Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

Chicago – When it comes to bad movies there are three types … fun bad, memorably bad, and ordinary bad. “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” belongs in the latter category. It’s a clinking, clanking calamity that fails on almost every level, which is about par for the course when it comes to this series.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
Set in 1994, this story operates as something of a prequel to the Michael Bay-directed original movies. The plot, such as it is, follows a small group of Autobots who must keep a MacGuffin – called the Transwarp Key – out of the hands from the Terricon minions of Omicron, a planet eating robot out to destroy all life. In addition to a pared down group of Autobots led by Optimus Prime (voice of Peter Cullen), there’s now the Maximals. These are robots in animal form led by a gorilla named, wait for it, Optimus Prime-al (Ron Perlman...

The giant shape-shifting robots are back, in the seventh instalment in the live-action Transformers film series, this time without Michael Bay on board as director. The result is a significant improvement on the previous films, thanks to a script that includes an increased focus on character, dialogue and actual emotion, while still providing plenty of robo-carnage.
Technically both a sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee and a prequel to 2007’s Transformers, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set in 1994 and centres on three separate groups of shape-shifting robots. The Robots in Disguise return to theaters with a new mission the weekend of June 9, and analysts are already crunching numbers for the film’s summertime debut. According to Hollywood trend watchers and number hounds, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts could make $68M to $70M in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada.
That number is impressive after 2018’s Bumblebee opened to $21.6M in the domestic market, while Transformers: The Last Knight did $44.6M over a $68.4M Wednesday through Sunday window. If Transformers: Rise of the Beasts performs as expected, the action-packed installment inspired by a nostalgic property will be another win for the recovering box office. For those keeping track, Fast X is racing toward a $60M debut, with Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid swimming toward $110M. Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Acorss the Spider-Verse could web up $80M, setting the summer box office on fire.

Paramount Pictures is transforming everyone’s Thursday into a Hype Train by dropping a Transformers: Rise of the Beasts trailer. Inspired by the Beast Wars line of Transformers toys, the plot features giant robots that turn into mechanical animals instead of vehicles. Steven Caple Jr. directs from a screenplay by Joby Harold, Darnell Metayer, and Josh Peters. The upcoming film includes an ’80s backdrop and looks to follow the Bumblebee timeline.
In the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts teaser trailer, Optimus Prime encounters Optimus Primal in a forest. Exclusive: Rob Morgan (Smile) will produce and star in the crime film Dixie Crystal, based on the real-life FBI Operation of the same name, from brother filmmakers Conor and Jake Allyn (No Man’s Land).
The film from Riverside Entertainment and Stride Management centers on FBI special agent Jim Anderson (Morgan), who faces the overwhelming job of ridding methamphetamine from Harlan, Kentucky — a sprawling mountain ghetto policed by only a handful of lawmen. Over the course of the pic, Jim finds himself pitted against a former coal union boss turned drug kingpin. With a different skin color and a badge that means little in the hollers, he recruits local cop, Harlan native and recovering addict Cam (Jake Allyn) to assist. IFC Films has acquired North American rights to “God’s Time,” the kinetic debut feature from writer and director Daniel Antebi. “God’s Time” had its World Premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in the U.S. Narrative Competition, where it won a Best Performance Special Jury Mention for actress Liz Caribel.
At the festival, Paste praised it for conveying “a real sense of New York life,” while Cinemacy called it “Fast-paced and hip, fitting squarely into the growing category of films for the ‘Euphoria’ crowd.”
The movie centers around Dev and Luca, two best friends, who are also recovering addicts. The duo are secretly in love with fellow addict Regina. She spends every support group meeting sharing her wild fantasies about killing her evil ex-boyfriend. One day, her tone shifts, and Regina sounds serious. This sets Dev and Luca off on a 24-hour odyssey through pandemic-gripped New York City...

The social and ceremonial life of Indonesia’s Toraja region is the subject of a new audio-visual project from Dogmilk Films to be screened in Melbourne next month.
Directed and edited by Wahyu Al Mardhani and Chris Cochrance Friedrich, All Circles The Moon And Dirt Shines In The Sun will showcase more than 4,000 video clips simultaneously across four channels as part of an immersive experience designed to offer insight into the area’s public and private community events.
Located in the South Sulawesi province, Toraja is known for its distinctive funeral rites, in which the deceased are kept in the family house and cared for until the clan can afford a proper ceremonial burial, which can last for up to seven days.
Four years ago, a team from Dogmilk Films travelled to Makassar with the aim of documenting the rituals, only to discover there were other camera crews with similar interests.
