Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.

The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.

Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.

Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.

The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

A relatively new filmmaker on the scene having premiered his pre-feature work at Sundance and SXSW, we learned that Sean Wang has begun production on DìDi (弟弟) — a feature film project that was selected for the 2023 Sundance Screenwriters Lab & Directors Lab and just prior to that landed a 2021 Sffilm Rainin Grant. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is bringing its nostalgia-fueled bombast to the home market with an official digital and Blu-ray release! The explosive battle between the Autobot, Decepticons, and Maximals rolls onto digital starting on July 11, with the official 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD hitting shelves on October 10.

Paramount is delaying the release of the next animated feature in the Transformers Universe, Transformers One. Initially set for release on July 19, 2024, the film will open nationwide on September 12, 2024. Josh Cooley directs from a script by Andrew Barrer, Steve Desmond, and Gabriel Ferrari. Focusing on an origin story set on Cybertron, Transformers One revolves around the relationship and rivalry of Autobot Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and the Decepticon Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry). The Robots in Disguise return to theaters with a new mission the weekend of June 9, and analysts are already crunching numbers for the film’s summertime debut. According to Hollywood trend watchers and number hounds, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts could make $68M to $70M in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada.

That number is impressive after 2018’s Bumblebee opened to $21.6M in the domestic market, while Transformers: The Last Knight did $44.6M over a $68.4M Wednesday through Sunday window. If Transformers: Rise of the Beasts performs as expected, the action-packed installment inspired by a nostalgic property will be another win for the recovering box office. For those keeping track, Fast X is racing toward a $60M debut, with Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid swimming toward $110M. Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Acorss the Spider-Verse could web up $80M, setting the summer box office on fire.

Tribeca Festival has announced the lineup of its 2023 festival, which includes new films from actors Chelsea Peretti and David Duchovny and documentaries about Rock Hudson and news anchor Dan Rather.

This year’s event, which takes place from June 7-18, will feature 109 feature films from 127 filmmakers across 36 countries. There will be 93 world premieres, one international premiere, eight North American premieres, one U.S. premiere and six New York premieres.

Among the lineup, there are offerings from 43 first-time directors and 29 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects. For the first time, more than half of feature films in competition (68%) are directed by women, while 41% (45) of all feature films are directed by women. Additionally, 36% (39) of feature films are directed by Bipoc filmmakers, including two indigenous filmmakers.

Optimus Prime, once again voiced by fan-favorite Peter Cullen, is warned a darkness is coming in the new two-minute teaser for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – the seventh Transformers film. The teaser also serves up over-the-top action scenes and a warning that Prime’s never faced an enemy like the one he’s about to go up against.

His response? “Let them come.”

Anthony Ramos leads a cast that includes Dominique Fishback, Tobe Nwigwe, Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, and Michelle Yeoh. Liza Koshy, John Dimaggio, David Sobolov, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Pete Davidson, and Cristo Fernández also star.

The franchise launched in 2007 with Transformers followed by 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Transformers: Age of Extinction arrived in 2014 with Transformers: The Last Knight premiering in 2017.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a reboot of the franchise and will be set after the events in Bumblebee.

Paramount Pictures is transforming everyone’s Thursday into a Hype Train by dropping a Transformers: Rise of the Beasts trailer. The debut feature from the Brazil-us filmmaker has sold in Scandinavia (NonStop Entertainment), Japan (New Select), Poland (Monolith Films) and the Middle East (Front Row).

As previously announced, Momentum Pictures will release the feature theatrically and on demand in North America and the UK from November 4.

Exclusive: Blumhouse is coming on board Beth de Araújo’s SXSW debut Soft & Quiet, which is making its festival premiere in the narrative feature competition on Saturday.

CAA Media Finance and Blumhouse are selling the feature at SXSW.

The movie is writer-director Araújo’s feature length debut, and as part of the agreement, the film will be branded a Blumhouse feature.
