Last week, we were delighted to collaborate with City of Bunbury and APM for an Accessible Business Forum, in acknowledgement of International Day of People with a Disability. You may remember the recent training we held here at Chamber House with CEO Stu Schonell from Advocacy WA on what to consider when employing people living with a disability. The take homes were reiterated with the following reminders: 📌Absenteeism is low when employing people with a disability and loyal to a tee! 📌If you have a diverse workplace, did you know that your team perform better, with a recorded 20% increase in productivity? 📌Barriers still exist with organisations as they are unprepared to employ people living with a disability 📌Do you have an accessible toolkit? 📌People living in a chair don’t want to feel different 📌Websites – have we considered barriers in reading or accessing information As a Chamber some considerations we need to review is an adjustable lecturn, our website & alternate text, and ease of access through our building. If there was a rating system Rob Manning would give us a ‘silver’ based on his experience, but there is still more work to do. We will be partnering with Advocacy WA and Volunteer South West in the New Year to bring more awareness training to businesses in our region.

This year, the Shire is also using the Community Perceptions Survey to understand the future needs, aspirations and priorities of community members. The information gathered will be a key input into the review of their 10-year Strategic Community Plan in 2025. Complete the survey to go into the draw to 𝗪𝗜𝗡 𝟭 𝗼𝗳 𝟯 $𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀! Supporting locally owned businesses is more important than ever. This morning, Julie visited Bahlu, her local café, where she delivered co-owner Mia one of our locally-owned stickers thanks to the Bunbury Geographe Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the City of Bunbury. Over the next week, we’ll be distributing stickers to retailers & businesses to highlight their commitment to our community and the importance of supporting local! The four shires—Bunbury, Shire of Harvey, Shire of Capel, and Shire of Dardanup —are rallying together for this initiative throughout the month, and your sticker will feature whichever Shire you reside in. Are you a retailer who wants to display your support for locally owned business? Drop your business name in the comments below, and we’ll make sure to bring a sticker your way! P.S. Keep an ear out for our radio campaign on Hit FM spreading the same important message!
