The king (raja) of the dance (nata) is a symbol of the eternal movement of the universe, the cosmic dance of the interdependence of all phenomena. Shiva Nataraj is surrounded by a crown of flame which protects against interference. Fire also symbolizes the destruction of the old, through which the new can arise.
