#Todays The Economic Times. I am quoted here, on #womenscareers in #IT. Good work Xpheno on the hard-hitting research and Rica Bhattacharyya on the powerful writing. An article that undeniably provokes thought. The story speaks of women leaving big IT companies. But what's really happening? A few facts for the discerning reader and those interested in #WomensWorkforceParticipation: 1. India's overall women's labor force participation has gone up by almost 9 percentage points last year - from 27% to 36%. 2. This includes every single earning woman whose income is identifiable - so, that means women in formal and informal sectors, women in corporates, entrepreneurs, gig-workers, agricultural workers, contract laborers, et al. 3. Let's do a further slice-dice of urban v/s rural - it's a 30-70 split. Hence, around 30% of the 36% of working women are from urban India - meaning, white and blue collar workforce. 4. If we attempt to derive a cautious guesstimate of the women in #InfoTech jobs, that would be about 50% of this 30%, since IT and it's allied industries in the Tech & Tech-enabled space contribute to the majority of women-held jobs. (BFSI, Services, Telecom rank next, with Manufacturing making a strong effort over the last 2-3 years) 5. So, that's a huge cohort independently - for a country of India's size (I am not getting into hard, individual numbers) So, that brings us to the question - these women in senior roles leaving the large IT companies - #WhereAreTheyGoing?? Question 1 - Are they dropping off? Question 2 - Are they going to other organizations taking up larger assignments? If the answer to Q1 is a yes, I would worry. The last thing we want is if women Tech leaders dropped off the workforce. But if it's a yes to Q2 - that they are dropping off to assume leadership positions in medium sized companies, or even pursuing entrepreneurial ventures, I would say that's wonderful! It's certainly a moment to soul-search. We have to see what large corporates like our #BestCompanies for Women in India are doing to hold on to talent and yes, there are a bunch of initiatives that can be done. But I wouldn't be all unhappy if our large corporates are the training, mentoring, growing ground for women leaders who then go on to fresh arenas to create more women leaders of their own! As the honourable Finance Minister presents the #unionbudget 2 days from now, stakeholders across the #educationsector would be keenly watching for the much needed impetus to elevate the sector to meet the needs of tomorrow. Enabling greater flow of private capital, including foreign funds, public-private partnership based model for creating education cities where #institutions (both Indian and foreign) can merely plug-n-play and operate their campuses (facilitates new institutions to set up without huge capex needs and in a time efficient manner) are some initiatives that the #government may consider. The Mantra to Personal Mastery Recently at an IIM Udaipur conducted Management Development Program for Indus Towers managers, I anchored four sessions. We started with the overarching perspective of Leadership and personal mastery before drilling down to specifics of Power & influence in teams, Managing high performance teams and the Feedback & Delegation aspects in Team Dynamics. We ensured a surfeit of activities, Role Plays and Case Studies to deepen the learning through practice and Ideation. In one of the sessions, we were discussion the aspects of ‘Honouring one’s word’ and ‘Being Authentic’ as performance accelerators of a team. Several participants mentioned their reservations about this, as under: “If we become authentic and honour our word and others in the team do not do it, we would be taken advantage of and would be forced to do the work of others” “All this is good theory but just does not work in real life. The fact is the Management has perceptions of who are good versus who are bad and irrespective of whether we honour our word or not, the favoured ones would get rewarded in terms of promotions and bonus” In life, we are conditioned to judge others on moral and ethical yardsticks but remain quick to rationalize our own failings against the same yardsticks. We look around to try and determine who all are ‘honouring their word’ and tell ourselves that we would wait for others to honour and keep their word before we keep our own. As Chris Argyris had said about self-deception, ‘Put simply, people consistently act inconsistently, unaware of the contradiction between the way they think they are acting and the way they really act.’  To gain the ability to honour our own word. We should be prepared to deeply deliberate and answer the question, ‘Where is my word when it comes time for me to keep my own word?’  In the ultimate analysis, there is a simple equation of workability which is YOU are equal to YOUR WORD. As I explained to the participants, team performance has very little to do with peering over shoulders to ascertain who is doing what. It has almost everything to do with how we can create trust of others in us. And creating trust has everything to do about Integrity viz. honouring our word and being authentic about how we show up for others. While some may try and take advantage of your trust in the short term, the aura of trust leads to team members gravitating towards you, working with you as you shift into being a natural leader. As businesses in India align with global sustainability standards, Scope 3 emissions have become a focal point in ESG reporting. While Scope 1 and 2 emissions (direct and indirect) are well understood, Scope 3 emissions—which include all other indirect emissions along the value chain—present a more complex challenge. These emissions often account for the largest part of a company's carbon footprint, making them critical for achieving climate goals. In FY23, the transition from voluntary to mandatory ESG reporting under SEBI’s BRSR framework saw nearly half of the top 100 listed Indian companies disclosing Scope 3 data. This is a remarkable step forward, as it shows a growing commitment to transparency, with sectors like IT, energy, and manufacturing leading the way. As companies integrate Scope 3 emissions into their sustainability strategies, they are not only addressing regulatory demands but also building resilience and trust with stakeholders. The social sector in India has conducted innumerable pilots and experiments, many of which have proven to be highly effective or hold immense promise. If scaled, they could solve many of India’s problems, but this isn’t happening quickly enough. What's holding them back? While there could be shortcomings with solution or pilot design itself (e.g., geographic unit of experimentation isn’t representative of scaled reality, operational complexity and cost associated with the solution make it unviable ‘at scale’), in my experience, the biggest constraints to scaling are: - Lack of political and bureaucratic will, a desire to maintain status quo and not take bold long-term decisions - Limited awareness, and entrenched beliefs, biases, and behaviours among end-constituents - Challenges in comparability between pilots, making it tough for decision makers to allocate scarce resources to one or the other What do you think is holding back gold-standard solutions from reaching population scale? #socialimpact #foodforthought
