  • Did you now that when sea turtles 🐢 🐢 are ready to lay eggs, they return to the beaches where they themselves hatched years before? The 🐢 🐢 crawl up the beach searching for a nesting spot. But not every sea turtle crawl leads to a nest. Scroll left to learn why false 🐢 crawls happen and how disturbances or unsuitable conditions affect nesting. The final slide shows a successful 🐢 crawl to a nesting site. Climate change impacts nesting by altering sand temperatures, which affects the sex of hatchlings. At WWF, thanks to support from the Beckett Foundation project, we are working to halt the decline of sea turtles. 🌊💚 #TogetherforTurtles

  • Ending #2024 on a high in the Kaptagat ecosystem! 10 households from villages near Kaptagat Forest have received improved high-yield dairy cows through the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (Kaptagat-ICP) and Livelihoods Improvement Initiative. Biogas adoption has also been expanded, reducing reliance on firewood from the forest, promoting the sustainable initiative dubbed 'Pesa Mfukon, Maji na KawiSafi Nyumbani'. During the handover ceremony, Mohamed Awer - our CEO at WWF-Kenya, together with Dr Chris Kiptoo - PS National Treasury and Patron , Kaptagat - ICP, H.E Wisley Rotich - Governor, Elgeyo Marakwet, Hon. William Kisang - Senator, Hon. Gideon Kimaiyo- Keiyo South MP, MCAs, and local leaders lauded the forest conservation and livelihood improvement milestones by Community Forest Association members. With 28,000 households set to benefit from clean water, renewable energy, and improved livestock breeds, we are empowering communities to achieve higher milk yields earning more from dairy farming, biogas use, and bio-slurry manure for farming—all while conserving Kaptagat Forest and earning from the growing economy. • #PhotosoftheDay: Double Olympic and World Marathon champion, Dr Eliud kipchoge, participates in a tree-planting drive during the 7th edition of the Annual Kaptagat Tree Planting Drive. Kipchoge was participating in a sub-two-minute challenge symbolic of the race against time to halt the impacts of climate change by planting and growing 15 Billion trees. The tree-planting challenge was inspired by Kipchoge's 1:59 race in which he ran a full marathon in Vienna in under two hours. Guess who were his competitors in the Kaptagat challenge? None other than President William Ruto, several members of his Cabinet and fellow Olympic and 4X World Champion Vivian Cheruiyot.

  • #FlashbackFriday "Every time I plant a tree seedling it reminds me that it is not about me. It is about us. It is about humanity. It reminds me of the fragility of life. It symbolizes the delicate nature of life, a journey that demands patience, nurturing, and resilience. Just like the growth of a tree, the restoration of the Kaptagat Forest is a story of perseverance. It took seven years to reach this point, and it will take many more to witness our dream come true - the comeback of wildlife, rivers flowing again and communities reaping big from the forest," says Dr Chris Kiptoo, the patron of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme. Through this model, 1,300,000 trees have been planted in 8 editions. https://lnkd.in/dAbbyYVf
