Tiny Sterling Silver Fire Opal Stud Earrings... This pair of sterling silver earrings is made with white lab-created opals that glow with pink, green, yellow, and blue specks. I have handset the opals in sterling silver prong settings. They are available in three different sizes. Pictured are the 10 x 8mm (3/8" x 5/16"). Also available in 7x 5mm (1/4" x 3/16") and 12 x 10mm (1/2" x 3/8"). What is a lab-created opal Lab-created opal gemstones are not imitations. They are very similar to natural opals while their value is much less. Since natural opals are so rare, especially those of a decent size and clarity lab-created opals are an excellent cost-effective alternative. Lab-created opals contain 70-90% silica (from which natural opal is formed) and 10-30% resin. The resin makes the opal harder, and more robust, unlike natural opals, which are known to be soft and fragile.
