🇸🇱 Building Sierra Leone's food security, one farmer at a time. 🌾💪 Rice is a staple in Sierra Leone, but its high cost makes it inaccessible for many. The Resilient Food and Nutrition Security (RFANS) programme from Solidaridad West Africa is helping rural farmers, especially women, to increase local production. With technical assistance, tools & seeds, farmers like Jeneba Hakawa are able to revive their passion for farming and boost harvests. 🌍 🌏 In India, approximately 224.3 million people are undernourished; the number across Africa stands at 278 million. The need for food security & nutritious options is clear. Promoting agricultural biodiversity, diversified & regenerative farming practices can contribute to improved access to nutritious foods for all segments of society. That's the conclusion of the policy paper, 'Agrobiodiversity as an Approach towards Food and Nutrition Security for Rural Communities in Africa and India' from Solidaridad Asia & the Observer Research Foundation. The paper was produced under Think20 (T20), an official engagement group of the G20 that brings together research institutes and think tanks to explore policy issues that are presented to G20 leaders. The paper was released in November at a conference in New Delhi, India. 🌎 #COP29 was dubbed the 'Climate Finance COP', but did the results meet the aspirations? Solidaridad staff compiled their perspectives on what was (or wasn't) achieved in Baku: 🟨 Climate finance commitment to developing countries tripled. Though the increase was significant, available finance will still fall far short of what's needed. 🟥 The focus on food and agriculture: For all of its importance, food and agriculture received comparatively less attention and remains underfunded. 🟨 Global goal on adaptation: Progress was made on evidence-based indicators, but issues remain on implementation. 🟨 Gender and social inclusion remain a work in progress. Even though the topic of gender didn't have a dedicated space, parties acknowledged the interplay between climate and gender. 🟥 Dismal results on transition ambitions: National interests and fossil fuel dependence sidelined progress on transition discussions. Now is the time to move forward with urgency. All eyes are on #COP30, which will take place in the Brazilian Amazon. This is the best chance to realign global efforts on climate action. The final Living Wage & Income Lab of 2024 hosted by our RECLAIM Sustainability! programme partner Fairfood is coming up! This year, agri-food stakeholders faced a whirlwind of regulatory changes. Just as the #EUDR gained traction, unexpected revisions surprised those who invested a lot of time and money to ensure compliance. Meanwhile, food companies around the world want to stay ahead and prepare for what the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD) may bring. 📊 Amid the uncertainty, for Fairfood one thing stands out: contextual data is key to building supply chain resilience. But going beyond compliance, can data integration also drive smarter, more efficient supply chains while accelerating sustainability goals? Join this event on 17 December to explore these questions and share learnings from those testing this out, including: ✔️ Learnings from innovative projects funded by the German Due Diligence Fund, from GIZ’s Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative (SASI) ✔️ Practical approaches to aligning pricing models with sustainability with True Price and Impact Institute ✔️ Data-driven strategies for tackling environmental and social challenges at the farm level, with representatives from Akvo 📍 Where: Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam 📅 When: 17 December, 2024 👉 Register here: https://lnkd.in/d7NiGfTH #RECLAIMsustainability
