The cameo itself is perfectly carved, a lady in profile wearing a braided crown, earrings and necklace. The color of the shell is a rich, warm tan, and the carved cameo portion is creamy with hints of coral. Cameo is the art of carving a layered material, creating a portrait or landscape with the difference in the colors. While traditionally done in shell, banded onyx has been used in cameo work - particularly in Greece and Italy - for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
