Blackened teeth

This is a maiko (apprentice geisha) blackening her teeth for her debut as a geiko (geisha). During the heian era, this practice was done for cosmetic and health reasons. The teeth were more protected from decay, and it was more beautiful than having yellowing teeth with white face powder. Geisha continue the practice for special ceremonies if they wish.
