CDP and the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) (a centralized repository of corporate GHG emissions data) have expanded their partnership to provide free public access to core climate data from over 10,000 companies, representing more than 50% of global market capitalization. This initiative aims to streamline corporate climate reporting, align with global reporting standards, and support the objectives of the Paris Agreement by enabling stakeholders to track progress toward climate goals. By making critical climate data openly accessible, the partnership fosters greater transparency and collaboration in addressing climate change.

The Australian Government has agreed, or agreed in principle, to all 15 recommendations in the Climate Change Authority’s 2023 review of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, which establishes the Australian Carbon Credit Units Scheme. The #ACCUScheme is a voluntary scheme that supports investment in projects to reduce emissions or store carbon. The authority’s recommendations focus on:  • enhancing the scheme’s transparency, including publishing more information about ACCU projects and decisions made by the Integrity Committee • strengthening method review processes, including more regular reviews • increasing scheme participation for #FirstNations people and rural, regional and remote communities • keeping up with #globalcarbonmarket developments. The recommendations build on the Independent Review of the Australian Carbon Credit Units, led by Professor Ian Chubb AC, which also recommended improvements to governance, transparency and enhancing confidence in the integrity and effectiveness of the scheme. On October 30, the Australian Government announced the prioritisation of four new proponent-led methods for development under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme. This initiative aims to bolster carbon market innovation and supports the nation’s commitment to emissions reductions and net zero climate targets. The proponent-led method development is part of ongoing ACCU Scheme reforms, stemming from recommendations in the Independent Review of ACCUs. Prioritised Methods: - Improved Native Forest Management in Multiple-use Public Forests: Proposed by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, this method would delay or stop timber harvesting to allow forests to store more carbon. - Extending Savanna Fire Management to the Northern Arid Zone: Suggested by the Indigenous Desert Alliance, this method focuses on expanding fire management practices to reduce emissions and enhance economic opportunities for First Nations communities in northern Australia. - Improved Avoided Clearing of Native Regrowth: A proposal by the Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation, which incentivizes farmers to preserve native forest regrowth rather than clear it for agriculture, securing ACCUs for the stored carbon. - Reducing Disturbance of Coastal and Floodplain Wetlands: Developed by the Northern Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance and the University of Queensland, this method seeks to manage ungulates (e.g., water buffalo, pigs) to protect wetlands, thereby reducing emissions released from disturbed ecosystems. Next Steps: The government will collaborate with the developers of these prioritised methods to advance their proposals. The Independent Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee (ERAC) has provided advisory support for these developments. Yesterday the Australian Government announced the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water would receive $23.0 million in 2024-25 to continue delivering the government's circular economy policy, program, and legislative functions. We desperately need a national framework and federal regulation - so this is a good start 👏 The big question I’ll be unpacking today at Coffs Waste Conference will be, “Has the 2024-25 Federal Budget gone far to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and transitioning to a more circular and low carbon economy?” Looking forward to chatting to industry as well as state and local government leaders about how Budget measures to increase circularity and reduce carbon emissions.
