The Federal Government’s proposed ban on social media is both dangerous to free speech and risks dooming a generation of Australia’s children to digital illiteracy. The joke of a less-than-24 hours senate inquiry into this ban received > 15000 public submissions, which one assumes will all go unread. Funny how “efficient” the Federal Government can be when it comes to taking power away from people. Less than a month between first floating the idea of this ban to enacting legislation to implement it … imagine if the cost of housing crisis was attacked with such velocity! Meanwhile the gambling advertisement ban had a full length committee, expert recommendations, months of input and has just been shelved as “too hard”. Follow the money … The lack of legacy media coverage of this disaster is ironically great evidence for why we need to protect online media from further government regulation. Is this a sign we’ve had our fill of junk content and doomscrolling? Macquarie Dictionary has named its Word of the Year for 2024… 🥁 Enshittification. Originally coined by Cory Doctorow to describe the increasingly crappy experiences we put up with on our various social media platforms, it’s also the vibe of the times. It’s the crap-ton of AI-generated, spammy, and algorithm-bubble content we deal with every day. And the experience is… shitty. 💩 Plus there’s the longer term impact, aptly described by a runner-up word… Brainrot. 🫣 That’s what happens when we let ourselves wallow in low-quality, low-value internet content. And that’s not AI’s fault. It’s ours. Humans are selling their attention spans to these platforms, and humans are falling for the faux-personalisation of their feeds. #Funding. #Marsden. Blue skies research is outside of the box of materialism and reductionist thinking. Breaking new ground and creating a deeper understanding of our reality based on measurement. Put this in context. Measurement has only been able to identify 5% of the universe based on the ideas of stable atoms and solid matter physics. The unknowns that remain to be explored are things like the missing antimatter in cosmology, the identification of dark energy and dark matter that make up the other 95% and remains currently unknown. The horizon problem in cosmology. The Baryonic asymmetry issue. Quantum tunnelling and the origin of mass and charge in atomic theory. Unification of the physics of cosmology with biology to enable a deeper understanding of biology and how it operates in order to address the issues of health and wellbeing. Every difficult question that is answered can result in a deeper set of insights that leads to a greater appreciation of new opportunities to unlock the comprehension of space and time on an atomic scale along with a cosmological scale. The scales are connected. You are in the centre of two scales. One cosmic. One subatomic. Light at either end of the two scales links the nucleus Strong Force with the cosmological Gravitational process. What should Marsden fund?

The Allan Labor Government has issued a new cost escalation guide for public infrastructure projects as dozens school upgrades, office refurbishments, rectification works and public transport upgrades suffer cost blowouts. Whether it’s building the North East Link or delivering a minor office refurb, Labor cannot manage projects and Victorians are paying the price. Financial mismanagement has consequences. A decade of waste and cost blowouts under Labor has driven Victoria’s debt to a record high which is now starving funding from frontline health, education, infrastructure and community safety services. Under the Allan Labor Government, cost blowouts on projects big, small and everything in between have become the norm and every dollar wasted is one less for desperately needed frontline services across the state. This new blowout guide is an admission that Labor cannot manage money and has lost control of delivery of projects of all sizes.

To be a more persuasive communicator, copy the three features in the opening lines of this recent press release.* Firstly, it hits its key message in the first line: "New data shows inflation has now almost halved since the Albanese Labor Government came to office". ➡️ Whether you're speaking or writing an email, know your key message and state it clearly as early as possible. Then, it acknowledges where its audience is right now. Rather than ignoring what's on their minds, it recognises it by saying, inflation's "still too high". ➡️ Understand your audience and what they're thinking. Don't ignore the negative; acknowledge it. Thirdly, it moves from the past and present towards the future by outlining the focus of next month's budget: "easing cost of living pressures". ➡️ Be positive by looking towards the future and action. Counter the negative with concrete steps you'll take to improve the situation. How could you use one of these practices to make your communication better today? *I know this is a political release. So here we have Albanese blindly following the failed 2019 election campaign policies by former Opposition Leader, and now retired, Bill Shorten. Is it any wonder why investors and the majority of the Australian Public do not want to see these sorts of dramatic changes to property and tax laws. I recall when Bill Shorten lost the unlosable election for openly supporting the removal of Negative Gearing. You cannot have your cake and eat it too as far as the public are concerned Labor. On one hand The Government wants to take a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) at 50% when an investor makes a profit from years of investing. This gain is only because the investor faced risk of losses and a weight on their finances, given nothing in life is guaranteed. Removing negative gearing without giving back any concessions on CGT, is a double dip tax proposal that only allows the Government to continue blowing $Billions of taxpayer dollars on ideological waste and mismanaged mega projects to support their CFMEU mates. At least we know where Albo and Labor sit on this topic before the election.

Kane Thornton Just one more thought about the rear end (of nuclear). Decommissioning costs for nuclear ( closing down the old reactors and cleaning up the sites where they were) is massively expensive and always underestimated. Several years ago the UK were discussing decommissioning 12 of their old Magnox reactors. Time scales were not given, but the cost was put at £120 billion. Earlier this year another estimate was developed. This report included a timescale (100 years). The cost? £260 billion (A$520 billion). Another point you didn’t get to make in your article is, even if we were crazy enough to build all 7 of these nuclear white elephants, the CSIRO/AEMO Gencost report confirms they would collectively provide only 4% (Yes, that’s right, only FOUR PERCENT) of Australia’s energy in 2050. Why would you waste taxpayers money in this way? #nuclearfantasy #taxpayersmoney #renewables

Last Week I was invited to moderate a Session at the 'NWT Indigenous Leaders’ Economic Forum' on INVESTOR CONFIDENCE alongside Curtis Shaw Nancy Southern, ATCO, and Eira Thomas, North Arrow Minerals. Our discussion focused on the enduring challenges of doing business in the region, newer risks and opportunities for the critical minerals sector, and what is needed to support the region’s new generation of mining opportunities and an overall well-functioning and prosperous Northern economy. Every Indigenous leader (First Nation, Inuit, Metis) in the NWT was present. Being witness to the discussions was a bit like suddenly remembering a piece of a dream or part of a past event I had until then forgotten about. The conversations were driven by an earnest desire to find and create mechanisms to enable the NWT's Indigenous leaders to work together whether through shared projects and/or pooling equity in order to achieve shared prosperity. Then I remembered, ah yes! I am witnessing democracy at its best. Some of the Investor Confidence Session takeaways: -         Equity sharing (period). -         Real partnerships are real when the aim, prosperity, and feeling of success is shared by all partners. -         Government as well as business led projects in the North must recognise that the goal of shared prosperity begins from a project’s inception, and it is the difference between success and failure. -         Government has a role to play in facilitating efforts by Indigenous governments and industry to work together. -         The regulatory processes must be streamlined to match the urgency of project needs. -         Project needs with urgency: . The sun is setting on long-standing mines in the NWT. Critical minerals mining projects with potential abound. Investment and infrastructure is required. . The North and whole of Canada is running out of time. The critical mineral Strategy will fail, and markets will move on to other things if the regulatory process does not meet the project needs of today.   Thank you Darrell Beaulieu and Denendeh Investments LP for inviting me and congratulations Darrell on the Forum's success!

Positive and negative disclosures are both important ... but compliance thinking tends to focus on what companies do (positive disclosure) whereas transparency includes what they don't (negative disclosure). Given the crisis in Australian public trust, giving your employees, customers, and shareholders clarity on what you don't do removes doubt. For example, political donations, gifts to politicians, employing senior political party office holders: disclosure that a company has a policy not to do these things is recognised and rewarded in the Openly model. Voluntary, visible and accessible disclosure. This is a huge step toward a transparency mindset when business interacts with government.

Labor DNA and selective subsidy. Labor's 'manipulation of headline inflation through subsidies' and energy rebates Labor’s “fiscally unsustainable manipulation of headline inflation through subsidies” has come under fire after new figures showed headline inflation drop under three per cent for the first time since 2021. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest quarterly inflation report found headline inflation dropped from 3.8 per cent to 2.8 per cent for the 12 months to the September quarter while trimmed mean inflation, the RBA’s preferred measure, fell from four per cent to 3.5. While a significant drop, Wednesday’s figures come amid a swath of government power rebates. Lies damn lies and statistics; One-off $1000 power bill discount for each Queensland household, $75 per household from the first of the federal government’s Energy Bill Relief Fund, a $400 subsidy in Western Australia and the $250 Renewable Energy Dividend Payment in Tasmania. So Labor does not provide household subsidies to all Australians just those that are in the demographic that benefit their votes and ideology. Australia under Labor the welfare nation at the expense of the aspirational worker nation.

Is Peter Dutton being drawn into a political trap by jumping too far ahead of public opinion on nuclear energy? There’s an element of crash or crash through in Peter Dutton’s seemingly Quixotic tilt at nuclear energy where the timing just doesn’t seem right. Effectively Dutton is seeking to upend Australia’s energy transition and arguing we should start all over again, at the excruciatingly painful cost of possibly 10 to 15 years of lost time, maybe longer. It’s not surprising that this policy will find trouble in getting industry on side, even if nuclear is in the energy mix of most major developed nations. The view is that this debate's both too, too late and too disruptive. There is long-standing voter concern about high energy prices, that Dutton’s seeking to exploit through his initial move to recast the debate by withdrawing his support for the “unachievable” 2030 and any new 2035 renewable targets. However public support for the energy transition remains strong, even if polling is showing that the gloss is coming off renewables and scepticism is starting to creep in about whether Australia can reach ambitious targets. At best nuclear may resonate in rural and regional areas struggling with disruption from wind and transmission projects. That explains why the National Party’s prepared to take a hit and have all the nuclear stations in their electorates where there are existing coal-fired power sites. It could still be a political game-changer in the wider community by transforming the energy transition to a cost-of-living issue. But the burning question is can you convince (swinging) voters that making a jump to nuclear makes a difference on price, or are we just playing to an echo-chamber of rusted-on supporters and climate change deniers. It’s not as if the energy transition is going swimmingly well in Australia. Dutton is right to raise legitimate questions about the social and economic costs of our energy transition. That cost to consumers is currently around $100bn in retail bill concessions and financial incentives and grants for renewables and green innovation. It also can’t be overlooked that the government’s transition plan is also a leap into the unknown to weather dependent, intermittent renewables that could supply up to 95% of our electricity. That contrasts with the real economic benefit in nuclear that delivers clean 24 hour energy baseload. However Dutton’s nuclear crusade ignores Napoleon Bonaparte’s famous battle winning strategy: Never interrupt your enemy when he’s making a mistake. It piles pressure on Dutton to make what will be a complex, tricky case for nuclear which will be seized on by an under pressure Albanese Government happy to draw the Coalition into a political trap. He faces a hurculean task to overturn both entrenched community sentiment that renewables are a force for good: and defeat a powerful force of industry and financial institutions who will fight any policy u-turn. #NuclearTrap.
