Why computer science?
1
Computer science is...
A tool that helps you tell a story or make something happen
A discipline that emphasizes persistence in problem solving
A skill that teaches students how to use computers to create, not just consume
Computer science is not...
Learning to type
Using a word processor to create documents
Computer repair
Playing video games
WHY COMPUTER SCIENCE?
Computer science develops students’ computational and critical thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply consume, new technologies.
WHY COMPUTER SCIENCE?
Computer science creates opportunity for analytical and creative thinking.
Whether or not students pursue computer science in school and their careers, these skills lay a foundation for success.
Employers estimate that 44% of workers’ skills
will be disrupted in the next five years. Cognitive
skills are reported to be growing in importance
most quickly, reflecting the increasing importance
of complex problem-solving in the workplace.
According to the 2023 World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report
WHY COMPUTER SCIENCE?
Many students lack access to computer science education
Based on data from 24,987 public high schools in the U.S., only 57.5% of public high schools offer at least one foundational computer science course.
Women only represented 31% of the computer science AP exam participants in 2022 while men represented 69%.
While 89% of Asian students and 82% of white students have access to foundational computer science courses, only 78% of Black, 78% of Hispanic, and 67% of Native American students have access.

Your materials, curriculum, and support have made a difference in my life and in my students’ lives. I currently have students who have signed up for technology classes in middle school that may not have considered it before. You are leading the way for students who have little or no means for enrichment in technology to have platinum training on an aluminum budget.

WHY COMPUTER SCIENCE?
CS First gets students started earlier
Early exposure to computer science can create interest and curiosity while giving students a sense of competency.
Studies show that many students form “STEM” or “non-STEM” identities by the eighth grade.
“
The only way to get more people into CS is to start early.
– Larry Page, Co-Founder Google

SUCCESS STORIES
Expanding access to computer science in South Texas
Bringing computer science to at-risk students
Providing free computer science lessons to students who couldn’t afford private tutoring
Empowering students to express themselves as creators
“
I teach at a school with a high percentage of English Language learners. I feel like the combination of coding as a third language, and allowing the students to express themselves in this environment, has affected many of my students in a life-changing way. I had a student show me his library card. He told me that his mom has been taking him to the library to code.
