In a letter to the Financial Times our CEO Daniel Carpenter responds to the latest updates from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) suggesting October 2027 as the optimal transition date for T+1 in Europe. In his letter, Daniel emphasises the importance of avoiding the short-term tactical solutions seen with previous settlement rule changes such as CSDR penalties. Instead, he advocates for the implementation of AI-enhanced tools that offer predictive capabilities to identify and resolve at-risk-of-failing trades. With a proposed timeline in place, firms should leverage these advanced technologies to better manage operational activities for failed trades and, crucially, to reduce the total volume of fails and the associated costs. Such proactive measures will ensure greater efficiency and sustainability in trade settlement operations as market participants prepare for the shorter settlement cycle in Europe and continue to adapt to the changes in North America. Earlier this week, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) released its Final Report stating that the EU transition to a T+1 settlement cycle should take place in October 2027, pushing for the same timing as the UK. This change aims to enhance efficiencies, reduce risks, and align with global standards. However, the transition is more complex in Europe due to CSDR and existing operational challenges. With the timeline now set, market participants in Europe should use the next two years to proactively implement solutions that enable them to better handle operational activity for failed trades and reduce the total volume of fails altogether. We had some great discussions on a myriad of topics, ranging from policymakers' priorities to secure Europe’s position in the global capital markets, delving into the current state of clearing, reviewing CSDR, assessing the impact of T+1, exploring preparation strategies for shorter settlement cycles in Europe and the upcoming DORA regulation. The team was kept busy at our booth with numerous conversations on the power of data, automation, and industry collaboration and the ways in which we can help address many of the key post-trade challenges faced by the industry.
