This is the method I often use and it helps keep my quilt tops nice and square.   Once you have cut your sashing or border strips to the correct length, pin with the sashing or border on the underside, that way you can watch where your seams are going when piecing them together.   First, pin each end, then the middle, then the middle of each side etc, along the length of the sashing or border that you’re adding. I also like to add a pin in any of the seams that I want to keep an eye on. And nope, I never iron any seams open, ever. I like to think of finishing the raw edges of a quilt – to be a little like adding the ribbon to a package wrapped with pretty paper – or the frame on a painting. The project is still pretty – but finishing the raw edges make it complete.
