Drones spotted over New Jersey

The flying of drones for recreational and commercial use is legal in New Jersey, but it is subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. In New York City, a permit is required to take off or land an unmanned aircraft. Operators must be FAA certified.

How large are the New Jersey drones? The drones, described as 6 feet in diameter, fly only at night, from dusk to 11 p.m., according to New Jersey lawmakers, USA TODAY reported. Analysis of drone images indicate they are manned aircraft flying legally in the area, FBI and DHS officials said.

Drones have lights usually in a tight square pattern, while planes will have lights on the nose and tail and both wings. Drones also have a unique sound, much like the buzzing of a lawn mower, which can help distinguish between the two.

The drones were first spotted in New Jersey on Nov. 18. They appear to show up in the late hours of the night, though it is not clear if they are present every single night.
