As we continue to strive for a greener future, plug-in hybrids (PHEV) represent a practical and efficient solution. They bridge the gap between traditional vehicles and fully electric cars, making sustainable driving accessible to more people. Car buyers and fleet owners seem to agree: PHEVs are currently experiencing a resurgence. In Germany, 9% more PHEVs have been registered to date than in the previous year. And in China, this type of “new energy vehicle” has achieved record sales figures four months in a row. Why’s that? Maybe because car manufacturers are installing larger batteries with significantly longer ranges into their PHEV models. That means you can drive over 120 kilometres in your PHEV without recharging, which covers a large part of your everyday mobility purely electrically and thus locally emission-free. Plus, you still have a fuel reserve should you spontaneously need to travel a longer distance. At ZF, we saw this coming - as early as 2019 with our EVplus concept vehicle. That’s why we designed the fourth generation of our 8HP as the PHEV transmission par excellence. So you may call it a “transitional technology,” but that’s selling it short. 40 million axle drives from ZF – that's a lot of power packs. To transmit the drive forces of the engine to the wheels, each of these units can handle a nominal max axle torque between 2,500 and 9,000 Newton meters. You would guess that this means these axle drives are heavyweights, but guess again: Over the generations, ZF has consistently refined its lightweight construction. 🚀 🚗 Great success for our e-mobility team! The automotive supplier association CLEPA honors ZF as a top innovator in the “Green” category. The award-winning technology, an electric motor without rare earths, sets new standards in electromobility by dispensing with magnets and improving sustainability with the same performance. 🏆 “This award is a recognition of our continuous efforts to develop innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for electromobility,” says Otmar Scharrer, Head of Engineering Electrified Powertrain Technology at ZF. “With our electric motor, we are demonstrating a more sustainable alternative to conventional solutions that does not require the use of rare earths and at the same time offers maximum performance.”

A growing footprint for a growing market. When it comes to new energy vehicles, China continues to lead the charge. And with the opening of a new e-mobility plant in Shenyang, ZF strengthens its position in this high-value market. Its main products will be electric axle drives, based on ZF’s modular electric drive platform, including motors, power electronics and reducers. With the new Shenyang location, ZF advances its localization strategy for China. Among other things, shorter supply lines, as well as immediate access to raw materials, equipment and R&D, opens new business opportunities. More range, less CO₂: "TrailTrax" is the name of ZF's new drive system to electrify truck semitrailers. The all-in-one solution is based on the proven "AxTrax 2" electric axle from ZF. TrailTrax saves fuel and thus CO₂. It will help vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators to already prepare for the upcoming legislation on decarbonization.

And the winner is the ZF Bike Eco System 👏 We are extremely proud that our new e-bike drive system has won the German Design Award 2025 from the Rat für Formgebung - German Design Council! The ZF Bike Eco System has been awarded in the "Excellent Product Design - Bicycles and E-Bikes" category. First launched at the Eurobike 2024, the ZF Bike Eco System offers massive performance in a compact design. It includes all drive components such as e-motor, batteries, control units, app and a connection to the cloud.
