We have used these exact materials time & time again, for multiple projects, to achieve the White Oak look I love! My go-to stain combo that works every time- One thing I do before even getting started on staining: sand the wood I’m working on. Sanding is a key step you do not want to miss, as it helps remove the yellow layer that is in a lot of woods. I start with 120/150 grit and then move to 220 so it gets nice & smooth! Once sanded, I apply Minwax Pre-Stain & wipe away any excess. This helps so the stain goes on evenly. When we were building, my initial plan was to simply put a clear coat on our white oak to maintain the closest natural look as possible. I quickly learned that it doesn’t work that way and a clear topcoat alone makes the wood look yellow. Preserving the natural color of out white oak cabinetry was a priority for us. After testing close a dozen top coats, methods, and stains combinations, we achieved the perfect finish.
