Morgan Travis' tale of Captain Blood stealing the Crown Jewels and being rewarded is genuine: on 9th May 1671 Irishman Thomas Blood, posing as a parson, inveigled his way into viewing the Jewels, having befriended Talbot Edwards, Keeper of the Jewels. With Edwards incapacitated Blood's gang flattened St Edward's Crown, sawed the Sceptre with the Cross in half, and hid the Sovereign's Orb down Blood's breeches. The men were arrested during the attempt, but Blood refused to answer anyone but King Charles II. His charm offensive succeeded and Blood received a pardon plus Irish lands worth £500 per annum by the monarch.
