Researchers have found the wreckage of the U.S. warship Indianapolis, which was sunk by a Japanese torpedo in the final days of World War II, more than 18,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the Navy said Saturday.

The celebrated USS Indianapolis, which sunk 73 years ago on Monday, was nearly blown in half by two Japanese torpedoes on July 30, 1945, a tragedy that also stands as one of World War II's most harrowing survival stories.
