GQ made its first reference to ruffled front formal shirts in 1957. By 1961, shirts appeared with small colored edging. By 1965, the ruffles had grown significantly larger and had been added to cuffs. By the 1970s, shirts exploded with gaudy color. The trend waned in the latter half of the 1970s.
