The Wellington Independent was the first newspaper published in New Zealand's South Island. It was launched in April 1845 and continued until 1874 when it was replaced by Julius Vogel's New Zealand Times.[1]

The paper was published twice weekly from July 1854 and thrice weekly from July 1862,[2] and went daily in January 1871.[3]
