Writer and executive producer Ed Solomon, whose extensive list of credits includes the “Men in Black” and “Bill & Ted” film series, has signed with London and L.A.-based management and production company 42.

Solomon’s upcoming projects include Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers,” set to star Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel and James Corden and about the estranged children of a once-famous artist who hire a forger to complete his unfinished works so they can be discovered and sold after his death. Production is due to start in early 2025. Solomon is also developing “The Spot,” a psychological thriller which he created and is executive producing. Kate Winslet is attached to lead the A24 series, about a successful surgeon and her school teacher husband who suspect she might be responsible for a child’s hit-and-run death. The Jackal is targeting NBC: The broadcast network will air the first episode of the Peacock series The Day of the Jackal on Monday, Dec. 30, at 10/9c.

The Golden Globe Award-nominated drama stars fellow nominee Eddie Redmayne as the Jackal, “an unrivaled and highly elusive lone assassin [who] makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee,” reads the official synopsis. “But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer (No Time to Die’s Lashana Lynch) who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.

When The Day of the Jackal executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant took on a TV remake of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 historical novel, they had a dilemma.

Should they kill off the chameleon assassin played by Eddie Redmayne, as happened in the original 1973 movie? Or have him survive for a second season and another possible multiseason franchise?

As viewers saw during the Sky and Peacock series’ riveting two-episode finale (released on Thursday night), the Jackal — in a shock twist — survives the 10-episode first season, and it’s Bianca Pullman, Lashana Lynch’s MI6 agent who pursued Redmayne’s Jackal across Europe, who meets a grisly death in the end.

Exclusive: Julian Fellowes is going from crimes of high society to real crimes. The Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age creator is set to write and executive produce a TV adaptation of Swiss-American author Donna Leon’s contemporary Detective Brunetti book series, which is in development at 20th Television.

The project was originated and set up at the studio by Fellowes’ longtime friend and mentor, producer Ileen Maisel who died in February at the age of 68. She had been in the 20th Television fold since 2018 when she signed a first-look deal with its former division Fox21.

Maisel will be credited as an executive producer on the Brunetti series alongside writer Fellowes, Gesine Lubben, Pk Fellowes and Lawrence Elman. Author Leon will co-executive produce. Playwright Felix Legge will serve as co-writer and producer.

Break out the bubbly: CNN has officially confirmed that Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will return as co-hosts of the network’s New Year’s Eve Live, which begins airing at 8 pm Et on Tuesday, Dec. 31, from New York City’s Times Square.

Exclusive: Joanne Froggatt, best known for starring in the long-running ITV/PBS period drama Downton Abbey, has signed on to join Guy Ritchie’s untitled crime series starring Tom Hardy (Venom: The Last Dance) for Paramount+ with Showtime.

Froggatt joins as a series regular alongside Mandeep Dhillon (CSI: Vegas) and Jasmine Jobson (Top Boy).

Production on the global crime series, previously known as The Associate (w/t), is currently underway in London. The show’s leads are Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren. Hardy stars as Harry Da Souza, the professional conciliator of the fictional Harrigan Irish crime family, Brosnan will play Conrad Harrigan, the Harrigan family head, and Mirren is Maeve Harrigan, Conrad’s wife, and the Harrigan family matriarch.

Froggatt will play Jan Da Souza, Harry’s wife. Dhillon will play Seraphina, Conrad’s daughter. Jobson has the role of Zosia, who works for Harry and is one of his closest associates.

“The Day of the Jackal” producer Gareth Neame has admitted he initially balked at making the Eddie Redmayne reboot, which was released last month, because he was such a fan of the 1973 movie starring Edward Fox.

The film is itself based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel. The new series, which also stars Lashana Lynch, began broadcasting on Sky in the U.K. and Peacock in the U.S. last month. It has already been renewed for a second season.

Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame is lauding Downton Abbey as a landmark piece of British television.

The executive spoke at Content London on Thursday alongside a panel of Universal International Studio bosses Beatrice Springborn and Margaret Schatzel, as well as Nigel Marchant, managing director at Carnival Films, to discuss their latest major shows and the direction they’re heading in after NBCUniversal’s acquisition of the production company in 2008.

Neame, Springborn, Schatzel and Marchant spoke extensively about the success of Sky and Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal, the upcoming Colin Firth-led show Lockerbie and Sarah Snook’s All Her Fault.

New Empire Pictures will forge a slate of TV shows and movies that it said will “merge strategic finance with creative excellence and precisely targeted sales and distribution strategies.”

The company launches with the support of Edoardo Bussi of Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment as Strategic Sales Consultant.

Focus Features has acquired worldwide distribution rights, excluding Poland, Greece, and France, to “Hot Spot,” a near-future thriller about artificial intelligence from director Agnieszka Smoczyńska.

The film, which wrapped production in Greece on Nov. 22, marks Smoczyńska’s second collaboration with the studio following “The Silent Twins.”

Set in a society ruled by sentient AI, the film follows a private investigator who stumbles upon a rebel group capable of undermining the digital overlord while investigating a murder case. BAFTA nominee Noomi Rapace stars alongside Andrzej Konopka and Reika Kirishima, working from an original script by Smoczyńska’s frequent collaborator Robert Bolesto.

The Peacock and Sky dramatic series “The Day of the Jackal” was renewed for a second season, the streamer and broadcaster announced Thursday.

The show’s success was “unusually strong” Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame told TheWrap this month. The series is part of Neame’s strategic plan that includes launching series that are “expressly British but will have global appeal.” The formula worked when he sold “Downton Abbey” to NBCUniversal in 2008, though he admitted he “could not have anticipated” how successful that series would ultimately become.

Sky and Peacock announced the series was in production in 2023. Eddie Redmayne produced and starred in the first season. The show is based on the Frederick Forsyth thriller and subsequent award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name.

“Yellowstone” is back.

Taylor Sheridan’s phenomenally popular series, the most-watched show currently airing on television, returns on Sunday, Nov. 10. The new batch of episodes (six in total) serve as the second half of the show’s fifth season, which began way back in November 2022. Since then, the show has endured a very public feud with its star Kevin Costner, two strikes that shutdown Hollywood and a considerable amount of handwringing about what direction the series will ultimately take.

And while it appears that the mainline series is coming to an end, although that “final season” bit has been left out of the marketing materials for the second half of season 5 (so far), there will still be plenty to come from Sheridan’s considerable “Yellowstone” universe. These plans include a whole suite of “Yellowstone” spinoffs, which are somewhat confusing and difficult to parse through. But that’s why we’re here.

During an interview on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Whoopi Goldberg discussed her upcoming film “Sister Act 3” and how the team needed to adjust their plans following the death of her co-star Maggie Smith.

“We’re having to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know,” Goldberg said. “And so, we will get it done. We will get it done. It’s a shift.”

Carnival bosses Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant had toyed with the idea of remaking Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 historical novel about the fictional assassination of Charles de Gaulle for a few years but had always concluded that the 1973 movie version starring Edward Fox “cannot be bettered so why would you want to remake it,” according to Neame.

“We revere the film enormously but kept talking about [a remake],” he added. “It was such an intriguing, interesting idea and we couldn’t quite let it go.”

They’ve fashioned a screenplay that’s got Downton Abbey-esque material in its sights by the sounds of it. British cinema has had a go at this before, with Gary Sinyor’s Stiff Upper Lips back in 1997. Fackham Hall, from the title alone, sounds like a very different beast.

The cast features Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Thomasin McKenzie, Emma Laird and Katherine Waterston.

The upcoming third Downton Abbey film will pay tribute to Dame Maggie Smith, who portrayed Violet Crawley throughout the popular television series and films. Dame Maggie, who passed away in 2024 at age 89, had already completed filming her scenes prior to her death.

Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert Crawley, recently discussed details about the upcoming film. He said the movie will serve as a “great lasting tribute” to Dame Maggie and her legacy within the Downton Abbey franchise. According to Bonneville, wrapping up all the character storylines in this final installment will give fans a “proper” conclusion.

The film is set to resume at Downton Abbey and will focus on saying goodbye to all the beloved characters, including a special farewell for Dame Maggie’s Violet Crawley. Producer Gareth Neame echoed that the film aims to honor one of its most important stars. Fellow producer Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay to provide closure for the fans.

Dan Stevens, who memorably starred in Adam Wingard’s thriller The Guest, is reuniting with the filmmaker for his newest action thriller, Onslaught.

Adria Arjona is starring in the feature which is being made by A24 as well as Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Shooting begins November in New Mexico.

The feature is already a reteaming of the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two wrote the cult hits You’re Next and Guest. The latter was a key Hollywood step for Stevens, who at that point was known mainly for his work in the popular British series Downton Abbey.

Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller.

In a new interview, he confirmed that it’s “probably” the final film in the franchise.

“We finished a third — and I think probably final — Downton Abbey film this summer, which will come out next September and that is a wonderful sort of closing off of all the stories, so it’s a proper film for the fans,” Hugh told The Chris Evans Breakfast Show in a new interview. News that this film will be the final one isn’t exactly surprising information, as it confirms what another cast member previously shared.

He did give a few details, including how they’ll be saying goodbye to the late Dame Maggie Smith.

His career, his real identity, and his mission are pitted against his heart—hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.

NBCUniversal International has posted a record pre-tax loss following a write down of £99,297,000 ($130 million), its latest accounts show.

The accounts, which were filed at U.K. business registrar Companies House last week and cover the 12 month period up to Dec. 31, 2023, were accompanied by a report that said: “Following an assessment of the company’s investments, the varying value was reduced resulting in an impairment of £99,297,000 in 2023.”

U.K.-based entity NBCUniversal International Limited, which is a U.K. subsidiary of NBCUniversal, did not specify which investments it had written down, although a source said the writer down was a “non-cash” impairment. A spokesperson for NBCU also declined to comment.

The Channel 5 show from All Creatures Great and Small producer Playground chronicles the loves and fortunes of the working-class Hardacre family as they move from a grimy fish dock to a vast country estate in 1890s Yorkshire, England. The show has sold to BritBox in Australia, Tvnz in New Zealand, TV4 Sweden, MTV in Finland, Dr in Denmark, RTÉ in Ireland, BBC First in Benelux and, as previously announced, Movistar Plus+ in Spain. Anyone feeling ‘sus’ about the upcoming Among Us series adaptation can rest assured the show will feature all of the game’s fun and gore.

That’s according to Owen Dennis, who is creating and exec producing the popular mobile game’s transfer to TV screens. He lifted the lid on the project in an interview ahead of his session at Italy’s Mia Market today. Deadline is moderating the talk, which takes place at the Cinema Barberini in Rome.

Per the logline, the series is based on the game’s premise: “Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.”
