It was a Happy Days 50th anniversary reunion tonight at the Emmys, with former stars Ron Howard and Henry Winkler presenting the Emmy for Best Directing for a Comedy Series.
Howard and Winkler appeared on a re-creation of the iconic Arnold’s Drive-In set, when Howard (aka Richie Cunningham), noted that their intro did not include music, specifically the “Happy Days” theme song. “Candice Bergen had a theme song,” said Howard, to which Winkler replied, “Well of course she would get one.”
“Well, I have a solution, you could do it,” said Howard, encouraging Winkler to go play the jukebox as he did on the series. “First of all, I’m out of practice, it takes schooling” joked Winkler, who then did the iconic Fonzie move and got the Happy Days theme song to play. “Well done,” said Howard.

Jessica Walter worked. She worked in the literal sense, in that she was rarely without an acting job from the time her career began in the early Sixties, with a role as Julie Murano on the CBS daytime soap Love of Life, all the way through this past February, when her guest appearance on ABC’s American Housewife aired, just weeks before Walter died at the age of 80. Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who wrote “Splash,” “Parenthood,” and “City Slickers,” have been named the recipients of the Writers Guild of America West’s 2019 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
The duo will be honored at the WGA West’s Writers Guild Awards L.A. show on Feb. 17 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
“Starting in the 1980s with a string of critical and commercial hits, the imprint Ganz and Mandel have left on movies is profound,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Their scripts are always a balancing act; funny and moving, edgy but never offensive. They understand that in order for the jokes to work, the characters have to be compelling and relatable, but never lose sight of the fact that in a comedy, you need comedy.”
The duo received an Oscar nomination for “Splash” and won a National Society of Film Critics Award for best screenplay.

The loss of writer/producer/occasional actor Garry Marshall in 2016 was something felt by anyone who is or ever has been a fan of Classic TV. Think about it: He got his start as a writer for Tonight Starring Jack Parr, but made the shift to writing sitcoms like Make Room for Daddy, Gomer Pyle: Usmc, The Lucy Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Love, American Style. Then he began creating or co-creating his own shows, some of which didn’t work (Hey, Landlord; Me and the Chimp, Blansky’s Beauties, Joanie Loves Chachi), and a lot that did. In terms of the latter, there was Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, and, of course, The Odd Couple. In their time, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirely, and Mork & Mindy were huge, while The Odd Couple — based on Neil Simon’s play of the same name — struggled to...

Hollywood loves the spin-off. Ideally, it’s a way of turning one success into two or three (or four or more) successes. One of Hollywood's key figures passed away yesterday at the age of 81. His work in the past five years has consisted of a string of critically lambasted all star romcoms (Valentines Day, New Year's Eve, Mothers Day) and the day before he died one of the many actor he made famous (Scott Baio of Happy Days & Joanie Loves Chachi fame) embarrassed himself on national television at the Rnc. To put it bluntly, the last few years have not been kind but this is not the legacy that the beloved Garry Marshall deserves. We need to look a little further back. While he was never exactly a critic's darling - let's not rewrite history -- his work often resonated wildly with the public on screens both small and large. And that, my friends, is no small thing with or without a shelf of showbiz trophies.
