“It shows you are about to go into a very interesting world,” states Holly Amber Church about the theme she wrote for “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.” For our recent webhcat she continues, “It’s mysterious, it’s thrilling, it’s scary and it’s beautiful all at the same time.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The Netflix anthology series comprises eight episodes, each telling a different horror story. The collection of stories were curated by del Toro, with two being works he had written. The Oscar-winning director of “The Shape of Water” (2017) also handpicked the eight directors for the series. All the stories are dark and touch on various moral themes. Church explains, “Guillermo brought all these amazing directors and writers and actors. Every episode is so different, but they are all so fantastic. When the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) announced that they were going on strike after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to offer an adequate deal during contract negotiations, there were many who didn't understand why actors were arguing for better pay.
It might as well be common knowledge now that folks like Dwayne Johnson are paid millions upon millions of dollars per picture, so being a working actor must mean that their bank accounts are all sitting pretty, right? Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. While, yes, there are certainly high-profile celebrity A-listers bringing home the big bucks, those performers are in the vast minority. Even Academy Award-winner Ke Huy Quan lost his health insurance after filming "Everything Everywhere All At Once" because he wasn't getting enough work to meet the SAG minimum requirements.

Kumail Nanjiani was just Emmy nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for his searing dramatic performance in the Hulu limited series “Welcome to Chippendales.” But the news came at a peculiar time, as the Emmy nods were announced the day before SAG-AFTRA went on strike, joining WGA members on the picket line.
“I was extremely surprised,” Nanjiani told Variety that morning, during those last moments before SAG-AFTRA members were no longer able to talk to press about their projects. “And also thrilled because my co-stars Juliette Lewis and Annaleigh Ashford and Murray Bartlett were recognized. And our costume designers. So, it’s been this pretty good morning … on the eve of a historic strike.”
Nanjiani spoke to the Variety Awards Circuit podcast about his nomination, what convinced him to do “Welcome to Chippendales” and his sheer ubiquity on the screen. But first, on the Awards Circuit Roundtable,...

Two weeks ago, we heard that Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins, has racked up distribution deals with multiple companies around the world. Now Deadline has revealed the names of two actors who have joined previously announced leads Nicolas Cage (Prisoners of the Ghostland) and Maika Monroe (It Follows) in the cast: they are Alicia Witt (Urban Legend) and Blair Underwood (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). Details on the characters Witt and Underwood are playing in the movie have not been shared.
The story Perkins wrote for Longlegs is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Monroe is taking on the role of FBI Agent Lee Harker, a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns,...

It’s that time of year again, when it’s fun to give a scare, or even get a scare. Many TV programs offer up a special Halloween episode, some with a light tone and others adding a little mystery, but some TV shows are spooky year round.
People have always been fascinated with the unknown, and “The Twilight Zone” was one of the first series to successfully offer up episode after episode of bizarre stories. In the 1960s, sitcoms like “Bewitched,” “The Addams Family” and “The Munsters” offered a comic take on movie monsters and the occult, while also giving lessons on acceptance. In the 1990s, “The X-Files” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” became huge hits, developing cult followings and leading to the popularity of series featuring supernatural forces. Allison Tolman and Nick Frost have been cast in Season 2 of “Why Women Kill” at CBS All Access.
The second season of the dark comedy anthology series is set in 1949. It will explore what it means to be beautiful, the hidden truth behind the facades people present to the world, the effects of being ignored and overlooked by society, and finally, the lengths one woman will go in order to finally belong.
Tolman will play Alma, a timid and awkward housewife, who remains optimistic in the face of the world’s cruelty. Alma yearns for a spot in the local garden club and to see her ungainly daughter married, but her life is disrupted once she learns of her husband’s secret hobby.
Frost will play Bertram, Alma’s beloved husband who spends his days as a veterinarian putting sick and injured animals out of their misery. Always kind and good-humored,...

In the last half decade, D.J. MacHale has noticed a significant uptick in interest in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the Nickelodeon anthology series he co-created nearly 30 years ago. Though he spent much of his career as a television writer, director, and producer, he’s had a successful second act as an author of sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural novels. When fans of his novels put it together that he also produced all 91 episodes of the original run of the Nickelodeon classic, he started receiving an outpour of appreciation.
“Suddenly this wave of social media came to me about Are You Afraid of the Dark?,” MacHale told Den of Geek. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t speak to someone in some way, shape or form about [the show].”
Are You Afraid of the Dark? premiered on Nickelodeon on Oct. 25, 1991. Each episode started with a member of “The Midnight Society,...

When A Chinese Ghost Story premiered in 1987, it was already part of a unique category – the fusion of horror, comedy, and Kung Fu. Asian horror films are known as jiangshi, which is the name of a specific spooky hopping ghost found in Chinese folklore that proliferates these films.
Part zombie, part vampire, jiangshi are corpses that are usually reanimated by demons or Daoist sorcerers. They hop along mindlessly with their arms outstretched like sleepwalkers, and feed on the life essence – or qi – of the living. Often a jiangshi is blind but can smell breath. This makes for great comic hijinks as hapless characters struggle to hold their breath while gruesome jiangshi shove their rotting noses close to their mouths trying to pick up the scent.
Comedy is a common horror film device. It releases tension and leaves the audience unguarded for the next jump scare. The addition of Kung Fu...

Indian composer Atif Afzal is set to make music for a BBC UK project. He is excited about his new venture because it gives him scope to explore authentic Australian aboriginal sounds.
Afzal has earlier worked on the popular American action series "NCIS: Los Angeles" and the fantasy horror series "The Twilight Zone: Season 2", besides the German film "Gift". He has also worked on the Hindi films "Prague" and "Monsoon Shootout", besides the Marathi film "Pune 52".
"After my world music work for 'The Twilight Zone' in the US, I was approached for this BBC project. World music requirements are on the surge, with top television networks such as BBC and CBS demanding this. They are open to my music techniques and give me a lot of freedom to express," he said.
On his new assignment, he said, "This series will air on BBC UK. I am working with Lucas Friedmann on this project.

Former top CBS marketing executives Garen van de Beek and Lori Shefa have reteamed to open Rm 15, a boutique entertainment marketing agency. Named after the office suite they shared at CBS’ TV City, the agency will focus on producing creative assets to launch and grow new and returning television and streaming content, and marketing and branding for companies outside of the entertainment sector.
“Lori and I can offer something many other agencies can’t — we know exactly what it takes to launch hit shows because we’ve been on the inside and have a track record of unparalleled success to back it up,” said van de Beek.
Added Shefa, “It’s what we do! We launch hit shows. We are firm believers in the power of great creative—the kind that makes you feel something. Powerful creative, in partnership with the right strategy, can move mountains.”

The X-Files has always been a cartoon at heart. Dana Scully’s hair has always been a little too red. Fox “Spooky” Mulder’s unimaginative suit and tie was a caricature of federal officer wear. It’s fitting that Fox is developing an animated comedy spinoff of The X-Files which will be executive produced by the series creator Chris Carter, according to Variety. The spinoff will be called The X-Files: Albuquerque.
Fox hasn’t quite committed to the script or presentation yet. The spinoff will not revolve around the characters David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson brought to life. It will revolve around an office of misfit agents who take on the cases the bureau’s X-Files consider too ridiculous to bother with. They take the castoffs, the ones that would only fit into B movies.
The pilot will be written by Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko, who wrote Paradise Pd for Netflix.

Egregiously snubbed at last year’s Emmys as the portrayer of “Fleabag’s” Hot Priest, Andrew Scott is back with his red-hot turn on “Black Mirror” installment “Smithereens.” As none of the fifth season’s three standalone episodes met the 75-minute runtime requirement to contend as a TV movie, the TV academy ruled the Netflix anthology a drama series for the first time, allowing Scott, who appeared in one of three, to compete as a guest actor. Celebrating his career-first Emmy bid in Best Drama Guest Actor, the Irish actor is “Black Mirror’s” sole representation at this year’s awards.
Scott plays Chris Gillhaney, a London-based rideshare driver who picks up and abducts an intern of the social media company Smithereen, Jaden Tommins (Damson Idris), initially convinced that he’s an important employee. Rozon’s Roman is the owner of The Roman Agency, his eponymous real estate firm specializing in “metaphysically engaged” properties. He has gained a whispered reputation as someone who could...

In a world beset by dozens of streaming options, what are some of the less popular and essential streaming services to do? Well bundle, of course!
Earlier this week, in “wait, did we accidentally invent cable again?” news, Apple announced a new partnership with ViacomCBS to provide Apple TV+ subscribers with a new bundling option. As of August 17, 2020, Apple TV+ users are now able to purchase additional access to CBS All Access and Showtime for $9.99 a month after a seven day free trial.
Content from all three services will be available to watch online and offline without any advertisements. The package will also feature a “Family Sharing” service in which up to six members of a household can share Apple TV+, CBS All Access, and Showtime subscriptions through one Apple ID.

“Hired to be fired.” That’s what radio DJ Amy Marlowe (Caroline Williams) tells her boss (William Youmans) one rainy night before her show… her final show at Wlst Radio, to be exact, as she’s getting the proverbial boot to make room for young up-and-comer Sienna (Nicole Kang). Amy knows that 30 years at one radio station is a damn good run for any DJ, but that doesn’t make leaving any easier. There’s the lack of respect (and sexual harassment) from her superior, the audacity to be asked to have Sienna shadow her on her last day, the fear of a forced major life change, and then there’s that pesky bite on Amy’s neck that isn’t helping matters, either, especially since it may have come from a bat with rabies… or something much, much worse.

The real challenge with this series will be identifying the true monsters.
What appeared to be a simple missing-person case was introduced on Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 1.
But there's nothing simple about the journey taken by Atticus "TIc" Freeman, his uncle George Freeman, and his childhood friend Letitia "Leti" Lewis across the eastern half of 1950s America.
Misha Green (Underground) is the showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer for Lovecraft Country, while Jordan Peele (The Twilight Zone) and J.J. Abrams also serve as executive producers.
With such firepower behind the camera, this timely adaptation of the Matt Ruff novel effectively takes aim at the systematic racism, which sadly still exists in this country more than a half-century later.
Tic is a fan of pulp fiction but not particularly of the racist horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, for whom the novel and production is named.

101 Films are set to release Adam Simon’s Brain Dead, a mind-bending nightmare based on a story from The Twilight Zone writer Charles Beaumont, for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK as part of their 101 Films Black Label.
The Eunice Corporation is on the ground floor of an exciting growth industry, utilizing a memory re-sculpting technique pioneered by eccentric neurosurgeon Rex Martin (Bill Pullman). It envisions nationwide clinics where anyone can lose the hang-ups of an unhappy childhood, a failed romance or a botched career. At Eunice’s “New You” outlets, a simple operation will give customers peace of mind. Or it might leave them brain dead. But when Martin refuses to cooperate with Eunice, he soon finds himself plunged into a surreal existence that intertwines dreams and reality. Has Martin slipped over the edge into madness? 2020, as well as being an all-round garbage fire, is likely to go down as a strange year for film. Almost all of year’s biggest titles remain in limbo, waiting for cinemas to be able to safely reopen. That said, more than half way through the year, we have now seen a lot of excellent films getting released. Some managed to sneak in to cinemas in ‘the time before’, but many have made their debuts via streaming or paid VOD.
Even with a much reduced slate, there are still great films out there that have either got lost in the shuffle or might not have had the mainstream appeal to connect with an audience as wide as they deserve. Here, we’ve got several of the Hey U Guys staff together to pick some of their favourites of 2020 so far that you might not have caught up with yet.

Having racked up dual Emmy acting nominations for “The Outsider” in Best Drama Guest Actor and “Ozark” in Best Drama Actor, Jason Bateman is primed to pull off the highly specific thing Ann Dowd did three years ago: win a main acting race for a show nominated for Best Drama Series while also competing in a guest acting category as a show’s only bid.
In 2017, Dowd double-dipped for “The Leftovers” in drama guest actress and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in drama supporting actress, triumphing for the latter. While her victory for “Handmaid’s” was part of the Hulu series’ sweep – it collected eight statuettes, including Best Drama Series – her nom for “The Leftovers’” was the HBO series’ lone Emmy bid in its entire three-season run, thus a clear manifestation of support for the veteran actress (who was celebrating her first two career noms that year).

ViacomCBS Networks International is poised to potentially change the streaming game in an astonishingly complex way, thanks to plans for a brand-encompassing, all-demographics-aimed streamer by the corporate giant.
Vcni has announced that it will launch a yet-to-be named international “super-sized” premium streaming platform in the first quarter of 2021. Said platform will feature a surreal variety of content culled from its subsidiary platforms, most notably premium cable channel Showtime and subscription streamer CBS All Access, adding to the library of the latter, which is already set to feature content from Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Paramount Network, along with movies from Paramount Pictures. However, for now, the emphasis on this streamer must be placed on “international,” since the initial launch will only see it arrive in Australia, Latin America and the Nordics. As David Lynn, President and CEO of Vcni, expresses in a statement:

Hunters Season 2 is set to continue the titular team’s Nazi-wasting ways.
Amazon Studios officially made the order for a second season of the campy, alt-universe, ultraviolent crime thriller series, Hunters, stopping short of setting any production or Amazon Prime Video release windows, obviously due to the intrinsic uncertainty of the Covid era. However, the second season renewal announcement was posted with an accompanying teaser trailer bearing the era-appropriate imagery of a spinning Season 2 logo-brandishing vinyl record before building to the opening bass line of a show-familiar tune in Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer.”

On Oct. 1, 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth simultaneously, despite none of them being pregnant when the day began. Seven of those children found their way into the care of eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves and his Umbrella Academy. Now, the Umbrella Academy kids are making another, perhaps even stranger transition… into the world of trading cards.
Sci-Fi Hobby, a division of Rittenhouse Archives and a specialist in nerd-friendly collectible cards, will be releasing the first-ever batch of Umbrella Academy trading cards on July 29, just two days before The Umbrella Academy’s second season premieres on Netflix. Even if you’ve seen the footage before, in L.A. punk docs and Vh-1 specials, it’s still thrilling to watch: Five women on stage, their outfits resembling a day-glo mix of thrift-store chic and a temper tantrum’s aftermath, two different kinds of eyeshadow and smeared streaks of rouge fighting for dominance, bashing out crude anthems at the Masque Club. “They played three songs, and two of them were the same song,” one witness remembers about that gig.

Acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele is teaming up with “Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae for “Sinkhole,” an upcoming film from Universal Pictures that will tackle questions of female perfection and identity.
Deadline reported that Universal beat out more than 10 studio bidders and multiple talent and filmmaker packages for screen rights in what amounted to a low seven-figure deal. The film will reportedly be an adaptation of author Leyna Krow’s short story, which follows a young family that moves into its dream home despite the gaping sinkhole in the backyard. The mysterious sinkhole manages to fix broken and destroyed things. However, the story asks, what if that thing is a person?
Though the project is being developed as a potential star vehicle for Rae, firm casting details and a prospective release date have not been determined. Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Sara Scott will oversee the project for the studio.

Greg Kinnear has signed on for a leading role in the Starz pilot “Shining Vale.”
He joins previously announced series star Courtney Cox. “Shining Vale” is a half-hour horror comedy about a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Pat (Cox), who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same.
Kinnear will star as Terry, Pat’s husband. He is described as a sweet, sensitive guy who enjoys a good laugh almost as much as a good cry. He assumed he was married to the perfect wife until she had an affair with their young handyman, destroying the kitchen island, and maybe his marriage. Ever the optimist, Terry is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his family together,...

The UnXplained will premiere on History on July 11, confounding viewers with impossible tales improbably told. But the most inexplicable thing about the paranormal-and-beyond series is its host. William Shatner is not just an actor or a star, he is almost public domain. His breakthrough character, Captain James T. Kirk, was recognized and claimed by popular culture, the counterculture, and the subculture of Star Trek aficionados.
Shatner started his career as a workaholic actor who never said no. He took big and small parts on great TV shows and movies, and awful ones. He’d go on to continue his work in popular TV series with appearances in indie and B-movie films which have become cult classics. It’s been over 20 years since Hollywood evoked the vengeance-fueled specter of horror franchise Candyman, but the hiatus is coming to an end. With Hollywood’s reboot/remake epoch showing no signs of slowing down, and the buzz surrounding Blumhouse’s recent Halloween sequel/reboot, it appears that the Candyman’s cinematic rebirth is nigh.
Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions have conjured a new Candyman manifestation. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directed the film off a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The film is a “spiritual sequel” that “returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.”
The project arose after the rights—originally held by the now-defunct PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and distributed by Tri-Star—recently became available. MGM will produce with Monkeypaw, with Universal Pictures set to distribute.

What at first seems like an ordinary online dating experience spirals into a stolen identity crisis and increasing paranoia for a reclusive man (Lukas Haas) in the new thriller Browse, and with the film out now on VOD from FilmRise, we caught up with director Mike Testin to discuss the film's psychological thrills, utilization of modern-day technology, and working with a cast that includes Haas and Jocelin Donahue.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Browse! When did you first read Mario Carvalhal’s screenplay for Browse, and what made you want to bring it to life on screen?
Mike Testin: Thank you! I first read Mario’s script about three months before we went into production. The guys at Boulderlight sent it to me knowing it aligned well with my sensibilities. I love the subjective psycho thriller/paranoia movies of the late ’60s,...
