The Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) is a unique initiative that aims to promote the better use and production of statistics throughout the developing world. Since its establishment in 1999, PARIS21 has successfully developed a worldwide network of statisticians, policy makers, analysts, and development practitioners committed to evidence-based decision making. With the main objective to achieve national and international development goals and reduce poverty in low and middle income countries, the Partnership facilitates statistical capacity development, advocates for the integration of reliable data in decision making, and co-ordinates donor support to statistics. 🌐 PRESS 2024 - Funding for statistics in small island developing states (SIDS) 🏝️ Small Island developing states (SIDS), especially vulnerable to climate change, require robust data for effective national adaptation strategies. However, funding for statistics in SIDS has decreased significantly. 🇭🇹 Haiti has received the most funding amongst SIDS countries, receiving USD 95 million over the years. However, in 2022, Haiti received the second highest total disbursement at USD 5.7 million in funding. 🇯🇲Jamaica became the top recipient of SIDS data funding in 2022, receiving USD 7.6 million. Together, Haiti and Jamaica received over half of all the funding disbursed to SIDS for data and statistics. 🔍 In 2022, the funding for SIDS dropped to USD 21 million, down from its peak of USD 42 million in 2018. 🔗 Explore the full PRESS report here: https://bit.ly/3VbgNm6

How can we tackle the increasing divide between facts versus feelings ? An important part of the answer lies in bringing data and statistics closer to the people - the localisation of statistics - in order to allow local decision makers to use data that provides more information than a national average. At today’s SIAP’s Management Meeting Dr. Mapa the DG of Statistics in the Philippines presented a very interesting approach to this effect: the establishment of a community based monitoring system where the central NSO provides some basic data infrastructure and guidance while local entities can complement this with their local needs and experiences. This seems a very promising approach which deserves more attention to move the cursor from data production to data use! https://psa.gov.ph/cbms Question: do we have more examples like the Philippines once?

🌐 PRESS 2024 - The Gates Foundation and the future of gender data funding 🌍 A major shift in gender data funding occurred in2022, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation becoming the largest donor, while bilateral funding continued to fall. 🇳🇵In 2022, Nepal was the top recipient, benefiting from a loan from The World Bank for a project that advances gender equality through better civil registration and vital statistics. 📊 Despite this, gender data funding lags behind other sectors. Health data funding grew by USD 30 million, but only one-quarter of the initiatives funded are considered as gender data. 🔗 Explore the figures for more insights: https://bit.ly/3VbgNm6 #data4development #developmentdata #globaldevelopment #sdgs #developmentstatistics
