After his detention from Samarkand, Sultan Zain ul Abideen came to Kashmir to develop the first paper industry of the valley. Kashmiri paper was famous and high in demand, so much so that the first Bir of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji was written on paper from Kashmir. This was the same era when the Persian Calligraphy had the highest acclaim all over the world. The craftsmen accompanying the Sultan deftly mingled Kashmiri Paper and Persian Naqashi and introduced to the Paper Mache craft.
