Disney+ has set a premiere date for Rivals, the Jilly Cooper adaptation starring David Tennant, Aidan Turner, Katherine Parkinson, and Danny Dyer.

Lee Mason, Disney’s director of scripted content in Europe, announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival that the eight-part series will drop on October 18 in the UK. Rivals will stream on Hulu in the U.S.

It is part of Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles and is set against the backdrop of the excess and antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England.

The series chronicles the cutthroat world of independent television in 1986 and the long-standing rivalry of ex-Olympian, MP, and notorious womanizer Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and his neighbor Tony Baddingham (Tennant), controller of Corinium Television.

Starz released the teaser today for the deviously twisted coming-of-age story Sweetpea, which will premiere this October. Ella Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.

Ella Purnell, who also serves as executive producer, said, “I truly cannot wait for the world to meet Sweetpea! I’ve loved exploring this incredibly complex character, as well as working alongside our dynamic cast and powerhouses Ella Jones, Kristie Swain, and Patrick Walters.”

Family is the ultimate encapsulation of society. It offers us a taste of the whole world, but at a molecular level – and is very convenient if you want to destroy the world via your storytelling. The Greeks knew it with their tragedies, and we’re still using it to this day.

The tale of The Vourdalak is about how a monster can destroy their relatives from within, feeding one by one on those they love the most. In our case it’s a fatherly, patriarchal figure who has transformed into something inhuman… but the horrible threat can come from elsewhere in the family unit.

Stuff the British Stole, the popular Australian-Canadian documentary series exploring the controversy surrounding cultural objects purloined by British colonialists, is set to be reimagined as a big-budget scripted heist series. The new version is backed by Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia (The Twelve, Love Me) and Wooden Horse (The Clearing, Mother & Son).

The partners describe the series, which will run for six, one-hour episodes, as “a provocative and sharply observed deep dive into the complexity of history, and identity, in our modern world through an irreverent and wryly humorous lens.”

Exclusive: Stuff the British Stole, the Australian-Canadian doc series about the impact of British colonialism, is being remade as a six-part scripted heist caper.

Anchuli Felicia King, who wrote on HBO’s The Sympathizer and The Baby and Deadloch for Prime Video, is creating and writing the series, which is coming out of Australia and billed by producers as “an exploration of the the nuanced debate around repatriation through a sharply funny lens.”

Ben Chessell (The Great, Giri Haji, Doctor Who) is attached to direct and write episodes, with Kacie Anning and award-winning First Nations writer and playwright Dylan Van Den Berg also on the creative team.

Aussie indie Wooden Horse, which made Disney+ series The Clearing, is co-producing with Warner Bros International Television Production (Wbitvp) Australia, known for the likes of The Twelve, on which King was a writer, and Love Me.

The series is adapted from C.J. Skuse’s novel of the same name by writer and executive producer Kirstie Swain (“Pure”), and written by Kirstie Swain (“Run”) and Krissie Ducker (“Killing Eve”), alongside Laura Jayne Tunbridge (“Nights”) and Selina Lim (“Sex Education”). The series will be directed by Ella Jones (“The Baby”), who also serves as executive producer.

In the end, with Blake Shelton, it’s all about the voice … and without any need to punctuate that phrase with quote marks or italics or a capital T and V. The first and last reason he arrived on America’s doorstep was that baritone, which resonates with an authority that seems handed down from a different era of country music, no matter how contemporary the musical settings built up around it became. We’ve been hearing a lot about the Greek mythological character Medusa lately, and there’s not even a new Clash of the Titans movie on the way. There was a Medusa horror movie that recently got a sequel called Medusa’s Venom, there was a Brazilian production that Music Box Films brought to North America, and there was a Medusa-inspired film in the works at Fangoria Studios, a project we haven’t heard about since it was announced over a year ago. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Nicole Kassell, who an Emmy for her work directing episodes of HBO’s Watchmen series, will be directing a Medusa movie for Amazon Studios.

Medusa is getting a modern makeover.

Nicole Kassell, who an Emmy for her work directing episodes of HBO’s Watchmen, is set to direct Medusa, an action adventure project centered on the Greek mythological character that is in development at Amazon Studios.

Nicole Perlman, known for her Marvel Studios work, penned the script that reimagines what audiences may know about everybody’s favorite Gorgon, who has snakes for hair and whose stare turns ordinary people into stone.

Plot details are being kept behind the mirror but the fantasy story sees Medusa, after running afoul of the ancient gods, setting out on an epic quest to save the world.

Vinson Films’ Tripp Vinson and Tara Farney are producing alongside Kassell. Vinson Films, which was behind the cult horror movie Ready or Not and Netflix’s hit Murder Mystery, is prepping for the debut of the latter’s sequel March 31.

Perlman will executive produce.

The ceremony honoring the world’s top creators and entertainment marketers took place at the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura in Algarve, Portugal, where winners were announced across the worlds of TV, cinema, games and streaming. More than 70 countries participated in the competition (see the regional winners list here), with winners selected by a panel 450-plus international entertainment opinion leaders and industry experts. Deadline is the event’s media partner.

Berlin-based X Filme Creative Pool will adapt one of the most successful German-language podcasts, “Zeit Crime” (“Zeit Verbrechen”) into an anthology series for Paramount +.

Awarded the German Podcast Prize, “Zeit Crime” is based on the criminal investigations of Sabine Rückert and Andreas Sentker. According to producer Jorgo Narjes, it currently boasts 5 million streams per month and an average of 1.5 million listeners per episode, “most of them female and in their late twenties.” So far, the podcast consists of more than 100 episodes.

Filming started this month and will continue until the end of June 2023.

The show is helmed by four directors, making four separate 60-minute-long films, each one inspired by a specific story from the podcast. If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.

Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

The first annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, held on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 11, are honoring the best in children and teen entertainment on broadcast and streaming services.

The inaugural ceremony features JoJo Siwa as the host of the Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmy ceremony on Dec. 10 and “30 Rock” star Jack McBrayer as the host of the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards on Dec. 11.

Maya and the Three, Sneakerella and Netflix were among the big winners at The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards on Saturday.

Presented as the first half of a two-night event held at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, the Dec. 10 ceremony celebrated winners in more than 30 creative arts categories, from directing, writing and editing to stunt work, choreography and song spanning live action, animation, interactive, promotional, single camera and multicamera media.

Netflix’s Maya and the Three and Disney+’s Sneakerella walked away with the most honors, both taking home three awards. Another Disney+ title, The Quest, came in second with two wins. Netflix ultimately led wins by distribution, nabbing 13 total followed by Disney+ with 10 and Apple TV+ with two.

During the show, the late Gilbert Gottfried was remembered during the in-memoriam for Cyberchase.

Before a trailer, the very first glimpse at a new film or upcoming TV show is its poster. The lush artwork or posed character portrait immediately gives a taste of what’s to come, and teases plot elements that may not fully come into focus until audiences watch the finished product.

From spotting Ana de Armas’ transformation into Marilyn Monroe up-close for “Blonde” to visiting the desert dystopia of “Don’t Worry Darling,” film posters this year have caught the eyes of moviegoers on social media, at theaters, or anywhere they stake a claim in the wild. Even the hauntingly anonymous silhouette for “She Said” carries a dark weight of going on record for the #MeToo drama.

In television, there were the supercilious silhouettes of “Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire,” the mind-bending visuals of “Irma Vep” and “The Patient,” as well as the clean but effective dread evoked by “The Baby.

Mick Jagger, P.J. Harvey and “Heartstopper” casting director Daniel Edwards are among the nominees at this year’s Royal Television Society (Rts) Craft & Design Awards 2022.

Jagger was nominated alongside Daniel Pemberton for writing the opening music to “Slow Horses,” the Apple TV+ show which stars Gary Oldman, while Harvey was nominated in the same category alongside Tim Phillips for their work on Sharon Horgan’s “Bad Sisters.”

“Heartstopper” casting director Daniel Edwards was nominated for his work on the hit Netflix show.

The BBC garnered most noms with 35 nods, followed by Sky with 13 and ITV with 11 nominations.

The awards will take place in London.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Tuesday announced nominations for the first-ever Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, to be presented Dec. 10 and 11 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. These awards mark the first stand-alone expansion of the Emmys since 1979.

“Putting a spotlight on children’s & family programming after years of unparalleled growth in content quality and quantity in this space is an exciting moment for the television industry,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS, in a press statement. “These programs entertain, inform and educate family members of all ages, and NATAS is proud to mark this milestone event and give these creators the stage they deserve.”

Netflix leads the pack of nominated streamers and networks by a landslide, with a whopping 83 nominations that sees recognition for popular family offerings like Heartstopper and The Baby-Sitters Club.

Last year, HBO Max embraced the Halloween spirit with a horror hub that assembled frights for all ages. That entailed an interactive It-inspired trio of doors labeled “Not Scary,” “Scary,” and “Very Scary,” that featured revolving horror titles. This year, HBO Max is back with a brand new seasonal hub that comes with a different holiday-inspired interactive element.

HBO Max will launch its “House of Halloween” spotlight page on October 1, assembling all its seasonal appropriate films, specials, Halloween episodes, and more. As for the interactive element, “House of Halloween” will feature an interactive tarot card element to help fans pick their next title to stream. Fans can click on one of the tarot cards on screen, which will then lead to a recommended title based on the card.

“Rivals,” the steamy 1980s novel from “Queen of the Bonkbuster” Jilly Cooper is set to be adapted for streamer Disney+.

The eight-part series is set in affluent 1980s England where two powerful men and neigbors – Olympian turned politician Rupert Campbell-Black and television exec Tony Baddingham – have a longstanding rivalry that finally comes to a head.

“As tensions rise and rivalries deepen, there are spilled secrets, forged alliances, and snatched liaisons that draw wives, lovers, colleagues, friends, and families into their battle,” reads the longline.

Since 2017, voters have not had to limit their choices to just 10 shows. One of the greatest elements of Danny McBride’s already great hit HBO comedy “The Righteous Gemstones” is the music. The show, about a dysfunctional family of wealthy televangelists, uses original and licensed music to make everything feel real despite being an over-the-top satire, and set a particularly high bar in Season 1 with “Misbehavin,'” a hilarious take on early 60’s country music that arguably serves as they show’s unofficial leitmotif.

The show follows Natasha (Michelle de Swarte), a single women in her 30s who finds herself stuck with a murderous baby. Over the course of the eight-episode season, Natasha learned that the baby was born to Helen (Tanya Reynolds), a young women who left her husband for her lesbian lover only to find out she was expecting. She wanted an abortion but was instead kidnapped by her husband, who kept her from getting one. The mysterious Mrs. Eaves (Amira Ghazalla), we learn, was Helen's partner, Nour, and she blames herself for the baby and believes she's cursed it. Let's break down the show's ending.

Sky Studios has hired CBS Studios international co-pros chief Meghan Lyvers as it seeks to significantly scale up its original UK drama output.

Lyvers will become Director of Original Drama, UK & Ireland — a new role that will see her have oversight of all premium original dramas commissioned and produced at the Gangs of London and Chernobyl company, which is Sky’s original programming arm in Europe. She is set to join in late summer in the UK.

Lyvers team will include Gabriel Silver, who was upped to Director of Drama Commissioning last year and will continue to lead on commissioned Sky Original drama projects such as the upcoming The Lazarus Project and The Baby, and Preethi Mavahalli, who joined earlier this year from Mammoth Screen as Creative Director.

Exclusive: The Owen Wilson family secret superhero comedy, Secret Headquarters, will debut exclusively on Paramount+ this August in the U.S. and Canada, Deadline has learned. The Jerry Bruckheimer produced movie will also debut in select international territories where the streaming service is available.

“We have seen tremendous success with our high-quality kids and family content, and are excited to add this special superhero movie to our growing slate of Paramount+ original films,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer, Paramount Streaming. “Secret Headquarters is the perfect action-packed summer film for the whole family, making it a perfect fit for Paramount+ and our mountain of entertainment geared toward the whole household.”

The pic most recently had a theatrical release date of Aug. 5 and leaves behind Sony’s Brad Pitt action movie Bullet Train, Universal’s Jo Koy family comedy Easter Sunday and A24’s horror comedy Bodies, Bodies, Bodies on that release date.

The “She-Ra” live-action series in development at Amazon has brought on Nicole Kassell to direct, Variety has learned exclusively.

Variety previously reported that the show was in early development at the streamer in September 2021. Kassell will direct and executive produce the pilot episode should it go forward. No writer is currently attached.

Kassell previously directed and executive produced multiple episodes of the critically-acclaimed HBO series “Watchmen,” which earned her an Emmy nomination and a DGA Award. She has also directed episodes of shows like “Westworld,” “The Leftovers,” “The Americans,” and “Castle Rock.” She most recently directed the pilot of the HBO series “The Baby.” She made her feature directorial debut in 2004 with “The Woodsman,” which screened in competition at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

Michelle de Swarte, the star of HBO's new horror comedy "The Baby," has a Zoom call to thank for her new role. The actor had previously worked primarily as a stand-up comic, and during Covid-19 lockdowns, she couldn't perform in comedy clubs. She tells Popsugar that instead, she started to do corporate gigs, where she would perform her jokes via the video-conferencing software.

"Not for the faint-hearted," de Swarte jokes of the experience. One of the biggest problems is that on Zoom, the audience is muted, so you can't hear laughs. People might write comments in the chat, but de Swarte warns that the delay makes them useless.
