[Press Release] Interview with Tech Seoul Q. Please introduce your company   Cliwant, a South Korea-based startup, specializes in providing AI-driven software for analyzing requests for proposals (RFPs). Q. What projects did you work on in 2024? Cliwant launched its software in January 2024 and has since acquired over 50 clients. In March 2024, Cliwant was selected as an official partner startup by OpenAI during the K-Startup & OpenAI Matching Day event in the US, hosted by Korea's Ministry of SMEs and Startups. In August, Cliwant completed its Pre-A funding round and plans to expand into Singapore and the United States in Q3 of 2024. Q. What's the story behind your company? Junho Cho, the CEO of Cliwant, is a 14-year veteran global bidding expert with experience in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Korea. Junho, along with co-founders Kyle Jung and Seungdo Keum, met during the Antler program in Korea and established the company last September after securing seed funding from BonAngeles Venture Partners, a leading venture capital firm in Korea. Q. How do you set project goals? Our primary goal has always been revenue. It took us three months to develop our first MVP, and since then, we have consistently generated revenue and experienced continuous growth. All our business and technology actions are focused on generating revenue, which we achieve by acquiring new customers and retaining existing ones. We quickly iterate based on customer feedback and execution. Q. What does success mean for you and your company? For us, success is defined by revenue and contracts. Even if we develop great technology or achieve significant milestones, they hold no meaning if they don't result in sales. We strive to keep this perspective at the forefront. Q. Where do you see your company in three years? Global expansion is a major pillar of our plan. We envision ourselves successfully established in strategic markets such as the U.S. and Singapore, followed by further expansion into other regions. In terms of service, we currently provide bid matching and RFP analysis. We plan to expand into proposal creation and document automation to assist with daily tasks. Q. In one word, describe yourself. Although it may sound ambitious, my goal has always been "world domination". I believe in achieving this through global business. I published a Korean product review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition for Business 5G, which will be available in the Korean market from the first week of November 2024, on my blog yesterday. This product is my personal product, which I ordered last month and received three weeks ago through Surface ADR in Korea. I really liked the powerful computing and AI performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, and the battery performance is so good that I can use it as my main device when I go on a business trip or workcation. ARM64 native applications are increasing, and there are more and more cases where applications are improved to work well in the ARM64 environment even though they are x64 apps, so I think the range of applications will expand over time. I tested it myself by opening 5G/LTE lines of Korean mobile carriers, and in the case of SKT, the speed has improved, and in the case of KT, APN presets have been provided through Windows Update recently, making setup more convenient. China's biggest chip maker, SMIC, achieved a significant milestone by climbing to the third position globally in contract chip manufacturing according to a report by TrendForce. This comes despite US sanctions aimed at limiting China's ability to produce advanced chips. The ranking is led by TSMC, a Taiwanese company, which holds a dominant market share of over 60%. SMIC's success is attributed to a rise in local Chinese demand for chips used in smartphones and other consumer electronics. This growth helped SMIC surpass competitors like GlobalFoundries and UMC. While SMIC's revenue grew steadily, it fell short of profit expectations due to the impact of sanctions on advanced chip production. However, the company's revenue is expected to remain strong due to the upcoming Chinese shopping season which will likely boost demand for consumer electronics. Looking ahead, TrendForce predicts a positive outlook for SMIC with the potential to retain its third-place position. The report also highlights that TSMC remains the industry leader with a significant market share advantage. [Press Release] "VC to Start 'Buyout' Investment...Will venture and start-up M&A be activated?" https://lnkd.in/gvAe4Zjm The venture capital (VC) industry is expanding into “buyout” investments, which involve taking control of a venture or startup and selling it at an increased valuation. To this end, they are establishing private equity (PE) divisions within their organizations and actively recruiting buyout experts. This is due to the fact that the valuation of venture and startup companies has been significantly reduced due to the investment cold snap, creating a favorable market for buyout investments. According to the VC industry on the 19th, Murex Partners, a mid-sized VC with 400 billion won in assets under management (AUM), has recently hired PE investment specialists. Murex Partners, which switched to a self-represented division system earlier this year, has Lee Bum-seok in charge of the PE division and Kang Dong-min in charge of the VC division.  The investment targets are traditional SI (system integration) companies that are willing to innovate digitally. Traditional SI companies are also willing to enter new businesses such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud, but they have been limited in recruiting technology and manpower. “Our goal is to increase enterprise value through digital transformation of existing businesses rather than financial engineering approaches such as acquisition, restructuring, and reorganization,” said Lee Bum-seok, CEO of Murex Partners. ”We are also considering M&A with B2B cloud startups that can create synergies.” While there have always been VCs with PE businesses, most have focused on growth capital, mezzanine, and secondary investments in pre-IPO and pre-listing companies. “Buyout” investments, where management is acquired, have been rare. The number of VCs entering the buyout market is likely to increase. This is because companies that were previously invested at high valuations are delaying their listings and finding it difficult to recover their investments. Venture and startup companies that have difficulty raising funds are in high demand to sell, and the number of companies willing to acquire them is also increasing. Deregulation of venture funds is also cited as a reason to enter the buyout market. In December last year, the government amended the Venture Investment Promotion Act to allow venture funds to establish special purpose companies (SPCs) that can borrow from financial institutions. Until now, venture funds were not allowed to make leveraged investments using loans, unlike PEFs. The obligation to invest 40 percent of assets in new shares was also abolished. “I think VCs with strong networks can be competitive in venture and startup M&As, while traditional PEFs can handle large-scale M&A deals,” said a VC industry insider.
