Etymology

From the German surname; after family names became required, Lise Meitner's great-great-grandfather took the surname "Meietheiner" (Meiethein (a village now known as Majetín) +‎ -er) in the late 18th century. It is an indication that the family had lived in it a long time. The surname eventually shortened to "Meitheiner", "Meithner", "Meitner".^[1]
