Fin whale calls can penetrate into Earth’s crust, offering scientists a new way to study the properties of the ocean floor.

Blue whales are the biggest animals ever known to have lived on Earth. These humongous marine mammals rule the oceans at up to 100 feet (30.5 meters) long and upwards of 400,000 pounds (200 tons).
