collected all of these larger than life characters established in other films, and put them on a bigger stage against more unimaginable villains for the big screen. They used the solo films to develop these characters and then brought the all-star cast together to accomplish a few more goals–besides making gobs of money, that is: 1) To kick cinema ass. 2) Expand the horizons...

Revenge is a dish best served, well, you know the rest. And if there are two characters who know all about revenge, it’s Sam and Dean. Isn’t their initial quest all about avenging a murder, the thing that motivated them all along? And as we all know, a long ways back, they avenged. It seemed that anger at the needless death would have subsided and yes, it did seemingly. There was that fantastic story arc in season four where Sam went dark side and he and Dean fought and fought hard. I loved it. I relished in it. But, like all things, they healed. They moved on. But, all old wounds have this nasty habit of opening up and ripping at you with...

The Avengers hardly needs introduction or review at this point, and the Blu-Ray release is an awfully easy sell, but for those not automatically in the no-brainer category, the release has a lot going for it.
Already labeled frequently as among the best, if not the best, superhero efforts we’ve had the pleasure of viewing, The Avengers is one of those rare films that actually lives up to the hype. This is largely due to another rare quality the film possesses, and that’s its ability to avoid losing the substance in the midst of all the flash and style. Once you have a film with Iron Man and Thor bashing each other around, it’s easy to lose sight of the idea that we’ve still got to construct a story that engages.

The Avengers (Blu-ray) Directed by: Joss Whedon Written by: Joss Whedon (screenplay), Zak Penn and Joss Whedon (story) Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner At this point there can't be many people left in the world who are unfamiliar with The Avengers. When the movie hit theatres back in May, there may still have been some minor concerns about this particular line-up of superheroes being second stringers in the eyes of the general public, but these concerns were soon obliterated as it went on to become the third highest grossing movie of all time. Now that it has arrived on DVD and Blu-ray, it's not really a question of whether the movie is worth your time, it's more a question of whether or not it holds up to repeat viewings. Is it a must own title for your home movie collection?...

The Avengers arrived on Blu-ray on September 18th, and I had the chance to watch it for the third time since it smashed box office records this summer. If you look back at the amount of posts for this film prior to its release, during its release, and since then, you will have an idea of the geek hysteria that The Avengers created. The main reason that this film is such a phenomenon is because of Joss Whedon. If there's anyone who could have successfully pulled off a storyline that gave an appropriate amount of screen time to all of the superheroes, it's Whedon. Avengers is a must-own on Blu-ray, period.

That’s more like it. After Soundgarden returned earlier this year with the perfect pleasant but rather generic "Live To Rise" from “The Avengers,” today we got a better taste of what to expect on “King Animal,” the band’s first album since 1996’s “Down On the Upside.” “Been Away Too Long” is a hard-charging, snarling rock blast with a wicked little Middle Eastern guitar lick that inserts itself briefly before it sounds like someone starts banging on a trashcan lid. [More after the jump...] On the song, which leaked briefly yesterday before being yanked by the label, Chris Cornell has had enough...

Many of the comment that follow are lifted directly from a blog post I wrote after seeing Marvel’s The Avengers opening weekend. I stand by these words and note that I have since then seen it in 2-D in a theater and on my home screen via the just-released Combo Pack. The movie is so well-crafted as to remain entertaining on repeated viewings.
Disney Home Entertainment has released this in a dizzying assortment of collections, some exclusive to certain retailers, such as the Walmart one that comes with a graphic novel by Peter David and an army of artists. The four-disc commercial set comes with the 3-D and 2-D Blu-ray discs, standard DVD, and digital copy. This one also has a link to download music inspired by the film. What I was sent for review is the slightly less spiffy two disc set (Blu-ray and DVD) but it is certainly sufficient.

How big a "Singles" fan are you? You may have worn out your CD of the best-selling soundtrack and made a pilgrimage to the landmark apartment house in Seattle. And you probably know all the cameos: Eric Stoltz is the mime that won't shut up, Tim Burton is the dating video director, and that's Jeremy Piven as a hyper supermarket clerk chatting up lead Campbell Scott. But for the film's 20th anniversary (it was released on Sept. 18, 1992) we've unearthed 25 things you might not know about "Singles," including that it was once set in Arizona or that it might have starred Johnny Depp(!). 1. "Singles" was in the works as early as 1984 and was originally going to be set in Phoenix, Arizona. 2. The movie took a different course after the 1990 death of Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone (whose remaining members would go on to form Pearl Jam.). As...

In 1992, while thousands of musicians threw on their flannel, strapped on a motorcycle wallet and converged on Seattle in hopes of becoming the next Nirvana, I was one of the few people moving away from the hottest city in the country. I'd been writing for the local music monthly The Rocket since 1988 and by 1991, I was (sad to say) more than a little burned out on the scene. So when Cameron Crowe began filming "Singles," his follow-up to "Say Anything," I wasn't one of those flocking to become an extra or trying to get a glimpse of oft-sighted star Matt Dillon, who was playing the lead singer of faux grunge band Citizen Dick. When the movie finally opened in September 1992, I caught a screening in San Francisco. I expected to see some faces I knew, but I was not expecting to see my own name on the big screen, even...
