LSE student 1916-1926, Professor of Social Work, Columbia University

'Dr Eveline Burns was born in London in 1900. A student at LSE, after graduation she switched from Gography in the BSc Econ (1st Class Hons 1920) to Economics PhD, 1926) and was an assistant lecturer. As Eve Richardson she married fellow student Arthur Robert Burns and went to the USA. Her long association with Columbia University began in 1928 with appointment as the first woman member of the Graduate Department of Economics. Actively involved in development of the social security system from 1934, in 1942-3 she was Chief of the Economic Security and Health Section of the National Resources Planning Board and in 1946 became Professor of Social Work at Columbia University, developing the newly authorised doctorate in Social Welfare.'
