A Really pretty VINTAGE 50's, DAMASCENE/TOLEDO Flowers & Birds Panels Bracelet features very intricate, very intensive detail work and is composed of eight panels, alternating the 4 squares with 4 oval, that are connected to each other by soldered links. Two designs or patterns have been used in making this bracelet, they alternate giving it a wonderful appeal. . The process involves using a steel cutting tool to score a design on the metal (steel) surface. After which the steel is dipped into an acid solution that darkens the background. This enables the pattern to stand out when the 24 karat gold or silver leaf is applied to the inscribed designs. Then the leaf is hammered into the design with tools that were made for use of this application. The final process involves mounting the piece onto brass. They used brass because it is long lasting and does not tarnish. Brass is also used in making fine costume jewelry because of this reason. During the 8th and 9th century, the Arabs brought Damascene work to Spain. Damascene got its name from the city of Damascus, where over 1000 years ago, the Arabs had journeyed to Spain.
