Peg Bag...


My store bought peg bag fell to pieces a couple of weeks ago and I've just been throwing the pegs into the bottom of the basket. The pegs were in the bottom of the basket, I'd pile the wet clothes on top, then I had to rummage around to reach the pegs at the bottom.

I didn't want another flimsy store bought fabric peg bag, nor did I want a metal basket which would only rust, so it was time to make a new one.

A quick search online came up with lots of fancy schmancy peg bags. They weren't particularly hard to make, but I just wasn't that interested in spending any time making one. Then I came across a super quick how to by The Family Homestead.


My new peg bag has to be the quickest project I've ever made. I don't even think it can be called a project, as it took all of three minutes to make.

  • Find an old shirt.
  • Find a coat hanger. (I've used one that has a tongue to prevent it from blowing off the line).
  • Undo the top couple of buttons.
  • Sew the opening from the top closed button to the bottom of the bag shut, so the pegs don't fall out. (I wanted to keep the buttons on, so this meant moving the needle position as far to the right as it would go).
  • Sew across the bottom of the shirt to form a bag.
  • Turn right side out and insert the coat hanger.

That's all there is to it. I wish I'd thought of this. It's a brilliant idea!!!

      I made a bag like this when I was first married 6 years ago! It wore out and I eventually started using an apron with three large front pockets for my clothes pins. :) It works so well!

      Oh you're right Pam that is a BRILLIANT idea! I love the simplicity of it! I really must mend my peg bag. It used to belong to my granny - my mum made it for her years ago - makes me think of them both every time I hang clothes out!

      How has this held up over time? I am supposed to make some peg bags and I am afraid of them wearing out if I don't use heavier material.
