Summary
[edit]DescriptionSouth Charnwood diorite (Markfieldite).jpg |
English: A small piece (c. 4cm maximum dimension) of rock from Hill Hole quarry, a now-disused quarry close to the village of Markfield at the edge of Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire. It is a microdiorite, now known as South Charnwood diorite but was formerly called Markfieldite. It is a very hard igneous rock of Precambrian age comprising pink/red feldspars, quartz and small amounts of dark ferro-magnesian minerals. It is still quarried on a large scale at Cliffe Hill quarry, close to Markfield and is used for roadstone. |
