The city of Belur was the capital of the Hoysala kingdom until it was annexed by the Mughal ruler Allauddin Khilji. The Mughals looted and plunders the capital city after which Halebidu was established as the new capital. The temples and monuments of Belur are the best examples of Hoysala architecture and the highlight is the nature of the carvings; so intricate that they look like carvings made on sandalwood rather than stone.

A Mysterious Temple in India Was Carved Out of One Single Rock, and It’s a Sight to Behold

Ancient India found a way to keep us tuned in to new discoveries. India itself is famous for its diverse culture, colorful history, and mysterious structures. Let’s take a look at Kailasa temple, the oldest single rock carving in the world. Being one of the most visited places by both locals and foreign tourists, it is also the focus of archaeologists, since they still cannot find the answer to how they could build this masterpiece by using ancient traditional methods.

The temple has a sprawling lawn on its northern side. There are two huge gateways that give access to the temple compound. The interior of the temple has ornately sculpted columns. An empty pedestal with three holes signifies that the temple once had idols of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. There is a smaller shrine inside the temple complex with similar epic wall carvings.
