India’s in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) market is booming and companies operating in this space are on expansion mode, Naman Suri reports for Livemint. CK Birla group, which runs Birla Fertility & IVF, is planning to invest ₹500 crore to expand the number of fertility centres from 37 to 100 over the next four to five years. Indira IVF Group, which currently has around 130 centres, is planning to ramp up its presence in Tier 2 and 3 cities. While the demand for IVF services in urban areas is shaped by increasing infertility rates due to lifestyle changes, rural regions face limited access to fertility specialists, says Shobhit Agarwal, CEO at Nova IVF Fertility. The company plans to add 32 centres to its network by the end of this year. Factors such as affordability and lack of awareness about these services remain a challenge, experts say. Quick commerce companies in India are locked in a fierce battle with each other, Financial Express reports. As a result, firms are aiming to boost their average order value (AOV) and gross order value (GOV). While Zepto launched Zepto Cafe on a pilot mode in Mumbai last year and now in Bengaluru, Swiggy opened Instacafe in Bengaluru. This facilitates consumers to add both grocery and food items in the same order so that they can get it delivered at the same time. This in turn, increases the total transaction value, the report says. A rising GOV indicates more sales, efficacy of marketing strategies, and the ability of companies to meet customer demand, another report by Financial Express says. To meet demand, quick commerce companies are aggressively expanding their dark store-counts as well. Over the last few weeks, Zepto and Blinkit have launched dark stores in smaller cities such as Haridwar, Bathinda, and Vijaywada, says a report by The Economic Times. Contractual hiring is on the rise in India's information technology space, reports Prachi Verma for The Economic Times. This report comes after a year of scaled-back hiring and layoffs in the sector. An uptick in contractual hiring often signals an improvement in demand activity for IT service providers — a trend often followed by hiring for permanent roles, adds the report. The current contractual hiring rate has spiked by 40-50% over the same time in 2023, says Neeti Sharma, CEO at TeamLease Digital. She adds that the increase indicates an urgent need to expand the workforce after a period of reductions. In the January-March quarter, Michael Page saw a 22% year-on-year jump in overall contracting, which includes IT services firms, adds the report. Skills in high demand in the technology staffing space? Data analytics, AI/ML, and Google Cloud, said Pranshu Upadhyay, Regional Director at the firm. According to industry experts, firms increase contract hiring depending on factors like their strategies to prepare for future demand, order book positions, and specific client demands. Smaller cities are leading the way when it comes to video commerce, The Economic Times reports, citing data from Flipkart. Consumers in Tier 2 and 3 cities accounted for 65% of all video commerce engagement between May 2023 and June this year. The most in-demand categories were beauty, fashion, personal care, and home furnishings, the data shows. As a shopping format, video is gaining traction, especially among women in Tier 2 and 3 regions, and Gen Z and millennial customers, the report says. In fact, D2C brands, sellers, and farmers are increasingly relying more on video offerings. Reason? Reliability, interactivity, trust, and ease of access. Overall, Indians spent more than two million hours on Flipkart’s video commerce segment, the data shows further. While quick commerce is rapidly gaining popularity across India, firms are facing challenges in category expansion beyond groceries, food, and home essential, S Shanthi reports for Financial Express. Reason? Issues with supply chain and inventory management, the report says. Vipul Parekh, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of BigBasket, believes that expansion may take time. And therefore, he emphasises on the importance of having enough dark stores. On the other hand, Ankur Mittal, co-founder of Inflection Point Ventures, says that foraying into new categories would mean revamping supply chain capabilities entirely. It may also bring in other complexities such as overstocking or stockouts, the report says further. At present, the share of non-grocery and non-fresh items account for about 5-6% of overall revenue for quick commerce firms, which could increase to 20-25%, say analysts. More venture investors are eyeing new-age ethnic wear brands, Pranav Mukul reports for The Economic Times reports. While Noida-based Libas raised nearly ₹150 crore from ICICI Venture last month, Bengaluru-based Koskii raised ₹61 crore from Baring Private Equity last year. In fact, in order to target Gen Z consumers, Libas has repositioned itself from an “ethnic wear brand” to “Indian wear brand," says Sidhant Keshwani, founder and CEO of the company. Reason? These brands are seeing a growth in their business as more Gen Z employees are preferring to wear ethnic clothes at work, the report says.Post-pandemic consumers are choosing comfort over fashion, Keshwani says. Moreover, nearly 40-50% of the workforce at India Inc are preferring to wear ethnic over western, he adds. The organised Indian ethnic wear market is valued between ₹30,000 and ₹35,000 crore, and is currently growing at 20-25%, say industry executives. NEWS UPDATE: Smartphone Sales and FMCG Strategies in India Smartphone sales in India slowed in the June quarter, reports The Economic Times, citing Counterpoint Research. Major brands like Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus saw reduced shipments due to inventory pileups and a dip in demand. Contributing factors included heatwaves and general elections. However, Vivo and Xiaomi performed well with leaner inventories. Despite a sluggish overall market, premium smartphones remain in demand, driven by discounts and the upcoming festive season. Premium segment sales grew 64% over the past year, with Apple leading the high-end market, capturing a significant share of the $920+ price range. Apple's sales surged 33% to a record $8 billion in India, with one-third of smartphones financed through loans, boosting sales of expensive models. Apple and Samsung dominate over 90% of the premium market, with AI features becoming a key trend. In the FMCG sector, global giants are expanding in India, capitalizing on strong growth. Unilever's volume growth accelerated by 3.8%, and Coca-Cola’s lightweight bottles saw over 400 million transactions in the first half of the year. Companies like Reckitt Benckiser, Mondelez, PepsiCo, Domino's, Levi's, and AO Smith also reported significant growth. Premium categories have surged by 35% by volume and 53% by value in the past two years, according to Kantar. To tap into rural markets, FMCG leaders such as ITC Limited, Hindustan Unilever, and Nestlé are enhancing their strategies. These include introducing low-unit packs, expanding distribution networks, and implementing localized marketing initiatives. The focus on rural areas, which account for 35% of FMCG sales, aims to boost accessibility and drive brand loyalty through targeted engagement and tailored pricing strategies.

Around 4,500 C-suite executives switched jobs in the last one year in the IT services sector in India, reports shivani shinde for Business Standard, citing a report by Xpheno. The movement represents 4.5% of the overall leadership roles in the sector and includes people in positions ranging from directors to assistant VPs and heads of businesses, says the report. Kamal Karanth, co-founder of Xpheno, says that the current churn is happening primarily due to two developments. First, two new CEO appointments by two large IT services firms and the restructuring of leadership teams, he adds. In the last 12 months, Infosys saw nine senior exits, while Cognizant hired 20 senior leaders. Meanwhile, executives from top firms have been hired by Tech Mahindra, says the report. Pareekh Jain, CEO of EIIRTrend, says that many executives are shifting to firms that may be smaller but are growing much faster, with the pandemic's effect now fading. Over 92% of the senior leaders who switched have moved within IT services, while the rest shifted to either GCCs or product companies, adds the report. There are reports that around 60,000 MT has been cancelled due to excess selling.  In Muzaffarnagar, M-grade sugar ranged between Rs 3,870 and Rs 3,890 per quintal, while S-grade sugar ranged between Rs 3,510 and Rs 3,550. The retail sector in India is going through rapid transformation with the rise of premium malls, reports Diksha Tripathy for The Economic Times. More consumers are looking to buy high-end products in offline stores. This indicates the need for better shopping malls which offer a superior shopping experience, the report says. Nearly 18 million sq. ft. of new retail space would be launched between 2024 and 2027 across major Indian cities, says a report by Cushman & Wakefield. Additionally factory outlet malls, which offers products at discounted rates, are also in the works, the report further says. Preety Kumari, Head of Marketing at E-city Ventures, says, “Shoppers are no longer just looking for products — they’re seeking immersive experiences. Malls are responding by offering a blend of retail, entertainment, dining, and community events that can’t be replicated online.” Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are participating in the launch of new retail spaces too. Better infrastructure and a rise in leisure travel would become big drivers of growth for highway retail. And companies are taking note. While 70% of the products launched by Hindustan Unilever in the last two years belonged to the premium segment, ITC’s premium products contribute nearly 38% of its sales, the report says. Quick commerce players in India are now using data to select a location to launch their dark stores, Financial Express reports. The data points include shopping patterns, traffic in the area, road condition, demographics, and internet penetration, the report says. As the quick commerce market has seen significant growth in the last couple of years, opportunities in the sector are huge, the report says. In fact, this year the market is set to generate a revenue of $3,349 million. As a result, quick commerce players are looking to launch more dark stores to cater to consumer demand. Shashank Randev, Founder, VC and Co-founder of 100X.VC, says that companies are employing data-driven models to offer enhanced warehousing services and delivery logistics. Additionally, to ensure smooth delivery, these players also have strategically located primary and secondary stores to take orders during peak traffic hours, the report says further. Bengaluru-based space startup Pixxel has secured $24 million, The Economic Times reports. The funding round was led by investors such as M&G Catalyst and Glade Brook Capital Partners, the report says. With this, the startup has so far raised $60 million with investors such as Google, Radical Ventures, Lightspeed and others also participating. “The new infusion of capital will help us launch more satellites quicker," says Awais Ahmed, the founder of the company. Additionally, it will also be used to boost its satellite manufacturing capacity, scale operations for future missions, and increase its ability to provide satellite manufacturing services, the report further says. Amazon India is reportedly interested in Swiggy's Q-com delivery service Instamart. This, at least, is what the »India Times« (22 July) reports, citing three people familiar with the matter. 'Amazon has swooped in with interest to either pick up a stake in the ongoing pre-IPO placement or make a buyout proposal for Instamart... but there are multiple roadblocks at the moment,' said one of the sources. However, an official offer has not yet been made. Market observers are sceptical about the move - if it has even been made. After all, why would Swiggy sell only the Q-com subsidiary before the planned IPO (CEP News 18/24), which is expected to raise more than 1.25bn US dollars? Amazon, on the other hand, is unlikely to be interested in the grocery delivery business. As Swiggy was valued at 12.7bn US dollars in April, buying the entire company would be an expensive pleasure. In addition, the company as a whole, including Instamart, is still operating at a loss; in the current financial year alone, a loss of 200m US dollars arose in the nine months to December 2023 on revenues of 1.02bn US dollars. As previously reported (CEP News 27/24), Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has also been flirting with an investment in Swiggy. Between September and November of last year, talks were held between the two companies concerning a possible investment by Walmart subsidiary Flipkart in Swiggy. However, these negotiations were ultimately terminated due to the failure to agree on the company's valuation.
