About us

United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is the UN organization dedicated to fostering peace and development through volunteerism across the globe. In East and Southern Africa, UNV plays a critical role in addressing regional development challenges by leveraging the transformative power of volunteerism. Volunteerism is a potent tool for engaging people in the quest to overcome development obstacles, significantly altering the speed and quality of development initiatives. It not only benefits society as a whole but also enriches the individual volunteer by building trust, solidarity, and reciprocity among community members, and by creating meaningful opportunities for active participation. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for the recognition of volunteers, collaborating with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programs, and mobilizing a growing and diverse cadre of volunteers, including experienced UN Volunteers. UNV embraces the universality and inclusivity of volunteerism, celebrating its diversity and the core values that underpin it: free will, commitment, engagement, and solidarity. Operating from Bonn, Germany, UNV is active in around 130 countries each year. With Field Units in 60 countries, including several in East and Southern Africa, UNV's presence is bolstered through the offices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to which it reports. • Joining the dots for a more inclusive world #Braille isn’t just a script. It’s a gateway to inclusion for millions of visually impaired people worldwide. As we get into a new year, we reflect on the transformative power of this ingenious system and its alignment with the United Nations’ commitment to leaving no one behind. Here are 3 interesting things that you should know about braille: 🟠 A Universal Tool: Braille enables reading and writing across numerous languages, bridging gaps in communication. 🟠 A Revolutionary Invention: Created in 1824, Braille has been a game-changer for accessibility, empowering individuals to learn, connect, and thrive. 🟠  Everyday Inclusivity: From ATMs to elevators, Braille ensures accessibility in public spaces, fostering a culture of inclusion and dignity for all. At United Nations Volunteers, inclusion is at the heart of what we do. Through our volunteers’ work with UN partners, we champion efforts to ensure persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate, contribute, and lead in their communities.

Sincere condolences from United Nations Volunteers to WFP colleagues and especially to families of a field officer, a programme associate, and a security guard in Sudan who were carrying out life-saving duties and died as result of aerial bombardment on Thursday night

WFP is heartbroken by the tragic deaths of three of our colleagues in #Sudan, who were carrying out lifesaving duties on the frontlines of one of the world's largest hunger crises. Any loss of life in humanitarian service is unconscionable. Humanitarians are not, and must never be, a target. Yet a record number have lost their lives in 2024. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues, their families, and the entire WFP team at this time of grief. Full statement: https://ow.ly/G53b50UuZmO #NotATarget
