Why ‘Day of the Jackal’ Season Finale Delivered a Twist Ending for Eddie Redmayne’s Hitman Character
[This story contains major spoilers from the Day of the Jackal season finale.]
When The Day of the Jackal executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant took on a TV remake of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 historical novel, they had a dilemma.
Should they kill off the chameleon assassin played by Eddie Redmayne, as happened in the original 1973 movie? Or have him survive for a second season and another possible multiseason franchise?
As viewers saw during the Sky and Peacock series’ riveting two-episode finale (released on Thursday night), the Jackal — in a shock twist — survives the 10-episode first season, and it’s Bianca Pullman, Lashana Lynch’s MI6 agent who pursued Redmayne’s Jackal across Europe, who meets a grisly death in the end.
Of course, that’s a flip ending to Fred Zinnemann’s 1973 film adaptation where Lebel, the reluctant detective played by Michael Lonsdale, ultimately kills the Jackal just as the hired killer reloads his rifle for another shot. But saying goodbye...

“The Day of the Jackal” producer Gareth Neame has admitted he initially balked at making the Eddie Redmayne reboot, which was released last month, because he was such a fan of the 1973 movie starring Edward Fox.
The film is itself based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel. The new series, which also stars Lashana Lynch, began broadcasting on Sky in the U.K. and Peacock in the U.S. last month. It has already been renewed for a second season.
“It came up in a creative meeting before the pandemic, and I just immediately [said] ‘No, we’re not doing that. Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame is lauding Downton Abbey as a landmark piece of British television.
The executive spoke at Content London on Thursday alongside a panel of Universal International Studio bosses Beatrice Springborn and Margaret Schatzel, as well as Nigel Marchant, managing director at Carnival Films, to discuss their latest major shows and the direction they’re heading in after NBCUniversal’s acquisition of the production company in 2008.
Neame, Springborn, Schatzel and Marchant spoke extensively about the success of Sky and Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal, the upcoming Colin Firth-led show Lockerbie and Sarah Snook’s All Her Fault.
But first, the four reflected on the example set by the English period drama Downton Abbey starring Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Dan Stevens.

What do you mean TV insults are not the reason for the season? Family gatherings throughout the holidays are not always bastions of constructive thought and civilized conversation!
Well, maybe they are for some. But where is the fun in that? If you’re anything like me, you have a relatively dysfunctional family that hurls as many insults as compliments.
In that situation, it pays to be on your toes and keep your wits about you.
(Fox)
While this list is all about defending oneself from familial onslaughts, it’s not about making enemies of your own blood. Well, maybe the in-laws, but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles all too often.
Try to avoid creating a massive rift in the family by slinging an ill-timed Family Guy joke in front of grandma.
Of course, some of the best insults come from the raunchiest shows and characters.

There are only a few days left in November, and we all know what that means. Netflix is about to lose some good movies! If you're looking for what to watch on Netflix, this is the list for you.
With the month winding down, we picked the three best movies leaving Netflix in November 2024. We highly recommend watching these movies before they leave in a few days.
At the end of every month, Netflix usually loses the streaming rights to at least a handful of licensed movies. Some of these movies are the most popular movies on Netflix, but more often than not, it's older films.
Let's get the list started with Two Weeks Notice -- which you don't have to watch these movies; it's more like five days notice -- starring Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant!

The Peacock and Sky dramatic series “The Day of the Jackal” was renewed for a second season, the streamer and broadcaster announced Thursday.
The show’s success was “unusually strong” Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame told TheWrap this month. The series is part of Neame’s strategic plan that includes launching series that are “expressly British but will have global appeal.” The formula worked when he sold “Downton Abbey” to NBCUniversal in 2008, though he admitted he “could not have anticipated” how successful that series would ultimately become.
Sky and Peacock announced the series was in production in 2023. Eddie Redmayne produced and starred in the first season. The show is based on the Frederick Forsyth thriller and subsequent award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name.

Gareth Neame, whose Carnival Films shepherded “Downton Abbey” to international success, “could not have anticipated” that the British period drama would not only become a worldwide hit, but launch a successful film franchise, with a third film due September 2025.
But Carnival’s success isn’t limited to the moonshot of “Downton”: The British powerhouse, which sold to NBCUniversal in 2008, just launched “The Day of the Jackal” with Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch for Sky/Peacock and has the upcoming dramas “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” starring Colin Firth, and the hotly anticipated “All Her Fault,” Sarah Snook’s first series since “Succession” wrapped.
Neame talked to TheWrap about how his series’ successes have changed the landscape for other U.K.-based productions and how Carnival still feels like a “boutique” studio despite being part of one of the biggest media corporations on the planet.

When it comes to TV dream homes, it’s easy to get envious of the stunning apartments, houses, and even mansions characters call home. But while these settings may seem like the epitome of luxury, we’re often left wondering how the characters can afford them. The answer typically requires us to suspend disbelief for the sake of the plot. So let’s ask the next logical question: Could the actors who lived in these iconic spaces actually afford them in real life?
From the Peaky Blinders mansion to the chic penthouse in Gossip Girl, we’re taking a closer look at five of the most famous TV residences to see if the actors’ net worths would realistically align with the high cost of living in these dream homes.

“Yellowstone” is back.
Taylor Sheridan’s phenomenally popular series, the most-watched show currently airing on television, returns on Sunday, Nov. 10. The new batch of episodes (six in total) serve as the second half of the show’s fifth season, which began way back in November 2022. Since then, the show has endured a very public feud with its star Kevin Costner, two strikes that shutdown Hollywood and a considerable amount of handwringing about what direction the series will ultimately take.
And while it appears that the mainline series is coming to an end, although that “final season” bit has been left out of the marketing materials for the second half of season 5 (so far), there will still be plenty to come from Sheridan’s considerable “Yellowstone” universe. These plans include a whole suite of “Yellowstone” spinoffs, which are somewhat confusing and difficult to parse through. But that’s why we’re here.

During an interview on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Whoopi Goldberg discussed her upcoming film “Sister Act 3” and how the team needed to adjust their plans following the death of her co-star Maggie Smith.
“We’re having to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know,” Goldberg said. “And so, we will get it done. We will get it done. It’s a shift.”
Goldberg and Smith worked together on the original “Sister Act” film in 1992 and then again in 1993 for its sequel, “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.” The story follows Deloris Van Cartier (Goldberg), who ends up in a California convent as part of a witness protection program. Smith plays the Mother Superior at the convent. The original movie made $231 million at the box office against a $31 million budget. The second movie included rising stars like Lauryn Hill and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

It was only when the team at Carnival Films decided they would fast forward The Day of the Jackal to the present day that things started getting interesting.
Carnival bosses Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant had toyed with the idea of remaking Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 historical novel about the fictional assassination of Charles de Gaulle for a few years but had always concluded that the 1973 movie version starring Edward Fox “cannot be bettered so why would you want to remake it,” according to Neame.
“We revere the film enormously but kept talking about [a remake],” he added. “It was such an intriguing, interesting idea and we couldn’t quite let it go.”
So in the midst of the pandemic, Neame and Marchant decided they would instil two obvious points of difference by making The Day of the Jackal into a 10-episode series and setting it in a 21st century milieu, with no...

Hugh Bonneville has said making ‘Paddington in Peru’ “felt very different” thanks to the new director Dougal Wilson. The 53-year-old filmmaker took over the franchise from Paul King for the upcoming movie, and while the experience of making a new ‘Paddington’ film was not the same as before due to the new director, the ‘Downton Abbey’ star, 60, insisted Wilson was able to incorporate some “gloriously fresh” ideas into the series while remaining faithful to what had come before . During an interview with Digital Spy, Bonneville said: “It felt very different, particularly with Dougal's nerves bless him because he said, 'How am I ever going to match what Paul created', but he has.“He's not only stepped into those very big shoes but he's filled them beautifully and added his own flavours and tone. Eva Longoria has proved she could rule Hollywood even without needing a script. The multitasker actress who somehow manages to become a glam icon while stealing the spotlight rose to fame as the glamorous and fiery Gabrielle Solis on the hit TV show Desperate Housewives. Her role catapulted her into stardom, making her a household name and one of the most recognizable Latinas in Hollywood. Before performing in Desperate Housewives, the actress starred in more minor roles on shows like The Young and the Restless. Although her TV magic started to fizzle a bit after Desperate Housewives was wrapped in 2012, she starred alongside Jack Whitehall in a 2017 miniseries, Decline and Fall.

Downton Abbey is getting something of a send-up, as filming on Fackham Hall gets underway in the north of England. More here.
Filming is now underway on a new British comedy by the name of Fackham Hall, which is shooting in the north of England. Filming locations are set to include Leeds and Liverpool for the movie, which is a send-up of period dramas.
Behind the camera, the feature marks the movie screenwriting debut of Jimmy Carr, who has written the script with the Dawson brothers and Patrick Carr. They’ve fashioned a screenplay that’s got Downton Abbey-esque material in its sights by the sounds of it. British cinema has had a go at this before, with Gary Sinyor’s Stiff Upper Lips back in 1997. Fackham Hall, from the title alone, sounds like a very different beast.
The cast features Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Thomasin McKenzie, Emma Laird and Katherine Waterston.

Dan Stevens, who memorably starred in Adam Wingard’s thriller The Guest, is reuniting with the filmmaker for his newest action thriller, Onslaught.
Adria Arjona is starring in the feature which is being made by A24 as well as Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Shooting begins November in New Mexico.
The feature is already a reteaming of the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two wrote the cult hits You’re Next and Guest. The latter was a key Hollywood step for Stevens, who at that point was known mainly for his work in the popular British series Downton Abbey.

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville just confirmed some news that we already suspected.
If you don’t know, the 60-year-old actor will be back for the third film in the franchise, which will be released in September, 2025.

In a new interview, he confirmed that it’s “probably” the final film in the franchise.
“We finished a third — and I think probably final — Downton Abbey film this summer, which will come out next September and that is a wonderful sort of closing off of all the stories, so it’s a proper film for the fans,” Hugh told The Chris Evans Breakfast Show in a new interview. News that this film will be the final one isn’t exactly surprising information, as it confirms what another cast member previously shared.
He did give a few details, including how they’ll be saying goodbye to the late Dame Maggie Smith.

Four top films this weekend are indies – five including The Substance at no. 11, as the specialty market roars back to life. No. 3 at the domestic box office is a great story, Conclave from Focus Features, the studio behind the Downtown Abbey films. excels at drawing still elusive but key older demos to theaters and broadening out from there as it did most recently with Oscar-winning The Holdovers.
The Vatican thriller by Edward Berger (whose All Quiet On The Western Front took the Best International Feature Oscar in 2023) and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini opened to a sweet $6.5 million at about 1,750 theaters. The kicker is that some 77% of the audience is over 35 with the biggest chunk (44%) being 55+, a rare feat.
The title refers to the ancient tradition that sees Cardinals from across the globe gather sequestered behind Vatican walls to elect a new Pope when the previous Eminence expires.

Tubi and the BBC have confirmed the Season 2 cast for the teen dramedy Boarders, which is on track for a 2025 release (Stateside on Tubi).
Created by Daniel Lawrence Taylor, who co-stars as Gus, Boarders follows five talented, Black, inner-city teens transported to “an alien world” — a British boarding school — after gaining scholarships to the prestigious St. Gilbert’s. They then set out to make the most out of the opportunity, despite their places only being offered as a poorly-disguised PR exercise to improve the reputation of the school.

Anyone feeling ‘sus’ about the upcoming Among Us series adaptation can rest assured the show will feature all of the game’s fun and gore.
That’s according to Owen Dennis, who is creating and exec producing the popular mobile game’s transfer to TV screens. He lifted the lid on the project in an interview ahead of his session at Italy’s Mia Market today. Deadline is moderating the talk, which takes place at the Cinema Barberini in Rome.
Per the logline, the series is based on the game’s premise: “Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.”
A splashy cast includes Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets), Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is The New Black), Randall Park, Ashley Johnson, Yvette Nicole Brown and Elijah Wood.
