Kasmírföldön hozzávetőleg 400 éve készülnek szőnyegek, valószínűleg a terület első muszlim uralkodójának, Mir sahnak (1349-től) és a moguloknak (1526-1751) a hatására. A szőnyegkészítő iparosság azonban csupán a késői tizenkilencedik század szülötte. A legfinomabb selyemszőnyeget Indiában a kasmírföldi Srinagarban szövik. A legtöbb minta Perzsiából ered.
