Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk about Bruce Willis, one of our great American movie stars. A man with perfect angles and a perfectly imperfect hairline. The man who spoke up for Seagram’s Golden when nobody else would. It’s wet and it’s dry. Play that harmonica, Bruno!
Our guest today is the great Jen Johans, host of the Watch With Jen podcast. Our B-Sides include In Country, Mortal Thoughts, Disney’s The Kid, and Richard Donner’s final film, 16 Blocks.
We discuss Willis’ early career, his propensity to try new things, and the sad and unfair dismissal of Hudson Hawk. We examine how his acting chops evolved throughout a very turbulent ‘90s decade, culminating in an...

Jim Carrey once called himself the “Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes” after his second straight victory with the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2000 (for “Man on the Moon” following “The Truman Show”). He could win with that group but somehow couldn’t impress Oscar voters. And he’s not the only actor in that situation. Our photo gallery features Carrey among the 20 actors who’ve never been nominated for an Oscar.
Even Academy Awards hosts such as Billy Crystal and Steve Martin haven’t been noticed by Oscar voters other than seeing them perform on the ceremony stage. They have both received critics awards and Golden Globe nominations in their long careers. Martin has at least received an honorary Oscar, but alas no individual nomination for either one throughout their careers.
Other Golden Globe film winners have included Richard Gere (“Chicago”) and Hugh Grant (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”). Our...

Oscar-nominated film director and producer Norman Jewison, who steered the 1967 racial drama “In the Heat of the Night” to a best picture Oscar and also helmed such popular films as “Moonstruck,” “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” and “The Thomas Crown Affair,” as well as film musicals “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” died Saturday at his Los Angeles residence. He was 97.
His film career began with fluffy Doris Day comedies like “The Thrill of It All.” But Jewison’s social conscience began to surface with “In the Heat of the Night” and, later, the labor union drama “F.I.S.T.” and other films focusing on racial tensions such as “A Soldier’s Story” and “The Landlord” (the latter of which he only produced), though he never abandoned comedies and romances.

Director Michael Cimino Didn't Want The Deer Hunter To Feel Like A Political Statement About Vietnam
In a 1977 New York Times article, director Michael Cimino was asked how big of a role the Vietnam war would play in "The Deer Hunter." He replied, "The war is really incidental to the development of the characters and their story. It's a part of their lives and just that, nothing more. I have no interest in making a 'Vietnam' film, no interest in making a direct political statement."
Released the same year, Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" contemplates the moral ramifications of war whereas "The Deer Hunter" considers how it affects the homefront. "The Deer Hunter" is the story of a group of friends — Michael, Nick, and Steven — that belong to a tight-knit Russian Orthodox community in rural Pennsylvania. With the exception of the infamous Russian roulette scenes, the film focuses on their struggle to assimilate into their community and reconcile their trauma after participating in the Vietnam war.

NewFest, New York’s LGBTQ+ film festival, kicks off tonight with one of the most prominent documentaries of the fall.
Mayor Pete, directed by Jesse Moss, goes behind the scenes and on the stump with Pete Buttigieg as he became the first openly gay major presidential candidate, vying for the Democratic nomination. Buttigieg’s campaign was unusual not only because of his gay identity, but for his résumé: his background in elective office was limited to serving as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana.
“One of the reasons I wanted to make the film is there seemed to be something almost Frank Capra-esque about this notion that a small-town mayor could run for president and be competitive,” Moss tells Deadline. “Of course, I wasn’t sure that was possible when we set out to make the film.

Why Driving Miss Daisy might just owe a drop of its success to a film called In Country...
Sometimes, it’s little quirks of fate that turn projects from small successes into a genuine phenomenon. Here's one we thought you might be interested in. Bruce Beresford’s 1989 comedy-drama, Driving Miss Daisy, would go on to be a big hit, inspire a stage production, and win four Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture. Yet originally, Warner Bros didn’t have major plans for the movie.
Instead, it was pinning hopes for a good Christmas on the Norman Jewison-directed drama In Country, starring Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd. The studio set a September 29th 1989 release date for the film, expecting it to play for several months as awards season took hold. These were days when a movie would get a bit more time to earn its keep,...

From Star Trek and Field Of Dreams to The Rocketeer and Krull: we salute the film scores of the late, great James Horner.
When composer James Horner died in a plane crash in June 2015, cinema lost one of its most profoundly emotional voices, and the final chapter on Horner's astonishing career has now closed with his last work: Antoine Fuqua's Western remake The Magnificent Seven. Horner actually wrote the score based on the script before the film even started production, such was his passion for it, and it's been posthumously completed by his longtime collaborator Simon Franglen.
To mark the occasion, here are the 25 most seminal scores from a lamented, legendary figure of film music.
1. Legends Of The Fall (1994)

Chicago – The legacy of country music singer Hank Williams is embraced in every lonesome twang you hear in any song. The actor Tom Hiddleston (“Thor”) transcends his Loki roots to embody the 1950s songster in a way that is otherworldly, working from the script and direction of Marc Abraham.
Hank Williams was a bright wattage bulb that burned like a thousand suns, and was extinguished instantly at the tender age of 29. The influence of his short time within the country music scene, from about 1946 through to his death in 1953, was through the music chart statistic that Williams had an astounding 35 singles reach the country and western Top Ten (five after his death). His signature style and easy-going hit making continues to be heard in the heart of C&W (and all pop) music, and he can easily qualify as one of the Olympus-like gods of that particular brand of musical faith.

In the woods of Salem, capital city of the the U.S. state of Oregon, a group of men spend the weekend reenacting the Vietnam War. This group comprises of American veterans from the wars of Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. Some members are still-serving soldiers who are in between overseas deployments and some are civilians who want to experience the war. The group even has a Vietnamese veteran from that ill-fated war.
Directors of In Country use this reenactment as an opportunity to delve into the American war culture and to explore the psyche of men who experience war
This is no trivial re-enactment. It is done with all the decorum of a war, with men donning the complete army uniform, lugging the heavy knapsacks, their cigarettes tucked under helmets and sealed to be protected from rain. They fire blanks from their guns and men get “killed”; “dead bodies” are...

This past weekend at the Camden International Film Festival, Mike Attie and Meghan O'Hara's pitch for their Vietnam War reenactor film "In Country," came out as the Points North Pitch winner. The pair's film was up against seven other projects, including Ben Niles' "Some Kind of Spark," which won Indiewire and Ciff's Project of the Week contest this September. After expanding the Pitch contest to documentary filmmakers from across the U.S. (previously, the Pitch was only open to projects from New England-based filmmakers), Points North Producer Sean Flynn said the number of applicants doubled. Attie, in fact, is from Seattle, and O'Hara is based in San Francisco. While there are quite a few other pitch contests (Toronto's Hot Docs Forum hosts a pitch contest; Britdoc and the Sundance Institute Documentary Program host the roaming issue doc pitch program Good Pitch), Camden's Points North Pitch Contest may...

Hollywood director and screenwriter who won an Oscar for Dog Day Afternoon
In Sunset Boulevard, William Holden's character remarks: "Audiences don't know somebody sits down and writes a picture. They think the actors make it up as they go along." Given the difficulties in quantifying their contributions, screenwriters seldom get the recognition they deserve. Frank Pierson, who has died aged 87, wrote the screenplays for 10 films but his reputation rests on Cat Ballou (1965), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Dog Day Afternoon (1975), all of which gained him Academy Award nominations, with the last of them winning the Oscar for best original screenplay.
Yet most of the plaudits for Dog Day Afternoon went to Sidney Lumet, the director, and Al Pacino, the star. Pierson, whose work had as much to do with structure and character as dialogue, shaped the script from a Life magazine article about a bungled bank robbery that took place...

Chicago – Gerard Butler is movie star good looking, that is very apparent when meeting him. What wasn’t expected was his keen insight, passion and perspective on taking on a challenge and playing a true-life Pennsylvania preacher, who ends up helping children in the most corrupted areas of the Southern Sudan in Africa, in “Machine Gun Preacher.”
Butler is portraying Sam Childers, an ex-con and blue collar hell raiser who found his purpose in preaching and outreach, almost in a he-was-meant-to-be-there way, to the children of war torn Southern Sudan. The story of the “Machine Gun Preacher” is one of making a life transition, with salvation and sacrifice.
HollywoodChicago.com got the opportunity to talk not only to Gerard Butler, but also his real-life counterpart Sam Childers. Their insights to this unusual life journey add to the flavor of the “Machine Gun” preacher’s life.

Chicago – Director Scott Teems has been working the film exhibition circuit hard for the past two years since releasing “That Evening Sun” in 2009. Featuring Hal Holbrook in one of his finest roles, the film has built an audience one city at a time.
The compelling story is about a farmer named Meecham (Holbrook) in the twilight of his life, whose son has placed him in an elder care facility. Determined to reclaim his land, Meecham escapes from the facility, only to find another family living on his farm. He finds out that his son has allowed this, not knowing that the new tenants include a man named Choat (Ray McKinnon), who Meecham despises. His run-ins with Choat comprise the rest of the narrative, with themes of aging, family, friendship, redemption and truth.

I figured I'd post this open thread for the season premiere of American Dad not just because I want fans to have a place to talk about the show but I'm wondering, well, if anyone even cares about it anymore.
I tried to get into the show but, beyond some funny lines here and there, I just don't find it that amusing. It seems rather forced and off-balance to me. Are you still watching it? It seems to be the Fox animated show that not many people talk about.

Bruce Willis is actually two people. Superman Bruce is the cocksure, single-minded hardass who plays high-ranking military officers, professional hitmen, and world-rescuing oil drillers; he ruined Die Hard 4. Everyman Bruce is the emotionally bruised anxiety case who plays divorced alcoholics, blue-collar joes, and former heroes gone to seed; for me, he made Die Hard 3 the last great '90s action film, pre-Matrix. Both men are featured prominently in Surrogates, a documentary about career schizophrenia which opens this Friday. Okay, Surrogates is really a sci-fi shoot-em-up. But we can agree that there's a clear divide running throughout Willis' career between the action-god star persona seen in movies like Armageddon, Hostage, and Hart's War, and the messy, emotionally traumatizing performances he gave in films like 12 Monkeys, Pulp Fiction, and In Country. Based on the trailer, it seems that Surrogates is intentionally addressing this contrast. I certainly wouldn't put it past director Jonathan Mostow,...

Yeah, we all love Jeff Bridges when he's rocking the evil shaved head in Iron Man 2 or reinventing the bathrobe as The Dude. But can those of you who love Jeff Bridges and harbor a crush on Maggie Gyllenhaal-- and that probably includes all of us-- handle the sight of him wooing Jake's older sister? This romantic pairing actually happens in Crazy Heart, an indie drama just picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight. According to Variety Bridges plays an aging country singer who gets a new lease on life through a relationship with reporter (Gyllenhaal). He's also got a mentor to deal with, played by Robert Duvall, and is a mentor himself to an up-and-comer played by Colin Farrell. Yes, Colin Farrell is apparently playing a country singer. It really says something that this isn't the strangest part of the story. Of course, Searchlight has just about flawless...

When Reba McEntire toured with Kelly Clarkson last year, she was reinvigorated by the energy and it has affected the way she is approaching the material for her next project.
Reba's next album finds her in a different mood than some of her previous projects.
Although looking back at Reba's career, she blazed onto the country scene in the '80s, it was in the '90s that Reba's music began to change. But it was last year when she sang "Because Of You" with duet partner, Clarkson that credited her with changing country music with a slight "pop" edge.
McEntire told USA Today that the songs on her new album are more hip, funky and sassy. She says they are uptempo and they've got attitude. The album has her teamed with producers, Tony Brown, who produced her hits, "Fancy" and "I'm A Survivor" and Mark Bright,...
