Moon Se-yoon (born May 11, 1982), is a South Korean comedian and television personality.[2] He made his debut in the entertainment industry as a comedian in SBS, starting from comedy Good Friends [ko] in 2002. He became popular by appearing on SBS's People Looking for a Laugh [ko] and cable channel tvN's Comedy Big League. Currently he is a fixed cast member of Comedy Big League, 2 Days & 1 Night, Amazing Saturday and Delicious Guys, and managed by FNC Entertainment.[3]

Early life

[edit]

Moon Se-yoon was born weighing 4.5 kg on May 11, 1982 in Jungnang-gu, Seoul. Moon was known as a mischievous child in the neighborhood. He would wear a red toy car set and put on headphones while singing songs like Cho Yong-pil's "Empty Space," captivating the adults in the neighborhood with his cuteness. During his high school years, his nickname was "400 Won." Even though he only had 400 Won in his pocket, he always managed to enjoy himself thanks to his role as the "comedian" among his friends. He participated in a program called "Chasing the Stars" by a broadcasting company during high school, where he won an award for his impersonations, which became a stepping stone for him to enter the entertainment industry.[4]

Career

[edit]

Moon started his career as comedian through 2002 SBS Comedian Contest. In 2003, he joined SBS's comedy show People Looking for a Laugh [ko].[5] Moon Se-yoon rose to fame with his portrayal of a cross-dressing character wearing a nurse's attire. His catchy catchphrase, "I don't know~ la~yo~," became the highlights of the 'Quiz, Let's Play' comedy segment of the show. Additionally, he showcased his comedic talent in other segments of People Looking for a Laugh [ko], including the 'Fine Words Drama' corner, 'Pigeon Karaoke', and the Pyo's brother.[6][7]

In 2006, Moon Se-yoon appeared in the MBC sitcom "Elephant," directed by Lee Min-ho. Moon portrayed the character of Baek-soo Joo Bok-soo, the second son of Joo-hyun in the landlord's family. This marked Moon's first regular appearance in an MBC sitcom since his debut. "Elephant" was a sitcom that depicted the lives of both the landlord's family and the tenant's family. It included the school life of teenagers, passionate romance in their 20s, the challenges of unemployment and black comedy in their 30s, and the middle-aged and elderly life of the family in their 40s and 70s respectively.[8] Moon's performance earned him a nomination for Excellence Award in the MBC Entertainment Awards.[9]

In the same year, Moon Se-yoon was chosen to portray a ssireum wrestler in the film "Like a Virgin." The movie centered around the story of Dong-gu, an overweight high school boy who entered the world of wrestling to raise money for sex reassignment surgery. Moon took on the role of Song Young-bae, also known as 'Dungchi Won,' a senior member of Dong-gu's wrestling team (played by Ryu Deok-hwan). Song Young-bae agreed to teach Dong-gu wrestling techniques in exchange for receiving SES dance lessons. Moon, along with rapper Kim Yong-hoon and actor Yoon Won-seok, appeared as part of the 'Super Size Trio' in the film.[10][11]

Moon's performance earned him a nomination for Best New Actor at the 5th Korean Film Awards.[12] Moon was grateful to be working with talented individuals and to be part of a film that had the honor of being submitted to the Berlin International Film Festival. When he received compliments from everyone, saying, "You did a good job," it further motivated him to strive for even better movies in the future.[13]

Moon finished his mandatory military service and discharged in April 2013. He signed with A-List Entertainment in the same month. He and Jung Ju-rib joined tvN's Comedy Big League and is working with fellow comedians Lee Guk-joo.[14][15]

After joining FNC, Moon is active in entertainment show.[16]

Personal life

[edit]

Moon was familiar with Buddhism from a young age, thanks to the influence of his Buddhist mother. He expressed that temples were like comfortable resting places whenever he visited them, stating, "Whenever I go to a temple, it opens its arms and embraces me like a big tree." Growing up in this environment, he admitted that he didn't have an in-depth understanding of complex Buddhist terms but made an effort to study whenever he had the opportunity. Moon observed that while many people attend church on Sundays, it is challenging to say if they truly live by religious values.[13] Since July 2005, Moon has been serving as a DJ on the Buddhist broadcast 'Music Punch.' Moon approached his role as a DJ diligently, engaging with listeners by reading their text messages and emails containing different life stories, which provided him with valuable learning experiences.[13]

Moon Se-yoon and former LG Twins cheerleader team leader Kim Ha-na tied the knot at the Ceritsu Wedding Convention in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul on November 21, 2009, after dating for six years. The same-age-couple went on a honeymoon to Phuket, Thailand, Southeast Asia.[17] Moon Se-yoon later revealed that his initial encounter with Kim Ha-na took place on the online platform Daily Village. Kim Ha-na, who identified herself as a fan, reached out to Moon Se-yoon with a message, and from there, their connection grew from a friendship to a romantic relationship.[18][19] On December 8, 2012, their daughter was born in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do.[20] A couple years later, their second child, a son, was born on October 14, 2014 in Seoul.[21]
