Maize, also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits. Answer (1 of 3): You need to get out in a corn field sometime! Corn routinely has either one or two ears per corn stalk. In general, fast maturing varieties are harvested in July and only have 1 ear, but corn varieties grown to harvest in August or September has 2 ears per stalk:
