Common names

Hi @Khánum Gül:, we haven't interacted directly yet I don't think, but I've been really appreciating many of your contributions on Baha'i related pages, particularly with regards to source quality and NPOV issues. I have been active on WP for 15+ years—largely as an IP editor or under some old accounts—but have been gone for a few years and am just getting active again. I'm particularly trying to contribute to some pages on the history of Babism, reduce dependence on Nabíl's Narrative as the main source for articles about individuals who ae actually quite well covered in other sources. I'm also interested and well-versed in Mormon history and the history of librarianship and am working on some projects in those areas too.

I wanted to check in about naming conventions, I'm noticing you titling some pages with relatively obscure Arabic or Persian names that either don't show up outside of specialist literature, or in come cases are really hard to find in English language sources at all. In my understanding, WP:COMMONNAME policies mean we should be using the names that show up most often in reliable, accessible English language sources. Now, that doesn't mean we should ignore terminology used in Baha'i studies, nor make the Iranian origins of the subjects invisible. I suspect however that using Arabic/Persian terms which almost no anglophones familiar with the Baha'i Faith would have heard of for otherwise notable subjects reduces the accessibility and usefulness of the encyclopedia's coverage of Baha'i topics.

I just changed Bayt-i-'Aẓam to House of Bahá'u'lláh in Baghdad because all the cited sources used that or a very similar phrase to refer to the subject.

I figured before making any other changes I should just open a dialogue so we could consult and make sure that good faith editors aren't working at cross purposes and make sure any changes I make aren't perceived as critical when I'm actually really appreciating all your work here. Paragraphs and Periods moved to draftspace

Thanks for your contributions to Paragraphs and Periods. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit for review" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. Hey man im josh (talk) 20:16, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Hey man im josh,
Thank you for reviewing the article. I believe the notability of this subject is evident, as many academic sources have been written about this 11th-century book (there is also an article on its native Arabic Wikipedia). For the record, I have added three more peer-reviewed sources to a new section titled "Further Reading" to further demonstrate its notability. I apologize for leaving this article at a minimal level for the time being; I am currently working on another article and created this one primarily to turn some red links into blue (which have reverted back to red again). If you agree that this book is notable, I kindly ask that you consider publishing the article again. Thank you. Khánum Gül (talk) 16:06, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Me moving it to draft space does not prohibit you from disagreeing and moving it back. You are welcome to publish the article yourself if you have added additional sources and believe it to be notable. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:20, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for elaborating. I republished the article and will try to improve it accordingly. Khánum Gül (talk) 18:37, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some formatting tips

Hello Khánum Gül, welcome to Wikipedia.

After doing some formatting cleanup, I have some citation tips. I'm glad you're using the {{sfn}} template instead of the ref tags. It's much easier to manage and organize citations that way. I noticed that you're been defaulting to the {{sfnm}} template for all your citations. That one is used to bundle several citations into a single superscript. I recommend that you don't use the bundle template for a single citation, as it mucks up the text (I'm not sure if you edit the raw data or use the visual editor). If you do want to use multiple citations on the same sentence, then I recommend using two different single {{sfn}} templates. For cases with more than two citations... well try not to use more than two citations. See Wikipedia:Citation overkill. Also, Help:Shortened footnotes is a useful summary of how to use footnotes, with great examples.

On ref and footnote formatting, see my sandbox for some tips on how to get citations and footnotes to do what you want. Feel free to edit if you want to.

When adding references at the bottom of the article, a few tips:

  • Use lower case for all the template attributes
  • Alphabetize the reference section. I'm sure a bot could do this but I haven't figured out how to do it other than manually.
  • After the template, always use this order for the first few attributes: {{cite book |last= |first= |date= |title= .....}} it really helps with alphabetizing and organizing the reference section.
  • When using templates, it helps to follow the format of leaving a space before the verticle line "|" and no space after (e.g. like above).
  • In the reference section, don't leave a space between the asterisk and the template (e.g. *{{cite book}} not * {{cite book}}

I hope that was useful in some way. Cuñado ☼ - Talk 06:41, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
