Series 6 /Episode 11: Conversation with Alex Rybolov I had a conversation with Alex Rybolov, P.Eng. on #BoannImaginationFlowCreatiivity that enabled both of us to look at creativity differently. "As a design engineer, creativity is everywhere in the process," he says. Creativity can be a part of big problems or little problems that require solving, given different types of constraints. It can be associated with hardware components or involve finding different ways of working with software professions. Check this article out. It showcases why we at Society Five.0 are working with businesses on their technology journey. Generative AI has great potential for Canadian businesses, but a new report from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce shows few are adopting it. Only 9% of firms use generative tools, while 73% haven’t considered it. Larger and newer companies are more likely to experiment with the technology, but widespread adoption may not happen until 2030, putting Canada behind other economies. Toronto's government software waste highlights a broader problem in public sector tech adoption: misaligned incentives and outdated systems lead to millions in waste. The City of Toronto's Auditor General just released a scathing report showing the city wasted $11M on unused software licenses. Let's break down the numbers: 💸 Total software budget (2019-2023): $235M 💸 Total waste identified: $10.9M 💸 Unused Microsoft M365 licenses: $6.9M 💸 Inactive employee licenses: $1.4M The most striking example? In 2021, Toronto bought 10,000 Microsoft M365 licenses at $5.1M annually despite Microsoft explicitly warning their network could only handle 6,000 users. The results were predictable: 1⃣ Year 1: 90% of licenses went unused 2⃣ Year 2: Over 50% still unused 3⃣ Expected $27M in productivity gains never materialized 4⃣ Security risks from keeping active licenses for departed employees This isn't about blaming individual civil servants—they're working within a system that often prioritizes bulk purchasing to save money without considering implementation challenges. The problem is structural: 1️⃣ Incentives reward immediate cost savings over long-term efficiency 2️⃣ Procurement systems designed for physical goods struggle with digital services 3️⃣ Limited flexibility to adjust plans when circumstances change 4️⃣ Complex approval processes that slow down essential infrastructure upgrades The most concerning part? This isn't new. The Auditor noted that 12 recommendations from previous software audits remain unimplemented, most over 5 years old. This persistence suggests the issue isn't with people, but with the system itself. The real questions we should be asking: ❓ How can we redesign procurement systems for the digital age? ❓ What incentives would better align public spending with public value? ❓ How many other cities face similar structural challenges? "The OCS told StratCann via email that “during a recent system upgrade, a technical issue resulted in some Ontario cannabis retailers receiving multiple copies of a single retailer’s order confirmation email that included the business email addresses of some other retailers.”-David Brown, StratCann And, ask if they've ever completed a security audit to look for holes; or assess adopting a "data pool" (AI), where all client data is technically mixed together into a single Large Language Model where I predict the dumb machine will distribute the the wrong data. AI can not beat good old trusted database technology IMHO; even if the breach was not due to AI; I wanted to share this warning to those of you who do plug your client data into the new AI tech. We at Cropsify don't yet trust the AI with sensitive data, it's good for marketing and fun stuff so far; will wait to see how it pans out. #datasecurity #AI #privacy

Coming up with a business idea is easy. But that’s just the beginning. Turning that idea into reality takes investment, relentless effort to find customers, and unwavering dedication to deliver services that truly benefit your clients. This is the behind-the-scenes hustle that often goes unnoticed. The public only gets to see the polished end result and assume it was effortless. It's not. If it were easy, everyone would do it. When I envisioned THE DOPE BOX, many told me it was a fantastic idea. Thankfully, I had supportive friends in the industry that encouraged me to explore it further. But to truly bring the idea to life, I needed the unwavering support of my family. My wife and daughter volunteer their time, juggling their regular jobs and sacrificing their free time to help build the business. They turn our house upside down for a week to sort, pack and ship 300 boxes for Retailers across Ontario. Take a look at the video below to see the dedication and hard work they put in. I wanted to share this story to highlight the immense effort required to make a business succeed. Maybe one day, we’ll be able to hire people to handle the packaging, but until then, it’s all about the sweat equity from my family to keep the business running. A year from now, when the business is thriving; only we will remember the journey and the sacrifices we made. Others will say we are lucky to have our own business. Such a great blog post which I suggest every founder read. So many golden nuggets in here. But one that stands out: What are some qualities that you see in the most successful founders? Well, I love smart people, with high IQs, and high EQs, that’s great. But, of the founders that I see, the highest correlation with success is with their grit quotient. They’re not necessarily the smartest people in the world, but their grit and determination are unbelievable. They never give up and always find a way to blast through any obstacle they face. I always get questions I don’t always have the perfect answer to. But if there’s one thing I know, it’s that early-stage startups face a major hurdle: funding, especially when legal fees eat up precious cash before you even have traction. So when I find tools that make it easier for founders to get set up without burning their budgets, I love to share. Here are two excellent resources I came across from NACO Canada and Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA). Both offer templates and standardized docs to help you save on legal fees, streamline deal structures, and keep more cash focused on growth. 1. NACO’s Common Docs NACO (National Angel Capital Organization) has crafted a set of Common Docs to simplify early-stage deal structuring, making it easier to align with investors without a huge legal bill. Perfect for startups navigating their first rounds. Canadian Founders Shouldn’t need to leave Canada. We need to fix our system. 🍁 Last week I was catching up with a founder from Canada. She had just returned from spending 3 months in SF. She said it was insane how the entire ecosystem there is built to incubate and launch startups but then also support them for the entire lifecycle through Series A and beyond.  In Canada we’re ok at getting companies started but then we have little support beyond that and we ultimately lose them to the valley. Her suggestion was to take all the money the Canadian government is throwing at our tech sector, and instead use it to send our Founders to SF for 3 months for a Founder crash course. As a Canadian, hearing that is super depressing but also accurate. My roadmap at Developer Capital is to find and fund great Canadian companies in the pre-seed and seed round, but then get them into the US for their Series A. Why? Valuations are better, risk appetites are sharper and it will help your sales when breaking into the US market. How can we as a country support them and encourage them to stay in Canada? The Challenge: Canada’s Startup Ecosystem is Broken 💔 If we don’t want to lose our brightest founders to the US, we need to re-evaluate our approach. We need to provide the SF experience right here at home. Here’s what we can do: ⚫ Access to capital. Yeah, im sure you’ve heard this before. Pre-seed doesn’t exist in Canada. Developer Capital is trying to change that but we’re only one firm. There needs to be more deal flow sharing amongst the pre-seed and seed stage funds. This one’s on us in the VC community. We can do better. We can share our deals. We can get out in the world more and meet Founders. Rather than waiting for others to validate our own opinions we can lead rounds and be first money in. ⚫ Ecosystem support. It’s pretty nuts the difference this one makes. When a company comes out of SF they instantly have access to a network of 1000’s of early adopter companies to go out and buy their product. And the VCs who invest ask all their Portcos to take a deep look at buying these great new products. Incestuous? Yes but it works, and gets these start ups to millions in ARR fairly quickly. ⚫ The right infrastructure: Accelerators and incubators sometimes get a bad rap, but the good ones do the job of acting like a bootcamp to get your company launched, understand how to get financed, and then how to iterate until you find product market fit. Canada needs to up its game and come out with a couple of AAA accelerators. If McGill is the “Harvard of the North” why can’t Canada have a “YC of the North”? I’m not pretending to have all the solutions. This is clearly a “hard problem to solve”. But as a proud Canadian I know we can do better and I want to be able for our best companies to stay here forever (whatup Shopify). We have the talent and the ideas; now we need the infrastructure and the networks to match. Let's make Canada a powerhouse! 🍁 🚀
