The holidays can be a prime opportunity to clean out your closet - but have you considered the environmental impact of throwing away that sweater? Or the new one you’ve bought to replace it? 👕 The fashion industry contributes an estimated 4% to global greenhouse gas emissions 🏭 The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) approach makes producers responsible for a product at the end of its life. Our 🆕 working paper looks at how this approach could help mitigate the textile sector’s environmental impact. Some key findings: ➡️ Between 2010 and 2022, the reported export weight of used clothing by OECD - OCDE Member countries has increased by 59%. ➡️ Under current policies, plastic waste generated from synthetic textiles is projected to more than double by 2060. ➡️ EPR schemes can enable re-use and recycling by supporting separate waste collection, while transferring the costs from governments to producers.   ➡️ France is the first OECD Member country with a fully implemented national policy on clothing, but several more countries are beginning to design and implement new schemes. 🎄 The holidays are a time for celebration—but also a time of increased waste. Better waste-related practices during the festive season can help curb the environmental impact and support a more circular economy. Recent OECD - OCDE works sheds light on the factors influencing household waste generation, prevention and recycling behaviours—insights that are especially relevant as we aim to reduce holiday food waste and packaging. Here are a few highlights: ♻️Availability matters. The availability of recycling collection services is associated with 15% lower mixed waste generation. 📦Interest in sustainable packaging is growing. 3/4 of households are willing to pay a premium for more sustainably packaged products and 57% prefer reusable products. 💸Charging schemes are associated with increased recycling volumes and greater engagement in waste prevention behaviours. Climate change is reshaping Indonesia’s future. It is expected to increase Indonesia’s annual flood-induced damage in urban areas up to more than four-fold by 2030, and by 2050, sea level rise could cause $109B in annual damages. Climate-resilient infrastructure is therefore crucial to safeguard Indonesia’s development goals. 🏢 As part of the Sustainable Infrastructure Programme in Asia, this newly published OECD - OCDE policy paper provides insights into Indonesia’s efforts to adapt its infrastructure to changing climatic conditions.
