Leela Samson is a Bharatnatyam dancer , choreographer, writer.

A representative of Kalakshetra in India, the institute for the classical arts founded by the late Rukmini Devi Arundale

Leela Samson has performed all over India and many countries in Europe, Africa and the Americas. She has also taken dance classes at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in UK. [1] She is at present(as on March 2010)the Director of Kalakshetra, Chennai.

Works

Leela has choreographed a number of group and solo compositions in Bharatanatyam. She has authored the following books:

  • Rhythm in Joy (1987)
  • Rukmini Devi: A Life[2]


Awards

Leela Samson was awarded the prestigious Padmashri award by the President of India in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the art of Bharata Natyam as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award instituted by the apex cultural body of the Government of India. She is at present the Director of Kalakshetra, Chennai.[3]
